Test response intervals and Shift response intervals are formulated and validated against relevant biological assemblage shifts. This case study is the first to suggest recommended values for the nitrogen and phosphorus cycle with identifiable shifts caused in biological assemblages. In his introduction, Stephen Rothman, of the University of Chicago, USA and one of the driving forces behind research on skin at t…he time, wrote: 'The pilary system is a perfect micr9cosmic structure. In this microcos mos we find birth, development, ageing and death, activity and rest, color for mation and decolorification, greasiness and dryness, infection and sterilization, hypertrophy and atrophy, Qenign tumours and malignant ones. ' He foresaw the human pilary system as a model for the study of a multitude of human diseases including ageing and cancer. It was not, how ever, until the seventies that the development of micro-biochemical tech niques indeed allowed the use of the human hair follicle as a convenient biopsy tissue for Biomedical Research in general. Measurement of enzyme activities, and important co-factors, and culturing of cells from single follicles all became possible. In the eighties dermal papilla cells were grown in cul ture and this opened the way to study hair differentiation in vitro. Studying hair differentiation is, in fact, studying growth regulation and it is this aspect that by far transcends the importance of studying hair growth itself. Let us not forget that metastatic prostate cancer is treated with the same drug -cyproterone acetate -that is used for the treatment of alopecia and hirsutism in women. 348 pp. Englisch.

The International Biological Program, IBP, had at this time recommended an integrated study of ecosystems selected in proportion to their representation of a particular zone or ecological conditions. I took this opportunity to propose Lake Chad as the model of a tropicallake in a semi-arid c1imate as part of the activity of the section Productivity of freshwater communities (PF). With the efficient help ofDr B. Dussart a research program was established involving the establishment of a permanent team of ten researchers in Chad. Apart from myself, ORSTOM only had three hydrobiologists: Mr R. Gras, Mr G. Loubens and Mr A. Iltis. These valuable researchers who had been working for the 'Centre Technique et Forestier Tropical' and had acquired considerable experience in African freshwaters, unhesitatingly accepted to join me at Fort-Lamy. Immunosuppression can be mediated by many hundreds of agents and it has been difficult to strike a balance between the 'small print' of drug action in animals and the useful ness or otherwise of drugs and other agents for inducing immunosuppression in patients. The first six chapters deal mainly with the experimental aspects of lmmunosuppression and include a full discussion of total lymphoid lrradiation and cyclosporin-A. Both these agents have shown great promise recently as forms of immunosuppression in animals and undoubtedly will come to be used more and more in patients recelvmg transplants of one form or another. The last four chapters are devoted to the use of the more traditional immunosuppressive agents for specific clinical conditions. In her chapter on renal transplantation, Dr McGeown describes in great detail not only the immunosuppressive regime she employs but the general manage ment of transplant patients. Traditionally, transmission electron microscopes are manually operated scientific instruments, but they also have enormous potential for use in industrial applications. However, this new market has quite different characteristics. There are strong demands for cost-effective analysis, accurate and precise measurements, and ease-of-use. These demands can be translated into new system qualities, e.g. reliability, predictability and high throughput, as well as new functions, e.g. automation of electron microscopic analyses, automated focusing and positioning functions.From scientific instrument to industrial machine takes a pragmatic approach to the problem of architectural stress. In particular, it describes the outcomes of the Condor project, a joint endeavour by a consortium of industrial and academic partners. In this collaboration an integrated approach was essential to successfully combine various scientific results and show the first steps towards a new direction. System modelling and prototyping were the key techniques to develop better understanding and innovative solutions to the problems associated with architectural stress.From scientific instruments to industrial machine is targeted mainly at industrial practitioners, in particular system architects and engineers working on high tech systems. It can therefore be read without particular knowledge of electron microscope systems or microscopic applications. The book forms a bridge between academic and applied science, and high tech industrial practice. Sophisticated gamma ray detecting camera systems and computer links enable the clinical investigator to image d…ifferent regions of the body and to quantify organ function. Parallel developments have also occurred in the field of radiopharmaceuticals, and today a wide range of products is available that will exhibit specific uptake within target tissues following parenteral administration. For example, radioiodide is taken up by the thyroid and iodinated fatty acids can be used to image the myocardium. Labelled antibodies have been used with success to target certain tumours. The concept of targeting has also been considered by pharmaceutical scientists who wish to deliver drugs rather than radionuclides to specific sites in the body. The systems that have been employed are often physically similar to those used as radiopharmaceuticals (for example colloids, aerosols and liposomes). Furthermore, pioneering work by Digenis and others in the United States States and by Alpsten and co-workers (1976)in Sweden had demonstrated the potential of gamma scintigraphy for investigating the fate of tablets and capsules in the gastrointestinal tract of man in a non invasive way. Among the methods of recycling the agricultural use of sludge is a traditional one and a good example with a long history of a meanlngful use of waste material. Increasing demands of water pollution control in the last de cades leading to intensified and extended sewage treatment processes and thus to an increase of the sludge quantity have caused problems in this field in general. In addition, there were local problems of industrial pollution which have led to an increase of harmful substances in municipal sewage sludges. So, when the Concerted Action COST 68 was set up to study the beneficial and harmful effects of the agricultural use of sludge, investigation of harmful substances in the sludges and their environmental effects was 9ne of the main tasks of work. Although the progress of analytical techniques enabled the environmental authorities and institutions to determine harmful substances in sludges with great accuracy, it became clear that unsatisfactory results and an incomplete reproduc ibility of analytical findings often were not due to shortcom ings in the analytical procedure itself but to a preceding in vestigation step: Improper sampling and sample preparation. 104 pp. Englisch.

Thus, for most science teachers, especially those in physics and chemistry, the textbook is their key r…esource and their students' core source of information. Science education historiography recognizes the role played by the history and philosophy of science in developing the content of our textbooks, and with this in mind, the authors analyze more than 120 general chemistry textbooks published in the USA, based on criteria derived from a historical reconstruction of wave-particle duality. They come to some revealing conclusions, including the fact that very few textbooks discussed issues such as the suggestion, by both Einstein and de Broglie, and before conclusive experimental evidence was available, that wave-particle duality existed. Other large-scale omissions included de Broglie's prescription for observing this duality, and the importance of the Davisson-Germer experiments, as well as the struggle to interpret the experimental data they were collecting. Also untouched was the background to the role played by Schrödinger in developing de Broglie's ideas. The authors argue that rectifying these deficiencies will arouse students' curiosity by giving them the opportunity to engage creatively with the content of science curricula. They also assert that it isn't just the experimental data in science that matters, but the theoretical insights and unwonted inspirations, too. In addition, the controversies and discrepancies in the theoretical and experimental record are key drivers in understanding the development of science as we know it today. 56 pp. Englisch.

In chapter II some mathematical concepts are presented and in chapter III two related choice models are treated, the first one based on preferences, the second one on choice functions. The second part consists of chapters IV, V and VI and covers consumer choice theory. After the pre sentation of the mathematical tools, two models that are extensions of the models of chapter III are dealt with. In the discussion of consumer choice theory the concept of duality plays an important role and it is found that duality is closely related to the notion of favourability introduced in chap ter II I. I then marked 15 ants with red paint and turned them loose. They made several t…rips to and fro, glancing in at the places of worship, but not entering. I then turned loose 15 more painted blue; they acted just as the red ones had done. I now gilded 15 and turned them loose. No change in the result; the 45 traveled back and forth in a hurry persistently and continuously visiting each fane, but never entering. This satisfied me that these ants were without religious prejudices-just what I wished; for under no other conditions would my next and greater experiment be valuable. I now placed a small square of white paper within the door of each fane; and upon the mosque paper I put a pinch of putty, upon the temple paper a dab of tar, upon the synagogue paper a trifle of turpentine, and upon the cathedral paper a small cube of sugar. First I liberated the red ants. They examined and rejected the putty, the tar and the turpentine, and then took to the sugar with zeal and apparent sincere conviction. I next liberated the blue ants, and they did exactly as the red ones had done. The gilded ants followed. The preceding results were precisely repeated. 396 pp. Englisch.

I have tried to set this book in this new perspective, by severely limiting the choice of examples from classical celestial mechanics and by retaining only those useful in calculating the trajectory of a body in space. The main chapter in this book is the fifth, where a detailed solution is given of the problem of motion of an artificial satellite in the Earth's gravitational field, using the methods of Von Zeipel and of Brouwer. It is shown how Lagrange's equations can be applied to this problem. The first four chapters contain proofs of the main results useful for these two methods: the elliptical solution of the two-body problem and the basic algebra of celestial mechanics; some theorems of analytical mechanics; the Delaunay variables and the Lagrangian equations of variation of elements; the expansion of the disturbing function and the Bessel functions necessary for this expansion. The last two chapters are more descriptive in character. In them I have summarized briefly some of the classical theories of celestial mechanics, and have tried to show their distinctive characteristics without going into details. 140 pp. Englisch.

'The higher in the scale of living things, the more numerous, the more perfect, and the more compli cated do these regulatory agencies become.' Adrenal medullary secretion in preparation of 'fight or flight' may be con sidered the first described behavioral neuroendocrine response. The conse quences of more prolonged stress on pituitary-adrenal cortical function and the subsequent unfolding of the means by which the brain controls the secre tion of the anterior and posterior pituitary glands led to the birth of neuroen docrinology. During the last decade, neuroendocrinology has taken a remarkable turn. Peptides which were believed at first to be involved solely in control of the pituitary by the hypothalamus were found in other areas of the brain. Other peptides were encountered in brain by their activity in competing for the high affinity binding of drugs to their receptors, and still others, first found in peripheral organs, were discovered also in brain.
