Selbst der Name 'Relativitätstheorie' sollte aus den physikalischen Lehrbüchern verschwinden. Die Anklage wurde vertreten von der ideologischen Führungsschicht der gewaltigsten irdischen Macht unseres Zeitalters. Der Angeklagte, in der Reife seines Lebens vor die vehementesten Angriffe gestellt, kam nur durch sein Werk zu Wort. Dies genügte jedoch, dass sich unter den sowjetischen Physikern und Philosophen noch zur Zeit Stalins mannhafte Stimmen der Verteidigung fanden. 1955 wurde der Prozess mit der offiziellen Anerkennung der Relativitäts theorie durch die Parteiphilosophie abgeschlossen. Es war ein Sieg der Wahrheit über die Gewalt. Die Folgen mussten das Ansehen der kommunistischen Ideologie erschüttern. Es hatte sich herausgestellt, dass zwischen der angeblich einzig wissenschaftlichen Philosophie und der exaktesten Naturwissen schaft, der Physik, ein Abgrund klafft, den zu überbrücken die Sowjet philosophie bis heute bemüht ist. Andererseits begannen die sowjetischen Physiker, wachgerufen durch die Appelle der Philosophen, ihr eigenes Weltbild mit adäquaten Methoden zu durchdenken. Diese ganze Ent wicklung ist von hohem Wert für eine Diagnose der geistigen Struktur der Sowjetgesellschaft.

The book was published by the Institute of Philosophy of the Academy of Sciences of the Su. The responsible editors were P. Pavelkin and G. Kurbatova and the text was prepared by eleven eminent Soviet philosophers (Y. F. Berestnev, M. A. Dynnik, P. N. Fedoseev, Ju. P. Francev, G. E. Glezerman, M. D. Kammari, F. V. Konstantinov, P. V. Kopnin, I. V. Kuznecov, M. M. Rozental', A. F. Siskin) under the direction of Konstantinov. As stated in the preface (p. 5) of the book, it was read in manuscript form by numerous scholars and professors of philosophy and then thoroughly discussed in three separate sessions (in the Academy of Sciences, and the Universities of Leningrad and Moscow). One tradition goes back to the Greek thinkers and includes practically every great name in the…history of philosophy, since almost all philosophers took a stand on epistemological problems. To be sure, theory of knowledge is not to be identified with theory of science. Science is a relatively new phenomenon, dating from modern times. It is a source of knowledge, the main source (in our type of culture), but certainly not the only one. Also, epistemology deals with questions rather far removed from the practice of science. The nature of truth; the sources of knowledge; the limits of knowledge. Many people claim to understand science without being able to solve these perennial problems. What we call today the science of science is not concerned with, say, the Kantian question how synthetic a priori truths are possible. However, the influence of the philosophical heritage is still felt in present day metascientific thOUght. Philosophy of science does exist, although in a form very different from classical epis temology. It has developed (under that name) into general metho dology of science, which roughly means: analysis of scientific theories and analysis of their validation. In both cases, mathematical and logical tools playa great role. Scientific theories are analyzed by means of modern semantics (theory of models). Firstly, that our conception of the syndrome is in a state of flux. Gone, for instance, in the past decade or two, is the requirement of… a chronic, progressive, irreversible disorder for the diag nosis. I remember the surgeon who, when I was a student, returned a referral saying he would operate on the man when his dementia got better. Feeling superior, and encouraged by the consultant psychiatrist, we students laughed a good deal at this. Before we finished clerking on that Unit a visiting Professor of Psychiatry had demonstrated the reversibility of the symptoms of dementia in a patient with a rare metabolic disorder. Perhaps ignorance is sometimes an advance on received wisdom. The lesson is the concept of dementia must always reflect the state of knowledge and is therefore in a sense ad hoc. Secondly, what the criteria for, and also who the arbiters of, the diagnosis might be is not always clear. The general theme of these meetings is 'Integration of Fundamental Polymer Science and Technology'. In order to serve this goal, all participants are accommodated in Rolduc Abbey, a well-preserved medieval monument in Limburg (The Netherlands) to provide an optimum atmosphere for the exchange of ideas. About 350 participants took part in the 4th Rolduc Polymer Meeting, which was held from 23 to 27 April 1989. This volume contains invited and selected contributed papers on topics such as solution properties, chemistry, emulsion polymerization, liquid crystalline polymers, structure/ morphology and blends/composites. We are fully aware of the fact that the reader will not find an integrated presentation of lectures in this volume. Unfortunately, it is impossible to put down in writing the atmosphere of this and previous meetings. Icelandic geoscientists have followed, and taken pa…rt in, these studies with a keen interest; one of the first tasks of the Geoscience Society of Iceland was to organize an Icelandic symposium on 'Iceland and Mid-Ocean Ridges' in 1967. At the suggestion of Dr. G. Pfuason, the Society and various local research institutions formed in 1972 an Organizing Committee for an international meeting on earth science. It was decided that it should be devoted to examining the various expressions of geo~namical forces in the North Atlantic area, in particular at the ocean ridges passing through Iceland. Apart from the scientific content of such a meeting, the organizers also felt it was highly important for scientists from both sides of the Atlantic to meet in Iceland, to become acquainted with recent progress in earth science research there and to coordinate their future research projects in the area. The meeting was held in Reykj avik 1 - 7 July, 1974, and was followed by field trips in Iceland. The workshop was designed to bring together those mathematicians and mathematical physicists who are actively working in this broad spectrum of research and to provide them with the opportunity to present their recent results and to discuss the challenges facing them in the many problems that remain. The objective of the workshop was indeed well achieved. This book contains 31 lectures presented by invited participants attending the NATO Advanced Research Workshop held in San Antonio, Texas, during the week of January 3-8, 1993. The introductory article by the editors provides a brief review of the concepts underlying these lectures (cited by author [\*]) and mentions some of their applications. The articles in the book are grouped under the following general headings: Lie groups and Lie algebras, Lie superalgebras and Lie supergroups, and Quantum groups, and are arranged in the order in which they are cited in the introductory article. Orbital and periorbital tumors constitute 34% of this…series, inflammatory diseases including thyroid disorders 50%, arteriovenous abnormalities 4%, and miscellaneous disorders 12%. All patients were thoroughly evaluated clinically and with appropriate diagnostic tests, including ultrasonography (combined A-scan and B-scan), computerized axial tomography (EMI cranial scan), and radiographic tech niques (plain films and hypocycloidal poly tomography), orbital venography, and carotid arteriography. Each test was found to have diagnostic capabil ities which complemented other studies, depending upon the specific disease process involved. No one test was entirely adequate without the others. Radiographic studies demonstrated bony abnormality in 50% of tumor cases, but in only 28% of the entire series of exophthalmos cases. Primary orbital tumors had a lower hield with radiography than did secondary tumors. Computerized tomography demonstrated diagnostic soft tissue abnormality in 86% of tumors, 43% of inflammatory diseases, and an overall yield of 62% positive results. Ultrasonography proved the most versatile test for evaluation of orbital soft tissues, with 80% positive results for tumors, 87% for inflammatory disorders, and 78% overall acurate diagnosis. 568 pp. Englisch.

Leibniz and others. During the first century of its existence, this theory consisted only of isolated methods of… solving certain types of differential equations; but the problem of the existence of a solution and its representability in quadratures was posed already in the second. As a result of numerous investigations it became clear that integrability in quadratures is an extremely rare phe nomenon and that the solution of many differential equations arising in applications cannot be expressed in quadratures. Also the methods of numerical integration of equations did not open the road to the general theory since these methods yield only one particular solution and this solution is obtained on a finite interval. Applications - especially the problems of celestial mechanics - required the clarification of at least the nature of the behavior of integral curves in the entire domain of their existence without integration of the equation. In this connection, at the end of the last century there arose the qualitative theory of differential equations, the creators of which one must by all rights consider to be H. Poincare and A. M. This was also the basic statement that came out of the 6th International Congress on 'Atherosclerosis and Cardiovascular Diseases'. The meeting was attended by specialists from various countries representing different experimental ap proaches to the cardiovascular diseases, from basic research (receptor pathol ogy, apoproteins physiopathology); to epidemiology (both observational study and prevention); to pure cardiology in its aspects of physiopathology, diagnosis and therapy; to the new invasive and non-invasive diagnostic methods; and to the presentation of studies which correlate new variables (serotonin, en dogenous opioids) with the atheromasic disease. During the earlier part of the last decade, these two approaches began to emerge as powerful tools to probe protein structures at the atomic level in solution. The developments in molecular biology ushered in the capability to design polypeptides and proteins for specific application in science and technology. The emergence of 2D NMR and molecular dynamics was greatly facilitated by contemporary developments in molecular biology and protein engineering. Therefore an international symposiwn devoted exclusively to 2D NMR and molecular dynamics studies of proteins was felt necessary to bring two major approaches in a single forum. In addition to emphasis on 2D NMR and molecular dynamics simulation, the scope of the symposiwn included optical spectroscopy, protein design, and new horizons in protein structure. Fora long period after this discovery, although many significant results were found, liquid crystal research remained a margi…nal topic of condensed matter physics. The situation changed in the sixties. At that time the remarkable electro-optical properties of liquid crystals were recognized and found soon widespread application in numeric displays. From a more fundamental point of view, the interest in disordered systems. increased in general at the same time. Liquid crystals represented an important dass of such systems. Among others, phase transitions, hydrodynamics and topological defects occurring in them attracted considerable attention. The connection between the liquid-crystalline state and the structure of biological membranes stimulated a Iot of works also. In the present volume we discuss a relatively new and rapidly developing branch of the fi. eld, namely nonlinear optical effects in liquid crystals. Optical studies have always played a signifi. cant role in liquid crystal science. Research of optical nonlinearities in liquid crystals began at the end of the sixties. Since then it became a powerful tool in the investigation of symmetry properties, interfacial phenomena or dynamic behaviour. Furthermore, several new aspects of nonlinear processes were demonstrated and studied extensively in liquid crystals.
