Nitrogen (N) is the nutrient that most frequently limits rice production. At current levels o…fN use efficiency, we will require at least double the 10 million tons of N fertilizer that are currently used each year for rice production. Global agriculture now relies heavily on N fertilizers derived from petroleUIll, which, in turn, is vulnerable to political and economic fluctuations in the oil markets. N fertilizers, therefore, are expensive inputs, costing agriculture more than US$45 billion annually. Rice suffers from a mismatch of its N demand and N supplied as fertilizer, resulting in a 50-70% loss of applied N fertilizer. Two basic approaches may be used to solve this problem One is to regulate the timing ofN application based on needs of the plants, thus partly increasing the efficiency of the plants' use of applied N. The other is to increase the ability of the rice system to fix its own N. The latter approach is a long-term strategy, but it would have enormous environmental benefits while helping resource-poor farmers. Furthermore, farmers more easily adopt a genotype or variety with useful traits than they do crop and soil management practices that may be associated with additional costs. 228 pp. Englisch.

The announced title of the lecture course was 'Main parts of the phenome nology and critique of reason.' The course began with five, relatively inde pendent, introductory lectures. These were published on their own in 1947, bearing the title The idea ojphenomenology.l The 'Five Lectures' comprise a general orientation by proposing the method to be employed in the subsequent working out of the actual problems (viz., the method of 'phenomenological reduction') and by clarifying, at least provisionally, some technical terms that will be used in the labor the subsequent lectures will carry out. The present volume, then, presents that labor, i.e., the method in action and the results attained. Its most familiar expression is found in the Meditations (1641) and in Part I of The Principles 0/ Philosophy (1644).… However neither of these books provided a detailed discussion of dualism. The Meditations was primarily concerned with finding a foundation for reliable human knowledge, while the Principles attempted to provide an alternative metaphysical framework, in contrast with scholastic philosophy, within which natural philosophy or a scien tific explanation of natural phenomena could be developed. Thus neither book ex plicitly presents a Cartesian theory of the mind nor does either give a detailed account of how, if dualism were accepted, mind and body would interact. The task of articulating such a theory was left to two further works, only one of which was completed by Descartes, viz. the Treatise on Man (published posthumously in 1664). The Treatise began with the following sentence, describing the hypothetical human beings who were to be explained in that work: 'These human beings will be com posed, as we are, of a soul and a body; and, first of all, I must describe the body for you separately; then, also separately, the soul; and fmally I must show you how these two natures would have to be joined and united to constitute human beings resembling us. 276 pp. Englisch.

However, studies of the different judicial and public policy laws in the different European Union member countries lead one to refine this first impression. The family does not have the same legal meaning in all places, and the ways in which it is defined by law and public policy continue to differ strongly, due in particular to historical factors, cultural traditions, and conceptions of the role of the State. In order for the family to be part of the construction of a European citizenship, the pluralistic nature of its political definitions will have to be recognized. Putting the family into the context of evolving European integration has never been done before. In the pursuit of this inquiry, I fIrSt establish some stylized facts that I wish to investigate. The three countries discussed here-the United Kingdom, the United States, and Japan-are observed over a period of twenty-two years beginning in 1970, which covers at least three business cycles. This study makes several assumptions. First, there is no common feature on whether labor share moves countercyclically or procyclically; however, labor share increases in the fIrst year of contraction and decreases in the fIrst year of expansion, though there are some exceptions. Second, the profIt rate moves pro cyclically . Third, labor productivity moves pro cyclically and shows a symmetrical change; productivity sharply increases in the fIrSt year of expansion in terms of the growth rate and decreases in the fIrst year of con traction. Fourth, the real wage rate has no common feature. Finally, labor shares with and without 'labor income of self-employment' imputed from self-employment income are almost parallel (except for Japan), and their move ments are also similar, though they move differently for some years. To explain these facts, I examine three types of model (or theory)-Kaldorian theory, real-business-cycle theory, and new Keynesian theory-but the focus is on Kaldor's approach-hence, the book's subtitle, A Kaldorian Analysis. 188 pp. Englisch.

Figure la gives the geographical map of Italy; with a box embracing the region of Gargano; de…tails of that region are in turn sketched in Figure lb. Because of the incompleteness of the earthquake and tsunami catalogues, no reports on tsunamis in this area are available prior to 1600 AD. The Gargano events have been recently revised in order to establish their reliability and to attain the phenomenological reconstruction of the tsunamis (Guidoboni and Tinti, 1987 and 1988; Tinti et. al. , 1995). This work fits the general purpose of assessing tsunami hazard along the Italian coasts and represents a continuation of a previous study, where the first quantitative description of the 1627 tsunami from a numerical modeling viewpoint was performed (Tinti and Piatanesi, 1996). The earthquake took place on 30 July 1627 about mid-day and was followed by four large aftershocks. It claimed more than 5,000 victims and destroyed completely numerous villages in the northern Gargano area, with the most severe damage located between S. Severo and Lesina. The earthquake excited a tsunami with the most impressive effects in proximity of the Lesina Lake where the most reliable contemporary chronicles report about an initial sea water withdrawal of about 2 miles and a subsequent penetration inland. 228 pp. Englisch.

The appendices to this volume contain texts from both Hussed and Heidegger, and date from 1929 through 1931. As a whole these materials not only document Hussed's thinking as he approached retirement and emeri tus status (March 31, 1928) but also shed light on the philosophical chasm that was widening at that time between Hussed and his then colleague and protege, Martin Heidegger. 1. The Encyclopaedia Britannica Article Between September and early December 1927, Hussed, under contract, composed an introduction to phenomenology that was to be published in the fourteenth edition ofthe Encyclopaedia Britannica (1929). Whether this response was idiosyncratic or not, I do not know; I expect not. Part of thi…s type of reaction can no doubt be explained by the fact that Coase has often been characterized as an economist who wrote only two significant or influential papers: 'The Nature of the Firm' (1937) and 'The Problem of Social Cost' (1960). And by typical professional standards of 'significant' and 'influential' (i. e. , widely read and cited), this perception embodies a great deal of truth, even subsequent to Coase's receipt of the Prize. Since then use of the 21-cm line has greatly improved our knowledge in many fields and has been used fo…r galactic structure studies, studies of the interstellar medium (ISM) in the Milky Way and other galaxies, studies of the mass distribution of the Milky Way and other galaxies, studies of spiral struc ture, studies of high velocity gas in the Milky Way and other galaxies, for measuring distances using the Tully-Fisher relation etc. Regarding studies of the ISM, there have been a number of instrumen tal developments over the past decade: large CCD's became available on optical telescopes, radio synthesis offered sensitive imaging capabilities, not only in the classical 21-cm HI line but also in the mm-transitions of CO and other molecules, and X-ray imaging capabilities became available to measure the hot component of the ISM. These developments meant that Milky Way was no longer the exclusive playground for ISM studies and that by reaching out to other galaxies astronomy had gained the advantage of having an 'outside' view, though at the expense of giving up some linear resolution. Studies of the ISM in other galaxies are intimately connected to studies of the ISM in the Milky Way. 226 pp. Englisch.

Such functors haveimportant applications in algebra, algebraic topology, functional analysis, algebraic geometry and other principal areas of mathematics. To study homological properties of non-additive functors it is necessary to define and investigate their derived functors and satellites. It will be the aim of this book based on the results of researchers of A. Razmadze Mathematical Institute of the Georgian Academy of Sciences devoted to non-abelian homological algebra. The most important considered cases will be functors from arbitrary categories to the category of modules, group valued functors and commutative semigroup valued functors. In Chapter I universal sequences of functors are defined and in vestigated with respect to (co)presheaves of categories, extending in a natural way the satellites of additive functors to the non-additive case and generalizing the classical relative homological algebra in additive categories to arbitrary categories. Applications are given in the furth coming chapters. Chapter II is devoted to the non-abelian derived functors of group valued functors with respect to projective classes using projective pseu dosimplicial resolutions. Their functorial properties (exactness, Milnor exact sequence, relationship with cotriple derived functors, satellites and Grothendieck cohomology, spectral sequence of an epimorphism, degree of an arbitrary functor) are established and applications to ho mology and cohomology of groups are given. 276 pp. Englisch.
