My first introduction to the subject was in response to a need for information about a specific problem in Tribology. As a practising engineer with a background only in elementary Strength of Materials, I approached that problem initially using the con cepts of concentrated forces and superposition. Today, with a rather more extensive knowledge of analytical techniques in Elasticity, I still find it helpful to go back to these roots in the elementary theory and think through a problem physically as well as mathematically, whenever some new and unexpected feature presents difficulties in research. This way of thinking will be found to permeate this book. My engineering background will also reveal itself in a tendency to work examples through to final expressions for stresses and displacements, rather than leave the derivation at a point where the remaining manipulations would be routine. With the practical engineering reader in mind, I have endeavoured to keep to a minimum any dependence on previous knowledge of Solid Mechanics, Continuum Mechanics or Mathematics. 322 pp. Englisch.

The principal aim of the Adv…anced Study Institute, as reflected in these Proceedings, was to bring together recent and up-to-date developments of the subject, and to give directions for future research. Amongst the main topics covered during this Advanced Study Institute is the subject of uni variate and multivariate wavelet decomposition over spline spaces. This is a relatively new area in approximation theory and an increasingly impor tant subject. The work involves key techniques in approximation theory cardinal splines, B-splines, Euler-Frobenius polynomials, spline spaces with non-uniform knot sequences. A number of scientific applications are also highlighted, most notably applications to signal processing and digital im age processing. Developments in the area of approximation of functions examined in the course of our discussions include approximation of periodic phenomena over irregular node distributions, scattered data interpolation, Pade approximants in one and several variables, approximation properties of weighted Chebyshev polynomials, minimax approximations, and the Strang Fix conditions and their relation to radial functions. It provides the essential information for an understanding of the underlying theory, and solution of some of the basic problems. It also provides a basis to study the voluminous shell literature. Beyond being primarily a textbook, it is intended also for self study by practising engineers who would like to learn more about the behaviour of shells. The book has two parts: Part I deals with shells of isotropic materials. In this part the mathematical formulations are introduced involving curvilinear coordinates. The techniques of solutions and resulting behavior is compared to planar thin walled isotropic structures such as plates and beams. Part II then treats the behavior of shells, involving anisotropic composite materials, so widely used today. It grew out of a Rodin Remediation Foundation International conference held on this topic in Boulde…r, Colorado in 1990, which included most of the world's experts on the genetics and neurology of dyslexia. Ten years ago a volume on this topic would scarcely been possible, and now we have an emerging, comprehensive neuroscientific understanding of this complex behavioral disorder that goes from genes to brain to behavior. Building on recent advances in the understanding of the cognitive phenotype of dyslexia, these authors present new data on both the etiology and brain mechanisms underlying that phenotype. Reading disability or dyslexia has a high familial recurrence rate, and is partly heritable. Genetic linkage studies are beginning to identify the possible locations of genes influencing this phenotype. On the neurological side, several independent studies have found neuroanatomical differences in the dyslexic brain, which are due to early changes in brain development. Thus, contrary to the views held by some educators that dyslexia is a myth, the results presented in this book firmly establish dyslexia as a real, biological condition. The Workshop was organised to provide a forum for the discussion among prac titioners of the state-of-the-art in the treatment of the macroscopic, non-equilibrium properties of gases. The macroscopic quantities considered all arise as a result of the pairwise interactions of molecules in states perturbed from an equilibrium, Maxwellian distribution. The non-equilibrium properties of gases have been studied in detail for well over a century following the formulation of the Boltzmann equation in 1872. Since then the range of phenomena amenable to experimental study has expanded greatly from the properties characteristic of a bulk, non-uniform gas, such as the viscosity and thermal conductivity, to the study of differential scattering cross-sections in molecular beams at thermal energies, to studies of spectral-line widths of individual molecules and of Van der Waals complexes and even further. The common thread linking all of these studies is found in the corresponding theory which relates them all to the potential energy function describing the interaction of pairs of molecules. Significant contributions have been made both on the fundamental aspects of interface characteristics and on the suitability of the layered materials in photoelectrochemical (semiconductor/electrolyte junctions) and in solid state photovoltaic(Schottky and p-n junctions) cells. New insights into the physical and chemical characteristics of the contact surfaces have been gained and many new applications of these materials have been revealed. In particular, the basal plane surface of the layered materials shows low chemical reactivity and specific electronic behaviour with respect to isotropic solids. In electrochemical systems, the inert nature of these surfaces characterized by saturated chemical bonds has been recognized from studies on charge transfer reactions and catalysis. In addition, studies on the role of the d-band electronic transitions and the dynamics of the photogene rated charge carriers in the relative stability of the photoelectrodes of the transition metal dichalcogenides have deepened the understanding of the interfacial photoreactions. Transition metal layered compounds are also recognized as ideal model compounds for the studies Involving surfaces: photoreactions, adsorption phenomena and catalysis, scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy and epitaxial growth of thin films. The Workshop was organised to provide a forum for the discussion among prac titioners of the state-of-the-art in the treatment of the macroscopic, non-equilibrium properties of gases. The macroscopic quantities considered all arise as a result of the pairwise interactions of molecules in states perturbed from an equilibrium, Maxwellian distribution. The non-equilibrium properties of gases have been studied in detail for well over a century following the formulation of the Boltzmann equation in 1872. Since then the range of phenomena amenable to experimental study has expanded greatly from the properties characteristic of a bulk, non-uniform gas, such as the viscosity and thermal conductivity, to the study of differential scattering cross-sections in molecular beams at thermal energies, to studies of spectral-line widths of individual molecules and of Van der Waals complexes and even further. The common thread linking all of these studies is found in the corresponding theory which relates them all to the potential energy function describing the interaction of pairs of molecules. Thus, accompanying the experimental development there has been a corresponding improvement in the theoretical formulation of the quantities characterising the various phenomena. 312 pp. Englisch.
