Power-Constrained Testing of VLSI Circuits focuses on techniques for minimizing power dissipation during test application at logic and register-transfer levels of abstraction of the VLSI design flow. The first part of this book surveys the existing techniques for power constrained testing of VLSI circuits. However, the study of compact spaces leads naturally to non-compact spaces and infinitely generated chain complexes; a classical example is the th…eory of covering spaces. In handling non-compact spaces we must take into account the infinity behaviour of such spaces. This necessitates modifying the usual topological and algebraic cate gories to obtain 'proper' categories in which objects are equipped with a 'topologized infinity' and in which morphisms are compatible with the topology at infinity. The origins of proper (topological) category theory go back to 1923, when Kere kjart6 [VT] established the classification of non-compact surfaces by adding to orien tability and genus a new invariant, consisting of a set of 'ideal points' at infinity. Later, Freudenthal [ETR] gave a rigorous treatment of the topology of 'ideal points' by introducing the space of 'ends' of a non-compact space. In spite of its early ap pearance, proper category theory was not recognized as a distinct area of topology until the late 1960's with the work of Siebenmann [OFB], [IS], [DES] on non-compact manifolds. 308 pp. Englisch.

The subject of galactic chemical evolution was started and developed… by Beat rice Tinsley in the seventies and now is a flourishing subject. This book is dedi cated to the chemical evolution of our Galaxy and aims at giving an up-to-date review of what we have learned since Tinsley's pioneering efforts. At the time of writing, in fact, books of this kind were not available with the exception of the excellent book by Bernard Pagel on 'Nucleosynthesis and Chemical Evolution of Galaxies' (Cambridge University Press, 1997), and the subject of galactic chem ical evolution has appeared only as short chapters in books devoted to other subjects. Therefore, I felt that a book of this kind could be useful. The book summarizes the observational facts which allow us to reconstruct the chemical history of our Galaxy, in particular the abundances in stars and in terstellar medium; in the last decade, a great deal of observational work, mostly abundance determinations in stars in the solar vicinity, has shed light on the pro duction and distribution of chemical elements. Even more recently more abun dance data have accumulated for external galaxies at both low and high redshift, thus providing precious information on the chemical evolution of different types of galaxies and on the early stages of galaxy evolution. 300 pp. Englisch.

The first period started at the 'Earth Summit' of Rio de Janeiro in 1992, where the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) was opened for signature. The UNFCCC was subsequently signed and ratified by 174 countries, making it one of the most accepted international rd treaties ever. The second period was initiated at the 3 Conference of the Parties (COP3) to the UNFCCC in Kyoto in 1997, which produced the Kyoto Protocol (KP). Till now, eighty-four countries have signed the Kyoto Protocol, but only twelve ratified it. A major reason for this slow ratification is that most operational details of the Kyoto Protocol were not decided in Kyoto but deferred to following conferences. This deferral of the details, while probably appropriate to initially reach an agreement, is a major stepping stone for a speedy ratification of the protocol. National policy makers and their constituencies, who would ultimately bear the cost of Kyoto, are generally not prepared to ratify a treaty that could mean anything, from an unsustainable strict regime of international control of greenhouse gases (GHGs) to an 'L-regime' ofloopholes, or from a pure market-based international carbon trading to a regime of huge international carbon tax funds. 160 pp. Englisch.
