As usual the theme of the Conference was the same of that of the preparatory Colloque held in Brussels i…n 1979: Social security reforms in Europe. The reports of that Colloque were published as Part I I of the Yearbook 1978-1980. Part I of the Yearbook 1980-1981 contains the reports presented in Peruggia. The reports are focussed on three items: The financing of social security (J.P. Launay, Jan B.M. Pierik, J Ct. rn Henrik Petersen and Guy Perrin); The social benefits (Bernd Schulte and Sven Guldburg) and The organization of social security (A.J. Ogus, A. Berenstein and Jef van Langendonck) . The Yearbook contains also two national reports (M. Magrez and Asbj~rn Kj Ct. nstad), not available to be included in Yearbook I I 1978-1980. Finally the Yearbook contains a report from Guy Perrin on the social security problems of migrant workers and the synthesis report of Pasquale Sandulli. It's a pity that we could not include the report of Lucia Vitali, Le prestazini per inval idita nel sistema ital iano di sicurezza sociale: un anal isi economica, and the report of the Region of Umbria since there was no English or French translation available. Goodwin (editors) Polymer colloids, more commonly known as latexes, are important in the manufacture of synthetic elastomers, commodity polymers, surface… coatings, adhesive and numerous specialty products. The significant growth of the commercial production of polymer latexes during the past decade has been due to a number of factors. First, water-based systems, especially paints and coatings, avoid many of the environ mental problems associated with the solvent-based systems. Second, polymer colloid products can be custom designed to meet a wide range of application requirements. Third, large scale emulsion polymeri zation proceeds smoothly and controllably with a wide range of monomers to produce stable polymer colloids of high molecular weight. Polymer colloids are also important in functional scientific studies. This importance arises from the spherical shape of the particles, range of attainable particle diameters and the uniformity of their size distribution, and the possibility of controlling and character izing the particle surface. Polymer colloids are useful as size standards in microscopy and in instrument calibration, and as carriers in antibody-enzyme diagnostic tests. As suspensions of uniform spherical particles, they are ideal experimental systems to test the series of colloidal phenomena as stability and coagulation, electric kinetic or rheological proper ties, and light scattering. In recent years, polymer colloids have received attention as models for many-body molecular phenomena, including the order-disorder transitions and the mechanics of crystalline phases. 272 pp. Englisch.

The main base of ICARDA's activities is at its principal research station near Aleppo in northern Syria. From here a wide range of research activities have been developed throughout the region served, in close collaboration with the national programs. This report concerns the activities of one such collaborative research project covering Egypt and the Sudan, the ICARDA/ IFAD Nile Valley Project on Faba Beans. It is by far the largest of ICARDA's collaborative projects and also the most successful. Faba Beans are an important food crop in many countries of the region and as such are a main focus of ICARDA's food legume program together with lentils and chickpeas.However, Aleppo does not provide a suita ble environment in which to conduct research of relevance to the irrigated agriculture of Egypt and northern Sudan: two countries in which faba beans are immensely important in the diets, particularly of the poorer sector in both countries. 164 pp. Englisch.

In this attempt we decided to consider zinc enzymes, copper oxidases, cytochromes and cytochrome oxida…se. The choice is in part due to the great attention that the current specialized literature devotes to these topics, which are now debated among chemists, biochemists, biophysicists, etc . We believe that hydration reactions, hydrolytic and oxidative processes have much in common from the point of view of the reaction mechanisms, the comprehension of which represents a frontier of science. For these reasons these topics have been the subject of the NATO-ASI held at San Miniato, Pisa, Italy, from May 28 to June 8, 1982. We hope we can transfer here the main conclusions of what (we believe) was a very stimulating scientific meeting. We would like to thank the local saving bank, Cassa di Risparmio di San Miniato, for helping in many ways. The continuing process of specialization in most branches, the emergence of new schools of thought, particularly in philosophical logic and the philosophy of language, the convergence of interest (though not necessarily of opinion) of different traditions upon certain prob lems, and the increasing attention being paid to the history of philosophy in discussions of contemporary problems are the most important contributory factors. Surveys of the present kind are a valuable source of knowledge of this complexity and may as such be an assistance in renewing the understanding of one's own philosophical problems. Neuware -Assembling a program in bioinorganic chemistry that is scientifi cally relevant, well defined, and self-consistent is not an easy task. In this attempt we decided to consider zinc enzymes, copper oxidases, cytochromes and cytochrome oxidase.…The choice is in part due to the great attention that the current specialized literature devotes to these topics, which are now debated among chemists, biochemists, biophysicists, etc . We believe that hydration reactions, hydrolytic and oxidative processes have much in common from the point of view of the reaction mechanisms, the comprehension of which represents a frontier of science. For these reasons these topics have been the subject of the NATO-ASI held at San Miniato, Pisa, Italy, from May 28 to June 8, 1982. We hope we can transfer here the main conclusions of what (we believe) was a very stimulating scientific meeting. We would like to thank the local saving bank, Cassa di Risparmio di San Miniato, for helping in many ways. Participants came from the fields of geology, seismology, oceanography, geotechnical and structural engineering and risk analysis. The wide range of participant affiliations included institutes, Observatories, universities, oil companies, consultants and insurance firms. All nationalities around the North Sea were present, in addition to some experts from outside the region. All participants were present on the basis of personal invitation. The idea of organizing the Workshop stemmed from conside- tions, such as: the rapidly increasing material and personel investments and versatility of type of structures in the basin.during the past decade; - the present-day important role Jf the North Sea oil and gas production in the economy of Western Europe; and - the increase of potential environmental risks in the region. Although devastating earthquakes are almost unknown in the area and seismic hazard is not great, the seismic risk grows with the growing size and number of structures in the area. The study of the potential seismic risks, therefore, cannot be neglected any more. The siting and design of offshore platforms and submarine pipelines are controlled by the degree of their vulnerability as well as the seismic hazard. in the region. 446 pp. Englisch.

It is an awesome reflection that the…carbon in our bodies is the very carbon which was generated during the birth of a star. There is a perceptible continuum through the billions of years which can be revealed by the study of chemistry. Studies in nucleosynthesis have related the origin of the elements to the life history of the stars. The chemical elements we find on earth, HYdrogen, Carbon, Oxygen, and Nitrogen, were created in astronomical processes that took place in the past, and these elements are not spread throughout space in the form of stars and galaxies. Radioastronomers have discovered a vast array of organic molecules in the interstellar medium which have a bearing on prebiological chemical processes. Many of the molecules found so far contain the four elements, C, N, 0, H. Except for the chem ically unreactive He, these four elements are the most abundant in the galaxy. The origin of polyatomic interstellar molecules is an unresolved problem. While we can explain the formation of some diatomic molecules as due to two atom collisions, it is much more difficult to form polyatomic molecules by collisions between diatomic molecules and atoms.
