Utilizing glacial and loess deposits, we have compared glaciations that occurred in North and South America in order to determine if events are synchronous or not, to explore forcing mechanisms, and to compare glaciations with cold periods of the Marine Oxygen Isotope stages and the loess/paleosol records of China. Stratigraphic sections containing a variety of glacial deposits, some with interbedded volcanics, as well as loess deposits, were used in reconstructing the glacial history. The Late Pleistocene (Brunhes Chron) Last Glacial Maximum is recognized in mountain and continental areas of North America but only in the mountains of South America. Commonly our comparisons indicate roughly synchronous glaciations on the two continents, whereas other glaciations are more elusive and difficult to compare. Although our comparisons are at low resolutions, the results suggest that Milankovitch forcing is most likely the dominant trigger for hemispheric glaciation modified by local factors. 84 pp. Englisch.

This was the third in aseries of meetings organized in the framework of the European Communities (EC) programme for the coordination of agricultural research. The emphasis of the Mariensee meeting on the application of nuclear magnetic resonance techniques benefitted greatly from new equipment just installed at the Institute. After discussing the basic principles of the NMR technique and comparing it with alternative, non-destructive methods of body composition analyses, the programme of the Mariensee group was discussed. ' This has been verified by salters, bakers, confectioners and ice cream manufacturers in America and western Europe. Hickory nuts and macadamia nuts are close behind, but are available only in limited supply. Pecans are among the nuts highest in oil content. In general, the varieties of nuts with the highest oil content are also rich in flavor and tender in texture. Some varieties of pecans (i. e. , Schley and Curtis) have been shown to contain as much as 76% oil. The oil in pecans is highly unsaturated, which means it is desirable from a nutritional standpoint but that it is also highly susceptible to oxidation which can cause pecans to tum stale and rancid. For this reason, pecans are considered to be semi-perishable and are not used in some 'fine' products due to their limited shelf-life. The current interest in the structure and function of biological membranes gives great expectations that in the near future we may understand the details of ligand-receptor interaction. In a similar way the availability of genetic systems has also clarified the interrelationship between animal retrovirus receptors even if the molecular structure remains to be determined. Billions of pounds of copolymers are manufactured annually by means of the emulsion polymerization process. 'Commodity' polymers as well 'specialty' polymers are prepared today for use in a wide variety of applications: synthetic rubber, floor coatings, paints, adhesives, binders for non-woven fabrics, high-impact polymers latex foam, additives for construction materials such as cement and concrete, and rheological modifiers. They are also used in numerous biomedical applications: such as diagnostic tests, immunoassays, biological cell-labeling, (identi fication and separation), and drug delivery systems. Small quantities of monodisperse polymer colloids are used as size calibration standards and find extensive use as model colloids to test theories in colloids surface and rheological studies. And as for methods design, this book exposes the fallacies in the still-common 'cohort' and 'case-control' studies, defines the essentials of all etiogenetic studies, and then addresses the true options for design in this framework of shared essentials. A good deal of attention is also given to the still commonly-held, very major, twin fallacies that screening for an illness is a preventive intervention, to be studied by randomized trials, and that research on it can imply rational guidelines or recommendations regarding decisions about the screening. The first application of these remarkable compounds to produce ethanol by fermentation is lost to antiquity. Payer and Persoz (Ann. Chim. Phys. , 53, 73 (1833ii)) appear to have provided the first step toward understanding this com plex area when they reported the isolation of diastase in 1833. These workers showed that diastase could catalyze the hydrolysis of starches to sugars. Somewhat earlier Kirchhoff (Schwigger's Journal, 4, 108 (1812)) had shown that a small amount of dilute acid could hydrolyze a seemingly endless amount of starch to sugars. The genius of Berzelius recognized the commonality of these two observations in connection with a few other isolated observations and in 1834 coined the term catalysis to describe such actions. Professor Leibig was one of the giants of the chemical world in 1840. In addition to his own work, Liebig was training the world's next generation of chemists in his laboratory in Giessen. This cadre of chemists were very impressed by the master teacher so that is it only natural that Liebig's views should dominate with this next generation of chemists. Leibig was, in the 1830s and 1840s, developing his mastery of agricultural chemistry. Neuware -The seminar on 'The application of NMR techniques on the body composition of live animals', was held on 14 - 15 lune, 1988 at the Bundesforschungsanstalt für Landwirtschaft (FAL), Institut für Tierzucht und Tierverhalten, Mariensee, Germany. This was the third in aseries of meetings organized in the framework of the European Communities (EC) programme for the coordination of agricultural research. The earlier meetings were on 'In vivo estimation of body composition', in 1981 in Denmark, and 'In vivo measurements of body composition in meat animals', in 1983 in the UK. The emphasis of the Mariensee meeting on the application of nuclear magnetic resonance techniques benefitted greatly from new equipment just installed at the Institute. Furthermore it was made clear that this type of large-scale facility, which is not readily found elsewhere, could be made available to promote international collaboration in animal science. After discussing the basic principles of the NMR technique and comparing it with alternative, non-destructive methods of body composition analyses, the programme of the Mariensee group was discussed. Their production cannot be halted and as steps are taken to maintain or improve the quality of rivers and lakes it grows in quanti ty. The Commission's early awareness of the need for action to prepare for substantial growth in the Community's' sludge disposal problem led to the setting up of the COST 68 project to coordinate and guide European research and development work with particular emphasis on recycling sludge to agricultural land. Two years ago the field of research activi ties was extended to liquid agricultural wastes. This Symposium is the latest opportunity to provide a comprehensive review of the results of the project, to define current trends in practice and to establish by discussion the priorities for research over the next few years. Low-grade minerals require low cost extraction and this in many cases necessitates very expensive mechanized equipment with the cost of individual units running into millions of pounds in the case of large scale operations with high productivity. There has been, and there still is, a tendency for the smaller single quarries to be amalgamated into groups with large financial resources and therefore with the ability to purchase these expensive machines so necessary to make operations viable. This in turn requires wider administrative and technical knowledge in executives of these groups and as these often handle a wide range of products from widely differing systems of working, this technical knowledge should embrace the exploitation of many different types of deposits. Several years have passed since the original Polish edition (and then 1 the Italian translation) of this book appeared. The fact that the principal ideas expressed in it have withstood, as I see it, the brunt of criticism, has led me to remain basically with the original text. Two main changes have, however, been introduced. First, I have added an Appendix containing the original version of a paper I presented at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin in June 1988 and a short postscript to that paper referring to comments made during two dis cussions at the Kolleg. Let me briefly explain the reason for this addition. In recent years the landscape for historical and philosophical in terpretation of the evolution of scientific knowledge has altered. The strongest of the new contenders for epistemological recognition are social constructivists, who analyze in detail how knowledge is produced within specific social settings, including the instruments and procedures of par ticular laboratories and the economic and political realities of particular scientific communities.
