Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - This book presents the various types of coherent states introduced and studied in the physics and mathematics literature and describes their properties together with application to quantum physics problems. It is intended to serve as a compendium on coherent states and their applications for phys…icists and mathematicians, stretching from the basic mathematical structures of generalized coherent states in the sense of Perelomov via the semiclassical evolution of coherent states to various specific examples of coherent states (hydrogen atom, quantum oscillator, .).

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The two essays provide a critical examination of theory and research in the field of evolutionary psychology. The view advanced here is that philosophical materialism and minimalist assumptions about adaptation serve Darwinian psyc…hology better than the more popular alternative view that relies on cognitive dualism and propositional-attitude psychology to formulate evolutionary psychology theory. A commitment to cognitive dualism is destined to undermine the physical basis of behavior upon which evolutionary theory depends. Many evolutionary psychologists do not see this but are seduced by the easy way in which hypotheses can be formulated using the 'propositional-attitude' model. The challenge is to develop a materialistic and mechanistic approach to understanding human cognition and behavior, including linguistic and social behavior. 100 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The enzymatic polymerization of phenolic compounds has been generating interest in several fields such as food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. These compounds are employed for their antioxidant properties; however, their use is li…mited by their low solubility and thermal stability. Polymerization can improve their solubility and their thermal stability though and create new properties which are dependent on the molecular mass and the structure of polymers. The reaction yield, the polydispersity, the molecular mass, the structure and the properties of synthesized polymers can be controlled by the mode of control of the reaction and by the reaction conditions.Enzymatic polymerization of phenolic compounds by oxidoreductases analyze the processes used and the key factors (temperature, solvent, origin of the enzyme, structure of the substrate, reactor design, .) which control the polymerization of phenolic species by these oxidoreductase enzymes in order to obtain polymers with desired characteristics and properties. 56 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Since the time of Malthus, population has been a favourite subject for debate, but it is only during the past few decades that the full implications have begun to be generally understood among policy-makers. This change in attitude…, which still has a long way to go, has apparently been preci pitated, on one hand, by the development efforts of the Third World countries over the past two decades, and on the other, by the stark reality of the unprecedented high rates of population growth recorded in many developing countries over the same period. This population expansion, while it has been compared to earlier population growth in Europe, is of a vastly different nature, and has quite different implications. At the heigh of population growth in the Western European countries, the rate of increase was well below 2 % per annum and much closer to 1.5 %. 2 This is in vivid contrast to the situation in the less developed countries today where population growth rates tend to range from over 2% to 3.5% or even more. A major implication of this population expansion is its effects on development efforts. 208 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -John D. Kasarda By all accounts, the United States has led the world in job creation. During the past 20 years, its economy added nearly 40 million jobs while the combined European Economic Community added none. Since 1983 alone, t…he U. S. gener ated more than 15 million jobs and its unemployment rate dropped from 7. 5 percent to approximately 5 percent while the unemployment rate in much of western Europe climbed to double digits. Even Japan's job creation record pales in comparison to the United States'. with its annual employment growth rate less than half that of the United States over the past 15 years (0. 8 percent vs. 2 percent. ) Yet, as the U. S. economy has been churning out millions of jobs annually, con flicting views and heated debates have emerged regarding the quality of these new jobs and its implications for standards of living and U. S. economic competi tiveness. Many argue that the 'great American job machine' is a 'mirage' or 'grand illusion. ' Rather than adding productive, secure, well-paying jobs, most new employment, critics contend, consists of poverty level, dead-end, service sector jobs that contribute little or nothing to the nation's productivity and inter national competitiveness. Much of the blame is placed on Reagan-Bush policies that critics say undermine labor unions, encourage wasteful corporate restructur ing, foster exploitative labor practices, and reduce fiscal support for education and needed social services. 152 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -There is no shortage of general books on the subject of acid rain, or of symposium proceedings reviewing work ranging from atmospheric chemistry and deposition processes to freshwater acidification and effects on vegetation. In con…trast, the collection of papers from this Workshop is focussed on a much smaller subject, the processes of acid deposition at high altitude sites. Interest in deposition at high elevation sites comes largely from observed vertical gradients in the degree of forest damage at sites in the Federal Republic of Germany and the eastern United States. These gradients show that damage to Norway spruce and fir increases with altitude at sites in Bavaria and the Black Forest, and that Red spruce are declining at high elevation sites in the Appalachian Mountains. With the large scale of scientific interest in forest decline, cany research groups, during the last five years, have been examining atmospheric chemistry, deposition processes, and effects on vegetation and soils at upland sites. In particular there have been many recent studies of cloud and precipitation chemistry, which show much larger concentrations of all ions in cloud water than in rain or snow. These studies have also shown that processes of wet and dry deposition and also the chemistry of the air at hill tops are modified strongly by orographic effects. 692 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Modern Cardiac Surgery is based on, but does not consist completely of, papers submitted at the annual course of cardiac surgery run by the combined Institutes and Post-Graduate Hospitals involved in cardiac surgery in London (1977…). The subjects which have been chosen and included fulfil one of two criteria; either they are subjects which were not included in the previous book, The Current Status of Cardiac Surgery, or they cover subjects which needed to be updated. Because this is a teaching course and not a symposium, the emphasis has been on being informative rather than on presenting masses of results. The book has been prepared partly from manuscripts submitted by the authors and partly from annotated tapes of the proceedings of the meeting. Through out the editing and production of this book careful consideration has been given to the requirements of the readership. The book is aimed at all students of cardiac surgery and cardiology at all levels, and as much information as possible has been packed into it. Neverthe less, the editor wishes to thank the authors for the efforts they have made to be concise and clear in their presentation and for their tremendous co-opera tion in alterations which have been incorporated to make it a more readable treatise. This means that this is a book which is of value to nurses interested in cardiology in intensive care, to physiotherapists and students wishing to look up particular topics before their final examinations. 412 pp. Englisch.

It was the 35th symposium organized and sponsored by the International Astronomical Union. The majority of participants were financedfrom national sources. The Organizing Commit tee consisted of K. O. Kiepenheuer (Chairman), L. Davis, L. Dezso (Local Organizer), A.D. Fokker, R. Michard, A.B. Severny, H.J. Smith, Z. Svestka, and H. Tanaka. In order to ensure prompt publication, the manuscripts had to be supplied by the authors 1 month after the meeting. The discussions have been recorded on tape. Their reproduction in this book, however, is based almost completely on the contributors' writing down their comments and questions on the spot. Two special projects have been reported and discussed shortly during the sym posium: The world wide project 'Cooperative Study of Solar Active Regions' (CSSAR) organized by Dr. R. Michard, under the auspices of the IAU, which has put at the disposal of our solar community a precious observing material on Active Regions over a period of 6 months. 632 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Safety and Efficacy of Radiopharmaceuticals was established as a very important and comprehensive subject at the First Europe an Symposium on Radiopharmacy and Radiopharmaceuticals in Denmark in 1983. The interest in this subject h…as grown considerably since then due to the growing interest among national authorities to deal with radiopharmaceuticals. The introduction in recent years of nuclear medicine techniques based on radioactive labelled cells and on monoclonal antibodies has stressed the importance of a well functioning approval system for the clinical trial and use of new radiopharmaceuticals. The process of transferring the experience from the non radioactive drug field into the area of radiopharmaceuticals is still ongoing. International organisations such as the World Health Organisa tion is also including this into their quality assurance programme from both the radiopharmaceutical and the radiation hygiene point of view. In order to give an up-to date survey of these areas, experts were invited to prepare review papers under the following headings: Safety and Efficacy of Radiophar maceuticals with Emphasis on Biological Products, Radiophar macy/Radiation Hygiene, Legal Aspects of the Introduction of New Radiopharmaceuticals and some selected aspects of Good Radiopharmacy Practice. 388 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -For the inhabitants of many of the world's major cities and towns, estuaries provide their nearest glimpse of a natural habitat; a habitat which, despite the attempts of man to pollute it or reclaim it, has remained a fascinating i…nsight into a natural world where energy is transformed from sunlight into plant material, and then through the steps of a food chain is converted into a rich food supply for birds and fish. The biologist has become interested in estuaries as areas in which to study the responses of animals and plants to severe environmental gradients. Gradients of salinity for example, and the problems of living in turbid water or a muddy substrate, prevent most animal species from the adjacent sea or rivers from entering estuaries. In spite of these problems, life in estuaries can be very abundant because estuarine mud is a rich food supply which can support a large number of animals with a large total weight and a high annual production. Indeed estuaries have been claimed to be among the most productive natural habitats in the world. When the first edition of this book appeared, biologists were beginning to realise that the estuarine ecosystem was an ideal habitat in which to observe the processes controlling biological productivity. 224 pp. Englisch.

As in the case of its predecessors - , I hope that the relaxed atmosphere will enable the participants from all comers of the world to exchange vi…ews, not only in this room, but also at less formal moments in the cellar, on the lake, or in the buses that transport us to different parts of the Schwarzwald. We are all eternally grateful to Dr Herbert Falk for undertaking to sponsor this meeting, and to him and his staff for the impeccable organisation which will permit us to work in such a pleasant environment. In the organisation of the programme, one or two innovations have been in troduced which are perhaps foreign to routine gastroenterological meetings. First, the average age in this room is rather lower than at most gatherings of this nature, which means that those who carry out the experiments will be responsible for their presentation; they are after all the ones who have made the relevant small observations which lead to the advancement of knowledge. 448 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This volume outlines in simple terms the basic concepts of ecology. It is not a textbook of ecology, but an introduction to the subject and to the more advanced presentations of special aspects that will appear in succeeding volume…s. There are many excellent textbooks of ecology, to some of which the reader is referred and to which the present volume should also serve as a useful primer. I have linked this presentation of ecological theory to a survey of present theories of Earth History. All of earth history is, in a sense, ecology. Earth's environments have evolved throughout the ages from the time when no life existed, just as life forms have evolved from primitive to complex. It seems to me, therefore, that one should understand how these environments have come into being. I have also presented a simple account of the energy systems that are used by living things. These too need to be understood, if we are to appreciate energy problems. Man, like all other living things, requires the energy provided by his food, but unlike other creatures his way of life demands additional ('auxiliary') energy, and this has introduced a new factor to man's ecology. Hitherto, most of this auxiliary energy has been obtained from fossil fuels, coal, oil and uranium. But these are not inexhaustible; they represent capital, not income, and it is still not clear what the sources of the auxiliary energy will be. 124 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The study of birth defects has assumed an importance even greater now than in the past because mortality rates attributed to congenital anomalies have declined far less than those for other causes of death, such as infectious and n…utritional diseases. It is estimated that as many as 50% of all pregnancies terminate as miscarriages. In the majority of cases this is the result of faulty development. Major congenital malformations are found in at least 2% of all liveborn infants, and 22% of all stillbirths and infant deaths are associated with severe congenital anomalies. Teratological studies of an experimental nature are neither ethical nor justifiable in humans. Numerous investigations have been carried out in laboratory animals and other experimental models in order to improve our understanding of abnormal intrauterine development. In less than two decades the field of experimental teratology has advanced phenomenally. As a result of the wide range of information that is now accumulating, it has become possible to obtain an insight into the causes, mechanisms, and prevention of birth defects. However, considerable work will be needed before these problems can be resolved. The comributions in this volume include some of the more recent and exciting observations on the cellular and molecular aspects of developmental defects. It is not only a documentation of the latest experimental work, but it also indicates new and important areas for future research. 260 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This new volume deals with a number of important and current topics in human nutrition that we hope will be of general interest to those concerned with this subject. We have first of all a chapter by J. S. Garrow and S. Blaza on en…ergy requirements, which has a direct bearing on the problem of obesity, and which largely affects the populations of developed and afiluent countries. This is followed by a chapter on fluoride and the fluoridation of water, under the authorship of G. N. Jenkins. The addition of fluoride to drinking water has given rise to a great deal of discussion both amongst scientists and the public at large, and the present account tries to give the scientific background and a critical evaluation of established facts. The chapter by G. Owen on the nutritional status of North Americans is also likely to be of interest to other countries, as the techniques used and the problems encountered are similar to' those encountered in other parts ofthe world. A chapter on nitrates, nitrites and nitrosamines by S. R. Tannenbaum discusses a topic which again has engendered widespread interest amongst a large number of people, and where a balanced presentation of the relevant facts is particularly important. One of the fields in which biochemistry, physiology and nutrition have made enormous advances over the last few years is that of vitamin D and the new knowledge acquired on control of the metabolism of calcium and phosphorus. 260 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -When Mr. Nicolaides told me he was editing a book on Thromboem bolism I was constrained to say 'not another' for there have been a number of recent contributions to this field. Yet venous thromboembolism is a major accompaniment of… nearly all forms of medical and surgical illness. All clinicians should know about it; all should be able to integrate their knowledge into clinical management. The problems remain of what to know and where to find it, particularly in a field which draws increasingly on other areas for its fundamentals and which is also changing fast. This volume is a brave endeavour to provide a view over the whole subject. It could not possibly succeed absolutely and both editor and contributors undoubtedly realise this. Nevertheless they have put at our disposal know ledge of a wider kind than that available before and thus made it possible for the relatively inexpert such as myself to perceive how complex are the disturbances we produce by surgery or are produced by illness and where we can hope for advances in understanding and therapy in the future. A text of this kind hardly needs a foreword-it is of self evident value, although I expect the pace set by its writers and others in the field will, with the additional stimulus provided by this synthesis of ideas that has been achieved, soon require another volume. In the meantime it is a timely venture. H. A. F. 368 pp. Englisch.

Regrettably many of the papers are in shortened version. This was an inter disciplinary assembly designed to focus on the synthesis of generic reliability concepts and technology and to discuss relevant teaching and research in universities and colleges. One important objective was, of course, to give opportunity for interchange of information on advanced techniques in reliability in various fields. The Institute was held in Dale Hall, one of the halls of residence of the University of Liverpool, England, from 17th to 28th July, 1973. Sixty-four engineers from twelve countries attended, namely, 27 from U. K. , 14 from U. S. These activities include toxicological and ecological research, control technology development, the pro mulgation of regulatory guidelines and standards, and the monitoring of environmental materials and specimen banking. In the absence of effective monitoring environmental materials and spe cimen banking, the detection of serious environmental contamination from pollutants may occur only after critical damage has been done. Environmental problems are independent of national boundaries and international collaborative programmes should be encouraged. Sponsoring organisations and other international and national bodies should encourage monitoring and specimen bank programmes and develop harmonised sy stems for data acquisition and evaluation. An international pilot programme of monitoring and specimen banking is needed and is technically feasible. The conclusions and recommendations, for both implementation and research, should be of inte rest to other international and national bodies in addition to the three organisation sponsoring this International Workshop. Nevertheless this joint sponsorship should help to assure that the re sulting conclusions and recommendations will have a worldwide audience and that effective coor dination of existing programmes will be possible. 612 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The Eleventh American Peptide Symposium was held on the San Diego campus of the University of California in picturesque La Jolla on July 9-14, 1989. More than 1100 participants from around the world came to attend a scientific prog…ram comprised of an assortment of oral presentations, posters and exhibits. Most rewarding to us was the regular attendance at all the scientific sessions by our registered guests despite the beautiful scenery offered by La Jolla and San Diego county. Indeed for all of us, the purpose of the biennial American Peptide Symposium is to try to keep up with a fast evolving and fascinating field. The goal of the proceedings of these meetings is to provide the scientific community unable to attend some or all of the Eleventh American Peptide Symposium with a synopsis of current results in peptide research. Of 65 oral presentations and approximately 390 poster displays, the Program Committee selected 393 articles for publication. A few manuscripts by distinguished invited speakers were unfortunately not received in time to appear in these proceedings. All manuscripts herein were selected on the basis of their originality at the time of presentation and their significance in the development of peptide-related research. As in the past, this Eleventh meeting brought together scientists with a wide range of expertise, which was harnessed to address and solve basic as well as applied scientific problems in broad areas. 1172 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -A practising clinician is required to use knowledge from many differ ent fields. It is unrealistic to expect him to be master of more than a few. In reality, clinicians acquire a smattering of information on most relevant subjects,… and learn which texts provide the detailed informa tion which is occasionally required on more highly specialized matters. In my professional contacts with clinicians and medical students it has become evident that they often lack the simple frame work of microbiological knowledge necessary to guide their actions. This is because standard textbooks and learned treatises alike are con cerned with imparting a body of information rather than with present ing what the doctor needs to know in order to manage his patients. This volume is an attempt to help clinicians in their everyday practice. To that end I have kept it short and have not dwelt at length even on those topics which especially interest me. No attempt has been made to write a textbook: many of these already exist. A few refer ences are given to major reviews and to sources justifying some of the more forthright statements. The subject of medical microbiology is broad and involved. I have therefore seen it as my task to simplify the presentation of the material, being very selective with regard to content and giving my own views on matters of clinical significance. 184 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The report examines the extent of environmental damage in the Community and in certain other European countries that may be attributable to acid pollutant emissions within Member States. The study assesses the evidence for possible… causal effects and considers the physical, chemical and biological processes which have been suggested as damage mechanisms. Concern in Europe has grown in the past few years as a result of observed damage to forests found principally in central and southern Germany, and also because of the loss of fish populations in the lakes of parts of south west Norway and Sweden. More recently, a few lakes, rivers and streams in Scotland, England and Wales, with geological and upper river catchments similar in character to those areas of Scandinavia referred to, have also reported absence or death of fish. Acid precipitation is considered a possible contributory cause. Loss of needles from pine trees has also been found in other areas of the Community. Less well appreciated is the existence of damage to building materials, caused by short range acid pollutant effects and the possibility under certain conditions that yields of some crops and vegetables are affected by the dry deposition of acid pollutants and their derivative products. Historically most attention has focused on S02, and its oxidised 'wet' form, sulphuric acid. Overall emissions of S02 in the Community have declined in the last ten years and this trend may well continue. 172 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -In 1976, on the occasion of the Centennial of the Ameri can Chemical Society, H. A. RESrnG and C. G. WADE organized an international symposium on magnetic resonance in collo1d and in terface science which brought together a large n…umber of scien tists from the United States and from abroad. The aim of this symposium was to include all experimental inorganic, organic and biochemical systems in which molecules are bound to interfaces and to show the contribution of various techniques based on ma gnetic resonance to the knowledge of these systems. This ambi tious program resulted into a very interesting gathering that initiated a more interdisciplinary approach to the problem of interfaces. Because of the success of this symposium it was sug gested that a similar meeting should be organized in Europe within the next three years. Professor J. FRAISSARD accepted this task but, conside ring the rapid developments in the theory and in the applica tions of the magnetic resonance spectroscopies, the organ1z1ng committee decided to arrange the meeting to be held in MENTON (France) in two parts, the first being a School and the second the Symposium proper. The former was' intended to review and to teach theoretical aspects as well as to discuss the experimental results derived from these advanced methods; the Symposium was to be for the discussion of the latest results at the highest level. 736 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Jaundice ofnewbom infants was described by several authors in the 17th century. The condition, however, was usually thought of as being similar to adult jaundice and due ro occlusion of the bile ducts by 'glutinous humours'. On the… other hand, some writers reported on the fact that more than one consecutive baby was often affected, and there is a classic example of the disease in twins written by Louyse Bourgeois, the midwife of Marie de Medici, in 1609. It was not until early in the 20th century that it was realised that the common link between these familial cases was anaemia, and later still that this was of the haemolytic type. The breakthrough, in terms of an idea, came in 1938, when Darrow postulated that the baby's red cells were destroyed by an immune reaction on the part of the mother, the result of immunisation by paternal factors in the fetus. Shortly afterwards Wiener discovered an entirely new blood group system, 'Rh', and it was found that it was in compatibility within this system that was responsible for the vast majority of cases of haemolytic disease of the newborn. 332 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This book stems from the belief that undergraduate, and many graduate, students in geomorphology are taught far too little about the theoretical foundation of the discipline. This is a tragic oversight because all disci plines exis…t solely by virtue of a body of theory; furthermore, all substan tive research must, of necessity, be directed at improving this body of theory. While the centrality of theory is a characteristic of all science, it appears that it is fieldwork that has achieved sacrosanct status in geo morphology. The supreme standing of fieldwork would seem at first sight to be supported by such comments as that cited by Ager (1984, p. 42): 'My old professor - the great H. H. Read - once said, 'The best geologist is, other things being equal, he who has seen the most rocks'. ' The key issue in Read's comment is obviously 'other things being equal'; what are these other things For they will be just as applicable to geomorphology as to geology at large. One is certainly personal ability, but another critical com ponent is the individual's knowledge of relevant theory. Pursuit of theo retical knowledge is not generally a favored activity in geomorphology, a situation epitomized by Chorley's (1978, p. 1) one-liner: 'Whenever anyone mentions theory to a geomorphologist, he instinctively reaches for his soil auger. 268 pp. Englisch.
