The Symposium is organized annually by the Institute of Theoretical Physics of the University of Wroclaw. Max Born was a stude…nt and later on an assistant at the University of Wroclaw (Wroclaw belonged to Germany at this time and was called Breslau). The topic of the Max Born Sympo sium varies each year reflecting the developement of theoretical physics. The subject of this Symposium 'Stochasticity and quantum chaos' may well be considered as a continuation of the research interest of Max Born. Recall that Born treats his 'Lectures on the mechanics of the atom' (published in 1925) as a nrst volume of a complete monograph (supposedly to be written by another person). His lectures concern the quantum mechanics of integrable systems. The quantum mechanics of non-integrable systems was the subject of the Third Max Born Symposium. It is known that classical non-integrable Hamiltonian systems show a chaotic behaviour. On the other hand quantum systems bounded in space are quasiperi odic. We believe that quantum systems have a reasonable classical limit. It is not clear how to reconcile the seemingly regular behaviour of quantum systems with the possible chaotic properties of their classical counterparts. The quantum proper ties of classically chaotic systems constitute the main subject of these Proceedings. Other topics discussed are: the quantum mechanics of dissipative systems, quantum measurement theory, the role of noise in classical and quantum systems. 236 pp. Englisch.

Since 1986 a lot has changed in the world: new countries with old names appeared on the map, while recognized frontiers vanish…ed. As the organizing editors we tried to follow these evolutions as closely as possible. In many cases we were able to establish communication with our correspondents as usual; nevertheless we had to delete a total of 8 countries. Thanks to correspondents from 74 different countries we are now able to present this edition, comprising a total of 1800 institutes, including 20,000 names of individual research workers. We are very grateful to the correspondents from 17 newly enlisted countries who performed pioneer work for us. Noteworthy is the fact that especially the Asian continent made a leap forward with contributions from 13 countries in 1986 to 19 in the present volume of 'Horticultural Research International'. At the secretariat we will continue to extend our network, so please feel free to send us any suggestions or additions you would like to make. For the first time we added a list of international organizations relevant to horticulture. In the editing process a further standardization has been used to reach an easily readable and comparable survey per country. Hopefully this directory will again facilitate cooperation on a worldwide scale among horticulturists active in governmental, academic, extensional, educational, technical or commercial fields. 1004 pp. Englisch.

Taken together, these books give a complete pre sentation of the statistical mechanics of continuous systems, both quantum and classical, from the common point of view. Both books have similar contents. They deal with the investigation of states of in finite systems, which are described by infinite sequences of statistical operators (reduced density matrices) or Green's functions in the quantum case and by infinite sequences of distribution functions in the classical case. The equations of state and their solutions are the main object of investigation in these books. For infinite systems, the solutions of the equations of state are constructed by using the thermodynamic limit procedure, accord ing to which we first find a solution for a system of finitely many particles and then let the number of particles and the volume of a region tend to infinity keeping the density of particles constant. In fact the activities related to this particular field of non-Newtonian fluid mechanics have focused on the fol…lowing questions: which type of constitutive equation describes non-Newtonian fluid behaviour; how to measure fluid parameters; and what type of computational scheme leads to reliable, stable and cost-effective computer programs. During the same period, typical non-Newtonian fluid phenomena have been experimentally examined, such as the flow through a `four-to-one' contraction, the flow around a sphere or separation flow, providing fresh challenges for numerical modellers. Apart from momentum transport, however, fluid flow is strongly influenced by heat treansport in most real industrial operations in which non-Newtonian fluids are processed. The IUTAM Symposium on `Numerical Simulation of Nonisothermal Flow of Viscoelastic Liquids' held at Rolduc Abbey in Kerkrade, the Netherlands, November 1--3, 1993, was organised to monitor the state of affairs in regard to the influence of nonisothermal effects on the flow of a viscoelastic liquid. A synthesis of the Kleiner Feldberg cloud properties and a comparison with experimental data is then provided by a paper which models the airflow and cloud mycrophysics and chemistry for selected cloud episodes during the experiment. Deposition of trace substances via cloud interception with the vegetation is the subject of the next paper, which integrates experimental data in a deposition resistance model. A technical paper at the end of the issue reports on a newly developed holographic technique to measure cloud droplet size distribution, which was tested for the first time during this experiment. The collaborative nature of the work accomplished within GCE is emphasized by the large authorship of most papers presented in this issue. This should not be regarded with surprise, but rather as an indication of the interdisciplinary efforts of the GCE scientific community for the accomplishment of this study.
