The introductory Chapter (Part I) evaluates the use of economic modelling to address policy questions, and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of applied general equilibrium models. First, the states of the proce…ss are not directly observable but become gradually known with the sequential acquisition of fallible information over time. Second, the mechanism that generates the fallible information is not stationary; rather, it is subjected to a sudden and irrevocable change. Thirdly, in complete, probabilistic information about the time of change is available when the process commences. The purpose of the book is to characterize this class of detection of change processes, to derive the optimal policy that minimizes total expected loss, and, most importantly, to develop testable response models, based on simple decision rules, for describing detection of change behavior. The book is theoretical in the sense that it offers mathematical models of multi-stage decision behavior and solutions to optimization problems. However, it is not anti-empirical, as it aims to stimulate new experimental research and to generate applications. Throughout the book, questions of experimental verification are briefly considered, and existing data from two studies are brought to bear on the validity of the models. The work is not complete; it only provides a starting point for investigating how people detect a change in an uncertain environment, balancing between the cost of delay in detecting the change and the cost of making an incor rect terminal decision. 212 pp. Englisch.

The previous thirteen volumes covered the years 1935-81; the majority of references in the present volume pertain to structure analyses reported in the literature during 1981 and 1982. A few structures reported prior to 1981 and omitted in earlier volumes are also included. Volume 14 contains 4094 references to 4001 distinct chemical compounds with 2162 cross-references. Some 90% of these references were obtained by direct in-house scanning of 51 major journals; the remaining material was located by searching Chemical Abstracts and Bulletin Signa/etique. The table below summarizes the cut-off dates for the 25 direct-scan journals yielding most entries in Volume 14. The fully classified Chemical Diagram Index, first presented in Volume 13, is continued here. Volume 14 contains 3912 chemical structural diagrams, repre senting 98% of the compounds. The reasons for the omission of some diagrams are noted in the Introduction. This new index provides a rapid visual overview of compounds studied in 1981-82 and will, we hope, add greatly to the usefulness of the annual Bibliographies. Two areas are common: supercritical fluid chroma tography and…supercritical fluid extraction. Both seek to exploit the unique properties of a gas at temperatures and pressures above the critical point. The most common supercritical fluid is carbon dioxide, employed because of its low critical temperature (31 °C), inertness, purity, non-toxicity and cheapness. Alternative supercritical fluids are also used and often in conjunction with modifiers. The combined gas-like mass transfer and liquid-like solvating characteristics have been used for improved chroma tographic separation and faster sample preparation. Supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) is complementary to gas chro matography ( GC) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), providing higher efficiency than HPLC, together with the ability to analyse thermally labile and high molecular weight analytes. Both packed and open tubular columns can be employed, providing the capability to analyse a wide range of sample types. We welcome the increasing urgency for sound scientific monitoring methods and data by efforts to protect and improve the environment. In an era of declining budgets, it is crucial that monitoring programs at all levels of government coordinate and share environmental data. Advanced Study Institute on the 'Theory and Applications of Differential Games' held at the University of Warwick, Coventry, England, from 27th August to 6th September, 1974. The main contributions during the first week consisted of a survey of two person zero sum differential games by L. D. Berkovitz and four integrated lectures by R. J. Elliott and N. J. Kalton, who have made important contributions to the concept of 'value' of a differential game. Applications were featured during the second week and included tactical air games, pursuit and evasion problems, as well as computational aspects. This very successful event gathered experts from a variety of technical and theoretical domains in which control plays tradi tionally an essential role and was meant to present the new idea of structural control to a broad audience, thus triggering interest and commitment as well as cross-fertilization. However, the peculiarities of structural control were already sumciently well pointed out and stressed by those participants of the symposium who had devoted themselves earlier to this specwc topic for some time. The result of presentations and discussions are collected in a set of Proceedings entitled 'Structural Control', published by North - Holland Publishing Company and the Solid Mechanics Division (SMD) of the University of Waterloo. The stimulation following this fIrst symposium was quite noticeable in the literature and led to the conviction of many researchers that after a reasonable period of time, a second meeting should be held to collect the fruits produced by the intermediate efforts of those working with increased emphasis on structural control. The invitations of the scientific committee brought together scientists actively engaged in research on the dynamics of slender vortices. It is common knowledge that androgens and oestrogens are formed in both sexes, differences being observed only in concen trations and rhythms of secretion. In the brain of the two sexes, there appear to be the same enzymes which may transform androgens to oestrogens, a process which could explain some aspects of CNS differentiation and activity. Both males and females have androgen and oestrogen receptors, and neural! y these receptors appear to be present at the same order of magnitude and distributed according to the same pattern. The lead climber wears a harness to which a rope is tied. As the climber ascends, the rope is paid out by a partner on the ground. However, the climber generally carries several spike-like pitons and stops when possible to drive one into a small crack or crevice in the rock face. After climbing just above the piton, the climber clips the rope to the piton, using slings and carabiners. A subsequent fall would result in the climber hanging from the piton-if the piton stays in the rock, the slings and carabiners do not fail, the rope does not break, the partner is holding the rope taut and secure, and the climber had not climbed too high above the piton before falling. The climber's safety clearly depends on all of the components of the system. But the piton is distinguished because it connects the natural to the artificial. In 1987 I designed an assembly-level language for Warren Hunt's FM8501 verified microprocessor. I wanted the language to be conveniently used as the object code produced by verified compilers. Thus, I envisioned the language as the first software link in a trusted chain from verified hardware to verified applications programs. At that meeting, the four of us collectively… decided that the time was ripe for an even more focussed discussion of the basic issues in the area of hot-star wind instability and its observable manifestations. Not that the big problems have been solved! Rather, we are currently in a phase of rapid development, both with regard to the models and to the observations. The key issue at this new workshop would be to decide how the time-dependent structures observed in hot-star winds (e. g. , NACs, DACs, blobs, clumps, filaments, shells, puffs, jets, etc. ) relate to radiative and other instabilities. Further questions concern the role of turbulence and the nature of its driver, and the effect of stellar rotation, pulsation, and magnetic fields on time-dependent phenomena in hot-star winds. Of no less importance is the impact of stellar wind variability on the derivation of mass-loss rates, on stellar evolution, and on momentum/energy deposition in the interstellar medium. To attain our goal of maximum confrontation (in the positive sense!) we decided: (1) to limit the workshop to the observers and theoreticians most active in this field in the world; (2) to insist that virtually all participants present a talk, thereby avoiding the distraction of poster sessions; and (3) to allocate approximately half of the allotted time to discussion. 520 pp. Englisch.

But let us note that amongst these problems there are always ones solved by our purely intellectual efforts alone. Progress in this direction does not require the invention of any 'superchip' or other similar elements. It is important to note that the results obtained in this way very often turn out to be more significant than the 'fruits' of relevant technological progress. The hierarchical asymptotic analytical-numerical methods can be - garded as results of such 'purely intellectual efforts'. Their application allows us to simplify essentially computer calculational procedures and, consequently, to reduce the calculational time required. These sites were selected by the Geological Conservation Review and are accordingly designated 'GCR' sites. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the Quaternary. Chapter 2 synthesizes the geomorphological development and Quaternary history of the region, and outlines the principles involved in site selection. The individual GCR site descriptions form the core of the book. In the following chapters, sites are arranged and described in broad geographic areas and by research topic. This is necessitated by the widely disparate nature of the field evidence in Soutb West England: sites demonstrating the full range of Quaternary and geomorphological features are not evenly and conveniently dispersed throughout the region, and some areas have significant gaps. Neither do the individual chapters contain sites that neces sarily equate with particular site selection networks. Rather, the chosen chapter headings provide the least repetitive means of describing the sites and background material. Where possible, a chronological approach, from oldest to youngest, has been used to describe sites within a given chapter.
