The course in Turku was orga…nized by Professor Mats Gyllenberg's groupl and was also included 2 within the postgraduate program ComBi , a Graduate School in Compu tational Biology, Bioinformatics, and Biometry, directed by Professor Esko Ukkonen at the University of Helsinki. The purpose of the courses was to give a thorough and systematic intro duc ti on to probabilistic modelling in bioinformatics for advanced undergraduate and graduate students who had a fairly limited background in prob ability theory, but were otherwise well trained in mathematics and were already familiar with at least some of the techniques of algorithmic sequence analysis. Portions of the material have also been lectured at shorter graduate courses and seminars both in Finland and in Sweden. The initial set of notes circulated also for a time outside those two countries via the World Wide Web. The intermediate course in probability theory and techniques of discrete mathematics held by the author at the University College of Södertörn (Hud dinge, Sweden) during the academic year 1997-1998 has also influenced the presentation. In this book, we appropriate their conception of research-technology, and ex tend it to many other phenomena which are less stable and less localized in time and space than the Zeeman/Cotton situation. In the following pages…, we use the concept for instances where research activities are orientated primarily toward technologies which facilitate both the production of scientific knowledge and the production of other goods. In particular, we use the tenn for instances where instruments and meth ods traverse numerous geographic and institutional boundaries; that is, fields dis tinctly different and distant from the instruments' and methods' initial focus. We suggest that instruments such as the ultra-centrifuge, and the trajectories of the men who devise such artefacts, diverge in an interesting way from other fonns of artefacts and careers in science, metrology and engineering with which students of science and technology are more familiar. The instrument systems developed by re search-technologists strike us as especially general, open-ended, and flexible. When tailored effectively, research-technology instruments potentially fit into many niches and serve a host of unrelated applications. Their multi-functional character distin guishes them from many other devices which are designed to address specific, nar rowly defined problems in a circumscribed arena in and outside of science. Research technology activities link universities, industry, public and private research or me trology establishments, instrument-making finns, consulting companies, the military, and metrological agencies. Thus, a realistic model of forest development includes both natural growth and thinnings. The key to successful timber management is a proper understanding of growth processes, and one of the objectives of modelling forest development is to provide the tools that enable foresters to compare alternative silvicultural treatments. Foresters need to be able to anticipate the consequences of a particular thinning operation. In most cases, total timber volume is not a very appropriate measure for quantifying growth or yields, or changes caused by thinning operations. Yield in economic terms is defined by the dimensions and quality attributes of the harvestable logs, and estimating timber products is a central issue of production-oriented growth and yield research. A new attitude to applied logic has evolved, where researchers tailor a logic for their own use in the same way they define a computer language, and where auto mated deduction for the logic and its fragments is as important as the logic itself. In such a climate there is a need to emphasise algorithmic logic methodologies alongside any individual logics. Thus the tableaux method or the resolution method are as central to todays discipline of logic as classical logic or intuitionistic logic are. From this point of view, J. Goubault and I. Mackie's book on Proof Theory and Automated Deduction is most welcome. It covers major algorithmic methodolo gies as well as a variety of logical systems. All of these frameworks are couched in the tradition of Montague Grammar, even though they extend the classical formalism in different directions. The developments emerged from the modern discussion of problems for the representation of cross-sentential anaphoric relations involving pronouns, and the interpretation of definite and indefinite noun phrases. After a decade of controversy, these approaches are merging together, enriching each other's formal mechanisms rather than expressing opposition. Thus, the articles in this volume concentrate on fundamental semantic questions, and also extend the current formalisms in order to capture more data.
