It is not specifically concerned with human factors with safety analysis as such, although some of the techniques discusse…d are adaptable to these purposes. A machine or an electronic circuit exemplifies a system. Each machine or circuit may also be treated as an item in a larger system. However, this does not reduce it suddenly to basic component status; it remains complex and can only be treated as unitary under definable restrictions. In particular, the effects of maintenance and component renewal must be considered most carefully. Previous books on system reliability have concentrated on one or two only of the six principal techniques available to the analyst. These are: 1. probability theory; 2. distributional statistics; 3. markov methods (matrix algebra); 4. fault and event trees (Boolean logic); 5. theory of renewal processes; 6. directional graph theory (di-graphs). This book relates these methods to one another and to their applications. The authors feel that previous books which concentrated upon one tech nique and the contortions necessary to use it in every possible situation may have misled readers into believing that there were no other methods and that some real problems were intractable or more difficult to solve than need be. For example, several results which are proved in other books for items with exponentially distributed times to/between failures are shown to be independent of distribution. 288 pp. Englisch.

These shallow seas play an important role as the high energy boundary zon…es of the deep ocean where much of the ocean's tidal and wave energies are dissipated. They are highly productive biologically and are responsible for most of the world's fishery production. In many cases, they are also sources of economically important resources, notably hydrocarbons and they are frequently important as thorough fares for merchant shipping. Because they are the regions of the ocean closest to our centres of population and industrial activity, they have been the first to feel the impact of the increasing pressures imposed by large scale waste disposal into the ocean. The North Sea is an archetypal representative of such seas: we need to be able to understand its processes and predict them if we are to achieve a degree of rational management in the future, as the environmental threats increase. The understanding required extends through a wide range of processes that operate in the shelf seas from the fundamental physics to the chemistry and biology of the water column and the seabed sediments. These processes, and the interactions between them, cut across the traditional discipline boundaries within marine science and require a substantial inter disciplinary effort for their effective study. 256 pp. Englisch.

Since the…1990, in Ulyanovsk, when the Russian Academy of Sciences promoted the first Workshop of the series, the basic idea was to have a sort of Institutional Meeting collecting Scientists of the Magnetics Community devoted to Spin Wave Electronics at Microwave Frequencies. It was a succesful organization, and the birth of an effective interaction between eastern and western researchers overcame the meaning of the Workshop itself. Three years later, in Irvine, California, 1993, the Spin Wave Community was joined again. It was clear that the growing interest on hot topics of Nonlinear Microwave Magnetics involving both, applicative and fundamental aspects of microwave magnetic media, favoured the organization of further meetings on the same subject. So far, during the social dinner, in the middle between a serious proposal and the joke encouraged by the Californian Wine, Roma was proposed as the third place for the Workshop. A list of these sessions and their chairpersons is attached below. The Workshop was devoted to the technical aspects of advanced interconnections and microassembly, but also included papers on the education issues required to prepare students to work in these areas. In addition to new technical developments, several papers presented overviews predicting the future directions of these technologies. The basic issue is that electronic systems will continue to be miniaturized and at the same time performance must continue to improve. Various industry roadmaps were discussed as well as new smaller packaging and interconnection concepts. The newest chip packages are often based on the selection of an appropriate interconnection method. An example is the chip-scale package, which has horizontal (x-y) dimensions,;; 20% larger than the actual silicon chip itself. Without public interest and participation, successful implementation of IWRM plans for river basin cannot be possible. Further to this, management at the watershed level to assure water supplies to support livelihood (i.e. domestic water, irrigation, industries, etc.) and sustainable groundwater development requires water augmentation through water conservation structures, and pollution control will also play a vital role. In India, because of limited period of rainfall during Monsoon (i.e. three to four months), water conservation and rainwater harvesting have been practiced since ancient days in order to meet water demands throughout the year. These structures are generally constructed and operated through the public participation. Keeping in view of the importance of public partnership, the role of public partnership in context of water-related awareness and practices has been investigated in different parts of the Yamuna River basin. The investigation evaluates the impact of various water conservation devices on livelihood; compares the performance of recently developed water conservation structures with ancient structures; examines spatial variation of water-related problems in the basin; and proposes an institutional setup for effective governance. 168 pp. Englisch.

The underly ing theme is the extension to several complex variables of geometric aspects of the classical theor…y of univalent functions. Because the author's introduction provides an excellent overview of the content of the book, I will not duplicate the effort here. Rather, I will place the book into historical context. The theory of univalent functions long has been an important part of the study of holomorphic functions of one complex variable. The roots of the subject go back to the famous Riemann Mapping Theorem which asserts that a simply connected region n which is a proper subset of the complex plane C is biholomorphically equivalent to the open unit disk ~. That is, there is a univalent function (holo morphic bijection) I : ~ -+ n. In the early part of this century work began to focus on the class S of normalized (f (0) = 0 and I' (0) = 1) univalent functions defined on the unit disk. The restriction to uni valent functions defined on the unit disk is justified by the Riemann Mapping Theorem. The subject contains many beautiful results that were obtained by fundamental techniques developed by many mathe maticians, including Koebe, Bieberbach, Loewner, Goluzin, Grunsky, and Schiffer. The best-known aspect of univalent function theory is the so-called Bieberbach conjecture which was proved by de Branges in 1984. 228 pp. Englisch.

This book addresses the immunologically mediated neuromuscular diseases, including Guillain-Barre syndrome and ot…her autoimmune neuropathies, the Lambert-Eaton myas thenic syndrome, myasthenia gravis, and the autoimmune diseases of muscle. Two chapters are devoted to the vasculitis and human immunodeficiency virus-mediated neuromuscular diseases. The experimental models of neuritis and myasthenia gravis are addressed in separate chapters. An introductory chapter provides a general background to autoimmunity. The medical activity is prognosis from the Greek pro (forward) and gnosis (special knowledgeL thus foreknowledge, and the practitioner is… the prognosticator, a sobriquet which falls unhappily upon the ear. Like it or not, there is nothing more critical in the management of chronic rheumatic conditions than a reasonably clear picture of what time and disease will bring. The knowledge is so much a part of ordinary medical thinking that we rarely grace it with the label prognosis. But, like so much of 'ordinary medical thinking' (an oxymoron, perhaps), quantitative data are very thin and the chestnuts of personal observation and authority figure assertion loom large. Unlike several books I have seen or written, this one on prognosis needs no justification. The entirety of a person's life contributes to and confounds what the future holds. The ingredients include education levet income, support structures such as family, housing, occupation, availability of medical services, diagnosis, treatment, rate of disease progression, age, gender, race, marital status, and others too numerous to mention or too arcane to be recognized. One would think the task of estimating prognosis impossible. And yet there is light on the horizon -we do know a few things such as the effect of high rheumatoid factor titers on the prognosis of RA or the likely outcome of certain kidney lesions in SLE. 520 pp. Englisch.

It has been written with the enc…ouragement of my students and colleagues, who felt that an extensive card file I had accumulated over the years of teaching solid state and semiconductor physics would be helpful to more than just a few of us. This file, updated from time to time, contained lecture notes and other entries that were useful in my research and permitted me to give to my students a broader spectrum of information than is available in typical textbooks. When assembling this material into a book, I divided the top ics into material dealing with the homogeneous semiconductor, the subject of the previously published Volume 1, and the inhomoge neous semiconductor, the subject of this Volume 2. In order to keep the book to a manageable size, sections of tutorial character which can be used as text for a graduate level class had to be interwoven with others written in shorter, reference style. The programme aimed to cover as many aspects of circumstellar matter as could fit into a one-week meeting, omitting only planetary nebulae, which had been well served by meetings in the previous two years. The Invited Reviews and oral contributions are included in the order and sections in which they were presented, even where re-ordering might have been more logical. HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE This book has been published at the close of the twentieth century when the medical profession and the general community are increasingly concerned about the threat of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDRTB)[1. 2]. However, at this epoch, it is enlightening to move back from our immediate concerns about MDRTB 'hot spots' in Asia, South America, and the former Soviet Union [3], and to place our current predicament in an historical context. If the results of the global survey of antituberculosis drug resistance conducted by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the International Union against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (IUATLD) can be extrapolated, only 2. 2% of TB cases worldwide are due to multi drug resistant strains [3].
