They introduce the main ideas of his later pheno menology, the one that goes beyond the phenomenology of the Logische Untersuchungen. These lectures and Husserl's summary of them entitled 'The Train of Thoughts in the Lectures' were edited by Dr. Walter Biemel and first published in 1950 under the 1 title Die Idee der Phiinomenologie. Husserl wrote the summary on the night of the last lecture, not for formal delivery but for his own use. This accounts for the fact that the summary contains incomplete sentences. There are some discrepancies between Lecture V and the corresponding passages in the summary. We may suppose that the passages in the summary are a closer approximation to what Husserl wanted to say. 88 pp. Englisch.

Although he was not a historian of philosophy, Husserl's… his torical reflections convinced him that phenomenology is the necessary culmination of a centuries-old endeavor and the solution to the contemporary crisis in European science and European humanity itself.l This teleological viewpoint re quires the commentator to consider the tradition of Western philosophy from Husserl's own perspective. Husserl maintained that the Cartesian tum to the 'Cogito' represents the crucial breakthrough in the historical advance of Western thought toward philosophy as rigorous science. Hence 2 he concentrated almost exclusively on the modem era. Much has been written of Husserl's relationship to Descartes, Kant, and the neo-Kantians. His connections with Locke, Berkeley, and Hume have not been examined as closely despite his fre quent allusions to these British empiricists. Among these thinkers David Hume gained from Husserl the more extensive considera tion. Commentators have pointed out correctly that Husserl always criticized unsparingly Hume's sheer empiricistic approach to the problem of cognition. Such an approach, in Husserl's view, can only result in the 'naturalization of consciousness' from which stem that 'psychologism' and 'sensualism' which lead Hume inevitably into the contradictory impasse of solipsism 3 and skepticism. 162 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -It is a truism that, with only a few notable exceptions, western scholars only belatedly turned their attention to the phenomenon of minority nationalism in the USSR. In the last two decades, however, the topic has increasingly occupied the a…ttention of specialists on the Soviet Union, not only because its depths and implications have not yet been adequately plumbed, but also because it is clearly a potentially explosive problem for the Soviet system itself. The problem that minority nationalism poses is perceived rather differently at the 'top' of Soviet society than at the 'bottom. ' The elite views - or at least rationalize- the problem through the lens of Marxism-Leninism, which explains nationalist sentiment as a part of the 'super structure,' a temporary phenomenon that will disappear in the course of building communism. That it has not done so is a primary source of concern for the Soviet leadership, who do not seem to understand it and do not wish to accept its reality. This is based on a fallacious conceptuali zation of ethnic nationalism as determined wholly by external, or objective, factors and therefore subject to corrective measures. In terms of origins, it is believed to be the result of past oppression and discrimination; it is thus seen as a negative attitudinal set the essence of which lies in tangible, rather than psychological, factors. The general aim of th…is Summer School was to give a coordinated intro duction to the theory of representations of semisimple Lie groups and to non-commutative harmonic analysis on these groups, together with some glance at physical applications and at the related subject of random walks. As will appear to the reader, the order of the papers - which follows relatively closely the order of the lectures which were actually give- follows a logical pattern. The two first papers are introductory: the one by R. Blattner describes in a very progressive way a path going from standard Fourier analysis on IR' to non-commutative harmonic analysis on a locally compact group; the paper by J. Wolf describes the structure of semisimple Lie groups, the finite-dimensional representations of these groups and introduces basic facts about infinite-dimensional unitary representations. Two of the editors want to thank particularly these two lecturers who were very careful to pave the way for the later lectures. Both these chapters give also very useful guidelines to the relevant literature. 508 pp. Englisch.
