A similar role in differential algebra is played by the differential dimension polynomials. The notion of differential dimension polynomial was introduced by E. Kolchin in 1964 [KoI64]' but the problems and ideas that had led to this notion (and that are reflected in this book) have essentially more long history. The oral presentations and discussions over three days covered a wide range of topics, and provided the international audience with a perspective on scientific efforts underway around the world. The conference participants were able to attend two separate field trips: (I) a pre-conference trip guided by Professor Robert Hatcher of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, examined the Basement rocks in the North Carolina -Tennessee region of the Appalachian Mountains, and (2) a mid-conference field trip guided by A.K. Sinha, convener of the conference, allowed participants to examine the complex rock associations and structures of the 1000 m.y. old basement rocks in Virginia. Although only 20% of all cultivated land in the world is under irrigation, it provides 35-40% of all crop production. Because of higher yields under irrigated agriculture, investments for irrigation are usually a top priority. However, it has become a matter of serious concern in recent years that, despite their high co~ts, the performance of many irrigation projects has fallen short of expectations as a result of inadequate water management at both farm and system levels. Crop production increase has been well below the project targets. The greatest potential for increasing food and other agricultural products is the more efficient use of naturally occurring precipitation in conjunction with improved soil fertility management. Until recently, regardless of the amounts and distribution of rainfall, irrigation practices were used almost exclusively to supplement the amount of soil water stored in the root zone to such an extent that the available soil water never allowed the crop to suffer from water stress throughout the growing season. The oral presentations and discussions over three days covered a wide range of topics, and provided the international audience with a perspective on scientific efforts underway around the world. The conference participants were able to attend two separate field trips: (I) a pre-conference trip guided by Professor Robert Hatcher of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, examined the Basement rocks in the North Carolina -Tennessee region of the Appalachian Mountains, and (2) a mid-conference field trip guided by A.K. Sinha, convener of the conference, allowed participants to examine the complex rock associations and structures of the> 1000 m.y. old basement rocks in Virginia. Both the field trip guid Elektronisches Buch and abstract volumes were published for the conference. The meeting brought together scientists from more than 14 countries.
