Well based and correctly analyzed large mathematical models can successfully be used to solve this task. The use of such models leads to the treatment of huge computational tasks. The efficient solution of such problems requires combined research from specialists working in different fields. The aim of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop (NATO ARW) entitled 'Advances in Air Pollution Modeling for Environmental Security' was to invite specialists from all areas related to large-scale air pollution modeling and to exchange information and plans for future actions towards improving the reliability and the scope of application of the existing air pollution models and tools. This ARW was planned to be an interdisciplinary event, which provided a forum for discussions between physicists, meteorologists, chemists, computer scientists and specialists in numerical analysis about different ways for improving the performance and the quality of the results of different air pollution models. 420 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -uring the spring of 1960, an uncle showed me a 'petrifying spring' near Plaxtol in Kent Dwhere twigs had been encased in a calcareous jacket. A twig was collected and having - cently been given I. Evan's Observer's Book of Geology by my p…arents, I found a photograph of another petrifying spring and an explanation of its origin. In those days, Derbyshire was too far for a holiday destination, and I took little further interest until a research studentship with Professor G. E. Fogg became available in 1971. Tony Fogg had recently moved to the University College of North Wales, Bangor and the research was to be into cyanobacterium mats, with fieldwork along the Red Sea coast. The fieldwork never materialised but my interest in algal mats had been aroused. A chance stroll along the Bangor shore revealed beautifully calcified cya- bacterium mats, and Tony generously allowed me to investigate these instead. The old Plaxtol collection was retrieved and yielded abundant cyanobacteria. It became apparent that here was a wealth of information about a rock whose formation was so rapid, that the process could be studied in days rather than years - an exceptional state of affairs. A search of the literature also revealed that the rock, a form of travertine, had other unusual features. 460 pp. Englisch.

The numerous obituaries and memorial tributes that have appeared following Bourdieu's untimely death have revealed something of his life and career, but few have stressed the intersection of his social origins, career trajectory, and public intellectual life with the changing political and social context of France. This is precisely what David Swartz's 'In memoriam' attempts to accomplish. In it he emphasizes the coincidence of Bourdieu's young and later adulthood with the period of decolonization, the May 1968 French university crisis, the opening up of France to privatization of many domains previously entrusted to the state (l'état providence), and, most threatening to post-World War II reforms, the emergence of globalization as the hegemonic structure of the 21st century. The idea of congresses devoted to mechanics, can be traced back to a conference on problems of uid mechanics in Innsbruck, 1922. It was organized by four individuals, whose names, are and will, remain very wellknowntonextgenerationsofscientists,C.W.Oseen,T.Levi-Civite, T.vonKarm an,andL.Prandtl. Thisconferencewassofruitful,thatthe organizers decided to arrange similar meetings in the future, every four years, and to extend the scope of the future meetings to include solid mechanics. Hence a series of meetings started eighty years agowiththe st 1 ICTAM held in Delft, Netherlands. From the meetingsoftheCongress Committee sprang the idea of a more permanent organization to look out for the world interests in the mechanical sciences. Thus, IUTAM, theInternational Unionof Theor- ical and Applied Mechanics, was formed on September 26, 1946. Depending on species a…nd environmental conditions, it consumes 25-75% of all the carbohydrates produced in photosynthesis - even more at extremely slow growth rates. Respiration in plants can also proceed in a manner that produces neither metabolic energy nor carbon skeletons, but heat. This type of respiration involves the cyanide-resistant, alternative oxidase; it is unique to plants, and resides in the mitochondria. The activity of this alternative pathway can be measured based on a difference in fractionation of oxygen isotopes between the cytochrome and the alternative oxidase. Heat production is important in some flowers to attract pollinators; however, the alternative oxidase also plays a major role in leaves and roots of most plants. Therefore, comets have a prominent role in the history of scienti cthought, that goes back to the most ancient civilizations. The last apparition of comet Halley in 1986 was a landmark since it arouse a great expectation in the scienti c community and in the public at large. For the rst time, a otilla of spacecrafts visited a comet. Agreat number of popular and technical books were written on Halley, and comets in general, around the mid-eighties. The interest in comets never subsided after Halley's passage which is re ected in the large volume of printed material on these bodies. I have taken the challenge to write a new book on comets that summarizes most of the recent advances on thesubject, including my own workdeveloped during the last 25 years. 396 pp. Englisch.

As such, respiration is an essential component of a plant¿s carbon budget. Depending on species and e…nvironmental conditions, it consumes 25-75% of all the carbohydrates produced in photosynthesis ¿ even more at extremely slow growth rates. Respiration in plants can also proceed in a manner that produces neither metabolic energy nor carbon skeletons, but heat. This type of respiration involves the cyanide-resistant, alternative oxidase; it is unique to plants, and resides in the mitochondria. The activity of this alternative pathway can be measured based on a difference in fractionation of oxygen isotopes between the cytochrome and the alternative oxidase. Heat production is important in some flowers to attract pollinators; however, the alternative oxidase also plays a major role in leaves and roots of most plants.
