Very soon his exceptional energy and versatility were in evidence, as he founded the American Philosophical Quarterly, generated a constantly rising stack of preprints, pursued impor tant scholarly research in Arabic logic, taught a staggering diversity of histori cal and thematic courses, and obtained, in cooperation with Kurt Baier, a major grant for work in value theory. That is all part of the record. What may come as a surprise is that none of it was accomplished at the expense of his students. Papers were returned in a matter of days, often the next class meet ing. And so easily accessible was he for philosophical discussion that, since (inevitably) we shared many philosophical interests, I asked him to serve as my dissertation advisor. My work in connection with this project led to a couple of journal articles while his, characteristically, led to a book. Our dis cussions certainly helped me, and while they may also have had some small influence on him, in the end our views were quite distinct. This task could not have been accomplished without relating post-war developments to those of the inter war period. Consequently, the period studied covers the years 1918-1958. Yet another extension was necessary. Marxism-Leninism regards sociology as a part of philosophy. Moreover, Marxism-Leninism often resorts to sociology to support or justify some of its philosophical views. Finally, its criticism of 'bourgeois philosophy' is often concerned with social philosophy and socio logical theories which supposedly are implicit or explicit in 'bourgeois philoso phy'. For this reason it was desirable to consider in this study some theoretical and methodological problems of the social sciences. They are taken into ac count when they illuminate philosophical controversies or the evolution of Marxist-Leninist philosophy. Marxism-Leninism is not only a new line of development but also a new point of departure in Polish philosophy. It provides a striking contrast with the established philosophical tradition which originated roughly at the time when G. E. Moore and Bertrand Russell initiated the analytical trend in English philosophy. One tradition goes back to the Greek thinkers and includes practically every great name in the history of philosophy, since almost all philosophers took a stand on epistemological problems. To be sure, theory of knowledge is not to be identified with theory of science. Science is a relatively new phenomenon, dating from modern times. It is a source of knowledge, the main source (in our type of culture), but certainly not the only one. Also, epistemology deals with questions rather far removed from the practice of science. It has developed (under that name) into general metho dology of science, which roughly means: analysis of scientific theories and analysis of their validation. Firstly, that our conception of the syndrome is in a state of flux. Gone, for instance, in the past decade or two, is the requirement of a chronic, progressive, irreversible disorder for the diag nosis. I remember the surgeon who, when I was a student, returned a referral saying he would operate on the man when his dementia got better. Feeling superior, and encouraged by the consultant psychiatrist, we students laughed a good deal at this. Before we finished clerking on that Unit a visiting Professor of Psychiatry had demonstrated the reversibility of the symptoms of dementia in a patient with a rare metabolic disorder. Perhaps ignorance is sometimes an advance on received wisdom. The lesson is the concept of dementia must always reflect the state of knowledge and is therefore in a sense ad hoc. Secondly, what the criteria for, and also who the arbiters of, the diagnosis might be is not always clear. Although meteorology is not covered by a specific Community programme as such, various Community actions dealing with meteorology are now included in the EEC research programme on climatology (the 'EPOCH' programme - 1989-92) of mechanisms of extreme and sudden concerning particularly the study meteorological events, in order to predict catastrophies and consequently to reduce human and material losses. In the context of COST cooperation, which is supported by the Commission of the European Communities, the COST 73 project (1986-1991) associates 16 countries in Western Europe with the aim of setting up a weather radar network providing real-time measurements of rain, snow or hail precipitations. In this project, radar data are transmitted and combined if appropriate with satellite data - in one or more 'compositing centres' of the participating countries, in order to improve weather forecasting. According to our con temporary state of knowledge, the illness begins with a decreased outflow of aqueous humor. This leads, sometimes after a period of decreased aqueous humor production due to a feedback mechanism, to an increase in intra ocular pressure (lOP). An elevated lOP can eventually lead to optic nerve damage, which manifests itself morphologically as glaucomatous papillary excavation and functionally in the development of a visual field defect. The classic triad of elevated lOP, papillary excavation and visual field defect, on which the diagnosis of glaucoma was also based in earlier times, is then pre sent. To this can now only be added that tonography usually shows a de crease in aqueous humor outflow and that gonioscopy must reveal an open angle. On the basis of statistical findings, Goldmann has calculated that there may be an interval of as long as 18 years between the initial increase in lOP and the development of visual field defects. This point of view (which has been confirmed in practice) that the onset of the illness can be demon strated by measurement of the lOP has introduced a new element into the discussion around glaucoma, namely, the concept of ocular hypertension. Orbital and periorbital tumors constitute 34% of this series, inflammatory diseases including thyroid disorders 50%, arteriovenous abnormalities 4%, and miscellaneous disorders 12%. All patients were thoroughly evaluated clinically and with appropriate diagnostic tests, including ultrasonography (combined A-scan and B-scan), computerized axial tomography (EMI cranial scan), and radiographic tech niques (plain films and hypocycloidal poly tomography), orbital venography, and carotid arteriography. Each test was found to have diagnostic capabil ities which complemented other studies, depending upon the specific disease process involved. No one test was entirely adequate without the others. Radiographic studies demonstrated bony abnormality in 50% of tumor cases, but in only 28% of the entire series of exophthalmos cases. Primary orbital tumors had a lower hield with radiography than did secondary tumors. Computerized tomography demonstrated diagnostic soft tissue abnormality in 86% of tumors, 43% of inflammatory diseases, and an overall yield of 62% positive results. Ultrasonography proved the most versatile test for evaluation of orbital soft tissues, with 80% positive results for tumors, 87% for inflammatory disorders, and 78% overall acurate diagnosis. 568 pp. Englisch.

Leibniz and others. During the first century of its existence, this theory consisted only of isolated methods of solving certain types of differential equations; but the problem of the existence of a solution and its representability in quadratures was posed already in the second. As a result of numerous investigations it became clear that integrability in quadratures is an extremely rare phe nomenon and that the solution of many differential equations arising in applications cannot be expressed in quadratures. Also the methods of numerical integration of equations did not open the road to the general theory since these methods yield only one particular solution and this solution is obtained on a finite interval. Applications - especially the problems of celestial mechanics - required the clarification of at least the nature of the behavior of integral curves in the entire domain of their existence without integration of the equation. In this bibliography it has been my endeavour to compile references for all that has been written on the history of Dutch medicine in our country and elsewhere in our age. The main concern of this work is with the medicine of the Northern Nether lands. However, before the end ofthe sixteenth century the Northern and South ern Netherlands were not yet divided into two separate countries; they were still politically one and for the greater part spoke the same Flemish language. So be fore their separation the present-day Belgium and Netherlands also had a com mon medical history. After several years of intensive research on the effects of pollutions on forest ecosystems it is obvious that not a single specific pollutant can be made responsible but a mixture of several components act together or interact with each other. The contributions of the workshop _ reflect to a large extend the results of research projects which were started at the beginning of the eighties. They review our improved knowledge on the patterns of concentration, of the mechanism of wet and dry deposition and fog interception, modelling studies and the effect of the processes on plant receptors and surfaces. Since the 1985 symposium the pathways of pollutants leading to biological damage have been examined and are more clearly recognised. The book reflects the common interest and the continuous effort of scientists from many different disciplines to better understand the physical and chemical processes which finally lead to the observed damage of forest-trees. The idea of organizing the symposiwn was conceived by one of the editors, V. Renugopalakrislman, during the 9th International Biophysics Congress satellite symposium at Kibbutz Nof-Ginosar, Israel in 1987. It was originally supposed to dwell on 2D NMR and molecular dynamics of polypeptides and proteins.
