The underly ing theme is the extension to several complex variables of geometric aspects of the classical theory of univalent functions. Because the author's introduction provides an excellent overview of the content of the book, I will not duplicate the effort here. Rather, I will place the book into historical context. The theory of univalent functions long has been an important part of the study of holomorphic functions of one complex variable. The roots of the subject go back to the famous Riemann Mapping Theorem which asserts that a simply connected region n which is a proper subset of the complex plane C is biholomorphically equivalent to the open unit disk ~. That is, there is a univalent function (holo morphic bijection) I : ~ -+ n. In the early part of this century work began to focus on the class S of normalized (f (0) = 0 and I' (0) = 1) univalent functions defined on the unit disk. The restriction to uni valent functions defined on the unit disk is justified by the Riemann Mapping Theorem. The subject contains many beautiful results that were obtained by fundamental techniques developed by many mathe maticians, including Koebe, Bieberbach, Loewner, Goluzin, Grunsky, and Schiffer. Like it or not, there is nothing more critical in the management of chronic rheumatic conditions than a reasonably clear picture of what time and disease will bring. The knowledge is so much a part of ordinary medical thinking that we rarely grace it with the label prognosis. But, like so much of 'ordinary medical thinking' (an oxymoron, perhaps), quantitative data are very thin and the chestnuts of personal observation and authority figure assertion loom large. This book is no exception. It has been written with the encouragement of my students and colleagues, who felt that an extensive card file I had accumulated over the years of teaching solid state and semiconductor physics would be helpful to more than just a few of us. This file, updated from time to time, contained lecture notes and other entries that were useful in my research and permitted me to give to my students a broader spectrum of information than is available in typical textbooks. When assembling this material into a book, I divided the top ics into material dealing with the homogeneous semiconductor, the subject of the previously published Volume 1, and the inhomoge neous semiconductor, the subject of this Volume 2. In order to keep the book to a manageable size, sections of tutorial character which can be used as text for a graduate level class had to be interwoven with others written in shorter, reference style. Circumstellar Matter was selected as the topic because of important contributions toward research in the field by recent observations in the infrared and submillimetre, particularly with the two telescopes which the Observatory has both operated and built instru mentation for - the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) and the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). The programme aimed to cover as many aspects of circumstellar matter as could fit into a one-week meeting, omitting only planetary nebulae, which had been well served by meetings in the previous two years.
