It does so using several types and sources of information from the census unit England and Wales, and from Ireland. T…he sources of information used in this study include memoirs, diaries, poems, church records and numerical accounts. They offer descriptions of the quality of life and child mortality over the three centuries under study. Additional sources for the nineteenth century are two census-derived numerical indexes of the quality of life. They are the VICQUAL index for England and Wales, and the QUALEIRE index for Ireland. Statistical procedures have been applied to the numbers provided by the sources with the aim to identify effects of and associations between such variables as gender, age, and social background. The briefs examines the results to consider the impact of children's deaths upon parents and families, and concludes that there are differences and continuities across the centuries. 100 pp. Englisch.

Thus, for most science teachers, especially those in physics and chemistry, the textbook is their key r…esource and their students' core source of information. Science education historiography recognizes the role played by the history and philosophy of science in developing the content of our textbooks, and with this in mind, the authors analyze more than 120 general chemistry textbooks published in the USA, based on criteria derived from a historical reconstruction of wave-particle duality. They come to some revealing conclusions, including the fact that very few textbooks discussed issues such as the suggestion, by both Einstein and de Broglie, and before conclusive experimental evidence was available, that wave-particle duality existed. Other large-scale omissions included de Broglie's prescription for observing this duality, and the importance of the Davisson-Germer experiments, as well as the struggle to interpret the experimental data they were collecting. Also untouched was the background to the role played by Schrödinger in developing de Broglie's ideas. The authors argue that rectifying these deficiencies will arouse students' curiosity by giving them the opportunity to engage creatively with the content of science curricula. They also assert that it isn't just the experimental data in science that matters, but the theoretical insights and unwonted inspirations, too. In addition, the controversies and discrepancies in the theoretical and experimental record are key drivers in understanding the development of science as we know it today. 56 pp. Englisch.

It has the characteristics of a work on industrial econometrics. On the one hand relevant economica…l, statistical and mathematical theory is treated and on the other a model for a very actual situation has been created and utilised to solve a practical problem. The selection from current reference material always has a personal tinge of course, and other theoreticians will find some of the author's departures from the theme a little unnecessary. However, if the theory propounded in this book is tested for its relevance in solving practical problems, the selection may be regarded as a success. Thanks to the way in which the case is developed the book is of great practical use. So often in writings on operations research theory is applied to so-called practical examples, which in fact can only be des cribed as five finger exercises. It is clear from the early chapters that the author has struggled with this problem but that he has found a solution. And in his concluding remarks he indicates briefly how this case can be incbrporated in a context which goes beyond short-term optimisation. In the description of the preparatory and implementation phases the author shows how a clash between practical implementation and theoretical application can successfully be avoided in this preparatory work. 196 pp. Englisch.

Tinbergen in his well-known 19- publication: 'A Metho…d and its Application to Investment Activity', to the empirical testing of increasingly explicit theories of production behaviour. It was principally D. Jorgenson who gave a great push to this intensified interest in micro-economic investment, with his famous 1965-paper: 'Anticipation and Investment Behaviour', in which he formulated a pure neoclassical model of investment behaviour under the conditions of a (simple) homogeneous production technology and perfectly competi tive markets. But, although the scope of the familiar flexible accelerator model was considerably extended by the introduction of relative factor prices, the resulting investment relationship generally remained one of the most ill-estimated equations in econometric models. The very rigid assumptions of pure neoclassical models might have caused these bad results. More over, the required ex post measure for aggregate capital stock is very deficient for most economies. Hence, it should be interesting to formulate investment models subject to less rigid restrictions on production and market behaviour and, preferably, not containing any measure of aggre gate capital stock. 356 pp. Englisch.

I believe that anyone dealing with Yugoslavia has found it difficult to escape the spell of this fascinating country. There is its history, rich in struggles and achievements, its cultural heritage, the beauty of its land scapes and, last but not least, the character and qualities of its people. But while anyone of these features (to which others could easily be added) may have its special appeal depending on one's personal inclinations, it is undoubtedly Yugoslavia's socio-economic system that arouses universal interest. For some it represents the only system that eventually can ensure a just society, while for others its theoretical foundations are utopian and its practical implementation an incoherent muddle. The debate in the West about the merits of Yugoslav socialism will continue for a long time, and if at this stage a personal comment is called for then it must be that I have been struck by two things: modesty and courage. This satisfied me that these ants were without religious prejudices-just what I wished; for under no other conditions would my next and greater experiment be valuable. I now placed a small square of white paper within the door of each fane; and upon the mosque paper I put a pinch of putty, upon the temple paper a dab of tar, upon the synagogue paper a trifle of turpentine, and upon the cathedral paper a small cube of sugar. First I liberated the red ants. They examined and rejected the putty, the tar and the turpentine, and then took to the sugar with zeal and apparent sincere conviction. The Kikuyu live around the Eastern and Southern bound aries and the closely related Uembu an…d Umeru on the S.E. and N.E. respectively. Early in this century the Masai lived to the N.W. and North, but after continual warfare between them and their neighbours, the European administrators of that time moved them to a special reserve to the South, which accounts at the present day for the retention in the Masai language of many words that refer to Mount Kenya. Kikuyu folk-lore tells how, when the earth was formed, a man named Mogai made a great mountain, Kere-Nyaga. The fine white powder (snow) covering the peak, which they called ira, was said to be the bed of Ngai (God), and during male and female circumcision ceremonies a white powder was placed on the wound, and the ini tiates were told that this material had been brought from the summit of the mountain. In fact all important tribal ceremonies were, and in many cases still are conducted facing the mountain. Such occasions include marriage and sacrifice when, in time of hardship, Ngai's aid is called upon (CAGNOLO 1933, KENYATTA 1938, CRIRA 1959). 176 pp. Englisch.

I have tried to set this book in this new perspective, by severely limiting the choice of examples from classical celestial mechanics and by retaining only those useful in calculating the trajectory of a body in space. The main chapter in this book is the fifth, where a detailed solution is given of the problem of motion of an artificial satellite in the Earth's gravitational field, using the methods of Von Zeipel and of Brouwer. It is shown how Lagrange's equations can be applied to this problem. The first four chapters contain proofs of the main results useful for these two methods: the elliptical solution of the two-body problem and the basic algebra of celestial mechanics; some theorems of analytical mechanics; the Delaunay variables and the Lagrangian equations of variation of elements; the expansion of the disturbing function and the Bessel functions necessary for this expansion. The last two chapters are more descriptive in character. In them I have summarized briefly some of the classical theories of celestial mechanics, and have tried to show their distinctive characteristics without going into details. 140 pp. Englisch.

Several years later, Sir George Beatson observed that remission… of disseminated breast cancer could be achieved in premenopausal patients by performing bilateral oophorectomy. As a result of the contri butions of Hedley Atkins, Charles Huggins and others, additive and ablative hormonal therapies have been widely used for the treatment of advanced breast cancers for several decades. Model systems to study the effects of hormones on growth and regression of breast tumors have been available for many years; however, the complexities of the hormonal environment have rendered in vivo studies difficult in man and experimental animals. Recently, the availability of long-term cultures of breast cancer cells has stimulated many investigators to use these cell lines to unravel the mechanisms of hormone action. Because of the extreme diversity and complexity of advances regarding the endocrinology of the breast and breast cancers, a multi-authored review was deemed necessary. It has been gratifying to receive contributions from many noted scholars. In Volume I of this monograph, the influence of steroid hormones and their antagonists upon normal and neoplastic tissues of the mammary gland are presented. JIT marks a significant departure from previous western approaches to manufacturing mana…gement, and aims to improve quality levels and customer service while decreasing lead times and inventory levels. The use of simple though effective methods can, with proper management, lead to continual improvements in the manufacturing operation. A number of companies have now implemented JIT and some of these implementations have been very successful. However, what is becoming increasingly clear is that there is a significant number of JIT implementations that fail to achieve the potential benefits of JIT. It is not an easy task, and there are a number of pitfalls that await the unwary manager. My motivation for writing this book has been my experience of working with companies that have been successful in JIT and of seeing what needs to be done and how the implementing most common pitfalls can be avoided. The book is oriented towards batch manufacturing since this accounts for a large proportion of manufacturing in most western countries. But emergency interventions usually are one time efforts involving a sequence of evaluation, therapeutic intervention, and referral out. Response is limited or absent and there are no opportunities for corrections over time. Therefore, interventions and referrals must be made on the basis of first evaluations, with positive conviction related to current best effort and despite the lack of guidance derived from tracking the patient's progress over time. The staff must tolerate the risk-taking required, and must also be prepared to forego the gratification of seeing the beneficial results of the work done. Even in pro grams structured to allow return visits, and despite the occasional information provided by other agencies after referrals, the majority of patients are lost to follow up. The usefulness of specific interventions is hard to evaluate and the satisfaction of seeing a task completed is rarely available. The emergency program staff must tolerate a considerable amount of stress in the environment. Emergency care centers are collection points for an extraordinary volume of human suffering. The anxieties and strains asso ciated with persistent urgency of need, alarm related to unexpected difficul ties, fearfulness about outcome, closeness of death, and presence of pain pervade the atmosphere. 256 pp. Englisch.
