Neuware -The present monograph is devoted to the theory of the solvability in generalized functions of general boundary value problems of mathematieal physies. It is the eontinuation of the author's book [Rl], where elliptic boundary value problems have been studied in eomplete seales of spaees of generalized funetions. From the early sixties, in the works of Lions and Magenes [LiM] and Yu. Berezanskii, S. Krein and Va. Roitberg [BKR] the theorems on eomplete eolleetion of isomorphisms have been established. These theorems, roughly speaking, mean that the operator generated by an elliptie boundary value problem establishes an isomorphism between spaees of functions which 'have s derivatives' and spaees functions whieh 'have s - r derivatives' (here s is an arbitrary real number, r is the order of the elliptic problem). The dose results were also obtained by Seheehter [Sehe]. These results and some of their applieations are eontained in the book of Lions and Magenes [LiM2] (see also the survey of Magenes [MagD and Yu. Berezanskii [Ber]. Further progress in the theory under eonsideration was eonneeted, first, with the completion of the dass of elliptie problems for whieh the theorems on eomplete eolleetion of isomorphisms hold, and, henee, with the development of new methods of proving of these theorems, and, second, with the inerease of a number of applieations of the isomorphism theorems. At a stroke, it seems to be possible to synthesise more molecules in a month than have previously been made in the whole of the distinguished history of organic chemistry, Furthermore, all the molecules can be screened in the same short period. However, like any weapons of immense power, these techniques must be used with care, to achieve maximum impact. The costs of implementing and running high-throughput screening and combinatorial chemistry are high, as large dedicated facilities must be built and staffed. In addition, the sheer number of chemical leads generated may overwhelm the lead optimisation teams in a hail of friendly fire. Mother nature has not entirely surrendered, as the number of building blocks that could be used to build libraries would require more atoms than there are in the universe. In addition, the progress made by the Human Genome Project has uncovered many proteins with different functions but related binding sites, creating issues of selectivity. Advances in the new field of pharmacogenomics will produce more of these challenges. There is a real need to make hi- throughput screening and combinatorial chemistry into 'smart' weapons, so that their power is not dissipated. Although a common basis on the physiopathology of surgical trauma and post operative complications persists, as a result of general knowledge of surgical diseases, there is no doubt that in the spheres of doctrine and application, both research and clinical medicine have distinguished themselves autonomously in many surgical fields (orthopedics, neurosurgery, cardiovascular surgery, thoracic surgery, urology, etc.). It is therefore difficult to define the present configuration ofgeneral surgery, but without question abdominal surgery occupies a position of pre-eminent importance within the general framework. We are dealing, in fact, with pathological pictures which occur in a section ofthe body ofvast proportions, in which structures, organs, and morphologically complex spaces are arranged to carry out important functions. They are, therefore, subject to considerably complex pathological alterations, such as to establish an interesting field of diagnostic discussion and an exciting training-ground for surgical activity. It can be affirmed that the diagnosis and cures ofabdominal surgical diseases constitute a test ofthe surgeon's experience. Diagnosis is often entrusted to a differential process, the results ofwhich may be confirmed today by complementary diagnostics. The book originates from a sense of the tremendous need for quantitative indicators for assessing trends and perfonnance in the post-socialist economies. S&T systems in the region have passed through the first phase of rapid deterioration, or as it is called by some analysts 'implosion'. After ten years of transfonnation we are witnessing a process of increasing differentiation of these countries in tenns of general patterns of growth and structural change, as well as specific lines of restructuring in their S&T systems. The question of sources of growth - or indeed of stagnation - is an increasingly urgent one, from both the policy and academic perspectives. In that context there is a pressing need for in-depth assessment of restructuring patterns in science, technology and industry in the region, as a basis for understanding how restructuring in S&T is linked to industrial restructuring, and to general economic and social transfonnation.
