Tableaux, figures, planches . 105 INTRODUCTION Dans son important travail sur Opilioacarus segmentatus With, Grandjean (1936) remarquait que la terminologie joue un role capital dans Ie develop pement des sciences, et que la rendre precise et uniforme dans la classe des Arachnides serait un tres grand progreso En novembre 1967, quand on parlait chez lui, a Geneve, de la possibilite d'organiser des reunions d'acaro logues de langue fran9aise, Grandjean lui. meme nous suggerait de profiter de ces contacts pour jeter les bases d'un glossaire de la terminologie acaro logique; un tel glossaire pourrait contribuer a l'usage et a la propagation d'une terminologie plus generale. La Societe des Acarologues de Langue Fran9aise (fondee en 1968) crea a cet effet une commission (dont j'etais Ie responsable), et la preparation de plusieurs parties de ce glossaire (la partie generale et la partie sur les Opilioacarides, entre autres) me furent confiees. Le present travail, complet en soi-meme, constitue une des parties de ce glossaire (suivant Ie projet general il y aura une partie generale et huit parties speciales, une pour chaque ordre des Acariens). 156 pp. Englisch.

In atomic spectroscopy, for example, where the principles required in a student text have been laid down for many years, there have been advances in optical pumping and double resonance which cannot be neglected at undergraduate level. In addition, nuclear quadrupole resonance (n.q.f.) and far infrared spectroscopy now merit separate chapters while addtional chapters dealing with Mbssbauer spectroscopy, photoelectron spectroscopy and group theory are an essential requisite for any modern spectroscopy textbook. When the idea for a new edition of Spectroscopy was first discussed it quickly became clear that the task of revision would be an impossible one for two authors working alone. Consequently it was decided that the new edition be planned and co-ordinated by two editors who were to invite specialists, each of whom had experience of presenting their subject at an undergraduate level, to contribute a new chapter or to revise extensively an existing chapter. In this manner a proper perspective of each topic has been provided without any sacri fice of the essential character and unity of the first edition. The expansion of subject matter has necessitated the division of the complete work into three self contained volumes. Besides the so-called traditional biological control of introduced aphids, there appears a situation which could perhaps be called a renaissance of biocontrol, i. e. the utilization of biotic agents against insecticide-resistant populations of aphid pests. The rapid increase in the amount of information as well as the necessity of syntheti- cal papers are the well-known features in today's entomology. This requirement is much more topical in the groups where brief summarized information is needed for research workers in applied branches. The author has been well aware of all these difficulties and requirements owing to his own experience both in basic and applied research. Several years ago he decided to summarize our knowledge on the aphid parasites of the world by elaborating synthetical studies on the particular zoogeographical areas.These papers have been intended to represent annotated reviews of the parasite fauna, distribution, biologies and utilization in aphid pest management, with keys to genera and species, hos- parasite catalogue, and a list of references added. Naturally, these studies are only relatively updated, with respect to a certain deadline from which the research may be further continued. DEUTMAN, M.D. From October 16-18, 197 5 many distinguished ophthalmologists visited Nijmegen to inaugurate the new Eye Institute of the University of Nijmegen with a symposium on New Developments in Ophthalmology. The meeting was held under the auspices of the Netherlandish Ophthalmological Society (NOG) and had a high attendance of over 300 ophthalmologists from The Netherlands and from abroad. Many new and some controversial surgical techniques regarding corneal transplantation, phako-emulsification, intra-ocular lensimplantation, local excision of melanomas of the choroid and ciliary body, pars plana vitrec tomy, laser treatment in disciform macular degeneration and treatment of giant retinal tears were discussed. Since new surgical techniques have to be based on profound knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the eye, many new basic and important data regarding the cornea, the vitreous body, the retinal vessels, the choroid and the orbit were presented by some of the foremost authorities. Technical advances in corneal transplantation were discussed, while the modern treatment of corneal ulcers and bacterial infections of the eye was presented. New findings such as computerized tomography, facilitate the diagnosis of underlying disease in exophthalmus enormously. The treatment of retinal detachment has improved considerably over the last ten years and we feel that in particular the safe non-drainage methods deserve attention. Cryo coagulation and photocoagulation have certain advances over diathermy and the radial placement of indenting suprascleral material may have consider able advantages over the limbus-parallel placement in horseshoe tears. 376 pp. Englisch.

Letters from fellow workers suggested that now might be an appropriate time, and that a symposium should be held in Lunz. Today it is clear that large congresses are losing their value because of the difficulty of attending all relevant lectures and of finding colleagues. In consequence, small symposia for specialist groups are becoming increasingly important. As I felt that the success of such a symposium must depend on the suggestions from its potential members, I sent out in April 1973, together with a first circular, a questionnaire, asking for opinions on time and length of the symposium, numbers of participants, types of communication, interests within Trichopterology, and lan guages which should be used. The majority of answers suggested the following: The number of participants should be between 20 and 50, and the duration, excluding excursions, should be three to five days; main interests were in ecology and systematics, but there were also interests in physiology, behaviour, zoogeography, morphology, cytotaxonomy and evolution. There was a clear preference for local excursions. Languages should be English, French and German, with a preference for English. The symposium should consist of both formal papers and informal progress reports, with adequate time for discussion. The arrangements have therefore been based on these results. 228 pp. Englisch.

Firstly, the present approach is in no way prescriptive or normative, as the interest centres on explication rather than an evaluative assess ment of this, that or another type of arrangement, or act. 1 It will be clear that I am in complete disagreement with Gewirth when he claims that 'The central concern of political philosophy is the moral evaluation of political power. ' It seems obvious that the under standing of political and social forms of life, and a fortiori of political power, must come before its evaluation. This cannot be provided by moral assessment alone. Thus an analytical or explicative approach which promotes such understanding must come first, and must be the 'central concern' of the appropriate philosophical discipline. This is not to say that moral assessment is illegitimate, nor even that it cannot be one of the concerns of political philosophy, but it is to deny that it can be central, even though it might be somebody's central interest. To the extent to which this book is successful it will provide an argu mentin my favour - if the job can be done, obviously it is of primary importance. It may therefore be expected that this entire review would solely deal with superconductivity at high temperatures, i.e. above the boiling point of hydrogen. Any unexpected occurrence of superconductivity is, however, a challenge to scientists interested either in the physics of this phenomenon or in its materials science aspects. In this respect, the eighties have been quite revolutionary in the sense that, on various occasions, superconductivity was discovered in materials whose physical properties were not obviously favourable for adopting this ground state. Therefore, apart from emphasizing the topic of oxide superconductors, this collection of reprints also contains a selection of papers that deal with other subjects, such as coexistence of magnetic order and superconductivity, heavy electron and organic superconductors. This is all the more justified when we consider the fact that various aspects of superconductivity in high Tc oxide compounds are, or might be, connected with features that are also observed in these other materials.
