This is the second of two volumes that focus on the subject of oxygen activation, the first slanted toward chemistry and the second toward biological chemistry. We planned these volumes to be more general than many monographs of this sort, not as detailed summaries of the authors' own research but rather as general overviews of the field. Our choice of topics was strongly influenced by our syllabus for a course entitled 'Oxygen Chemistry,' which two of us have twice taught jointly at UCLA. Definition of important issues, horizons, and future prospects was an important goal, and, although totally comprehensive coverage was not possible, we believe that we have chosen a representative selection of research topics current to the field. We have targeted this work to a diverse audience ranging from professionals in fields from physics to medicine to beginning graduate students who are interested in rapidly acquiring the basics of this field. 484 pp. Englisch.

For Toulmin, logic is the study of nonns for practical argumentation and decision making. In his v…iew, mathematical logicians were preoccupied with fonnalizing the concepts of logical necessity, consequence and contradiction, at the expense of other equally important issues, such as how to allocate the burden of proof and make rational decisions given limited resources. He also considered it a mistake to look primarily to psychology, linguistics or the cognitive sciences for answers to these fundamentally nonnative questions. Toulmin's concerns about logic, writing in the 1950's, are equally applicable to the field of Artificial Intelligence today. The mainstream of Artificial Intelligence has focused on the analytical and empirical aspects of intelligence, without giving adequate attention to the nonnative, regulative functions of knowledge representation, problem solving and decision-making. Nonnative issues should now be of even greater interest, with the shift in perspective of AI from individual to collective intelligence, in areas such as multi-agent systems, cooperative design, distributed artificial intelligence, and computer-supported cooperative work. The number of scientif…ic papers on the subject that have been published since is quite impressive. Recently, a few surveys and special journal issues have appeared. Time has come to integrate some of the knowledge in a book. Apparently, this is the first monograph on dusty and self-gravitational plasmas. While the circle of pertinent problems is rather clearly defined, not all of them are equally represented here. The authors have concentrated on cooperative phenomena (Le. waves and instabilities) in the dusty plasma and the effects of self-gravitation. At the same time, in an attempt to present the vast material consistently, we have included such topics as electrostatics of the dusty plasma and gravitoelectrodynamics of individual charged particles. Also mentioned are astrophysical implications, mostly concerning planetary rings. We hope that the book shall be of interest and value both to specialists and those (astro )physicists who have just discovered this area of plasma physics. A conventional approach to calculation of shock layer flows consists in a successive solution of the inviscid gas and boundary layer equations. When the afore-mentioned effects become important, implementation of these models meets difficulties or even becomes impossible.
