Firstly, that our conception of the syndrome is in a state of flux. I remember the surgeon who, when I was a student, returned a referral saying he would operate on the man when his dementia got better. Feeling superior, and encouraged by the consultant psychiatrist, we students laughed a good deal at this. Before we finished clerking on that Unit a visiting Professor of Psychiatry had demonstrated the reversibility of the symptoms of dementia in a patient with a rare metabolic disorder. Perhaps ignorance is sometimes an advance on received wisdom. The lesson is the concept of dementia must always reflect the state of knowledge and is therefore in a sense ad hoc. In order to serve this goal, all participants are accommodated in Rolduc Abbey, a well-preserved medieval monument in Limburg (The Netherlands) to provide an optimum atmosphere for the exchange of ideas. About 350 participants took part in the 4th Rolduc Polymer Meeting, which was held from 23 to 27 April 1989. This volume contains invited and selected contributed papers on topics such as solution properties, chemistry, emulsion polymerization, liquid crystalline polymers, structure/ morphology and blends/composites. Several theorems which were proved in the abstract now carry definite mathematical and physical sig nificance. Several physical observations which were not understood before are now explained in terms of models based on new group-theoretical structures such as dy namical groups and Lie supergroups. The workshop was designed to bring together those mathematicians and mathematical physicists who are actively working in this broad spectrum of research and to provide them with the opportunity to present their recent results and to discuss the challenges facing them in the many problems that remain. In Session 2 recent results on some relevant nuclear reaction rates have been presented. Session 3 grouped the contributions concerning the quasi-static evolution of normal stars, its relevance for the nucleosynthesis of the varlOUS elements and isotopes, and the comparison of the evolutionary models with the observations. Session 4 addressed the important questions of identifying the precursors of both Type I and Type II supernovae, and of determining the detailed composition of the ejecta by explosive nucleosynthesis associated with these events. Finally, Session 5 was devoted to a presentation of recent calculations of the evolution of hypothetical pre-galactic very massive objects (in cluding their potential role in pre-galactic nucleosynthesis), and to reviewing the progress that has been made in understanding the chemical evolution of galaxies. The technological, or applied, areas of polymers have perhaps received more emphasis historically than those of other allied disciplines. Indeed, various plastic and rubber materials were successful items of commerce long before the macromolecular concept itself was firmly established. The more fundamental aspects of the field were also largely developed in industrial laboratories. The early work of Mark and Meyer at IG Farben, and that of Carrothers and Flory at Du Pont, are good examples of this. Leibniz and others. During the first century of its existence, this theory consisted only of isolated methods of solving certain types of differential equations; but the problem of the existence of a solution and its representability in quadratures was posed already in the second. As a result of numerous investigations it became clear that integrability in quadratures is an extremely rare phe nomenon and that the solution of many differential equations arising in applications cannot be expressed in quadratures. Also the methods of numerical integration of equations did not open the road to the general theory since these methods yield only one particular solution and this solution is obtained on a finite interval. In those years took place the USA Consensus Conference, followed first by the Italian Consensus Conference and then by the European one. They marked the final solution to the 'querelle' on cholesterol and ischemic cardiopathy. On the basis of the results obtained from the Coronary Primary Prevention Trial (CPPT), plasmatic cholesterol is now no longer considered 'a' risk factor in cardiovas cular diseases, but 'the cause' of atherosclerosis and its organ damages. This was also the basic statement that came out of the 6th International Congress on 'Atherosclerosis and Cardiovascular Diseases'. The meeting was attended by specialists from various countries representing different experimental ap proaches to the cardiovascular diseases, from basic research (receptor pathol ogy, apoproteins physiopathology); to epidemiology (both observational study and prevention); to pure cardiology in its aspects of physiopathology, diagnosis and therapy; to the new invasive and non-invasive diagnostic methods; and to the presentation of studies which correlate new variables (serotonin, en dogenous opioids) with the atheromasic disease. The final outcome of this re search is therapy, be it a pharmacological, nutritional and/or surgical one. These papers offer basic properties of the layered structures and possibility of various applications of the structures to present and future semiconductor devices. The second symposium was also held at Churchill College on 30-31 July, 1981, and this, the third, took place at the same college on 30-31 July, 1983. The philosophy of the ADG is that medical microbiologists, veterinarians, toxicologists and dental bacteriologists have much to learn from each other and can best be achieved by bringing these various disciplines together frequently and in informal surroundings. Although thrombo embolism was first recognized by Laennec in 1819 and defined by Virchow in 1846, its development was not well understood and its prevention escaped our best efforts until now. This all-too-com mon, sudden, unexpected and unwanted form of morbidity and mortality, always referred to in the surgical patient as postoper ative pulmonary thromboembolism, has now become the major complication of all surgery. However, it occurs with equal fre quency in hospitalized non-operative patients as well, so the latter are also in need of this prophylaxis if this calamity is to be avoided. The mass ofliterature generated in the past few years has produced some confusion as to which of a number of methods of heparin prophylaxis gives the best results. It is the intention of this book to help clarify the situation and thereby resolve the problem by offering a procedure of subcutaneous heparin prophylaxis which is acceptable, safe and simple to administer.
