Der Angeklagte, in der Reife seines Lebens vor die vehementesten Angriffe gestellt, kam nur durch sein Werk zu Wort. Dies genügte jedoch, dass sich unter den sowjetischen Physikern und Philosophen noch zur Zeit Stalins mannhafte Stimmen der Verteidigung fanden. 1955 wurde der Prozess mit der offiziellen Anerkennung der Relativitäts theorie durch die Parteiphilosophie abgeschlossen. Es war ein Sieg der Wahrheit über die Gewalt. Die Folgen mussten das Ansehen der kommunistischen Ideologie erschüttern. Es hatte sich herausgestellt, dass zwischen der angeblich einzig wissenschaftlichen Philosophie und der exaktesten Naturwissen schaft, der Physik, ein Abgrund klafft, den zu überbrücken die Sowjet philosophie bis heute bemüht ist. Andererseits begannen die sowjetischen Physiker, wachgerufen durch die Appelle der Philosophen, ihr eigenes Weltbild mit adäquaten Methoden zu durchdenken. Diese ganze Ent wicklung ist von hohem Wert für eine Diagnose der geistigen Struktur der Sowjetgesellschaft.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -When I entered the graduate program in philosophy at the University of Pittsburgh in 1961, Nicholas Rescher had just joined the department of philosophy' to begin, with Adolf Grunbaum, the building of what is now a philosophy cente…r of worldwide renown. Very soon his exceptional energy and versatility were in evidence, as he founded the American Philosophical Quarterly, generated a constantly rising stack of preprints, pursued impor tant scholarly research in Arabic logic, taught a staggering diversity of histori cal and thematic courses, and obtained, in cooperation with Kurt Baier, a major grant for work in value theory. That is all part of the record. What may come as a surprise is that none of it was accomplished at the expense of his students. Papers were returned in a matter of days, often the next class meet ing. And so easily accessible was he for philosophical discussion that, since (inevitably) we shared many philosophical interests, I asked him to serve as my dissertation advisor. My work in connection with this project led to a couple of journal articles while his, characteristically, led to a book. Our dis cussions certainly helped me, and while they may also have had some small influence on him, in the end our views were quite distinct. I was not only allowed complete independence, but was positively encouraged to think of my own ideas and to develop them independently. People's concern for this hazard seems to be greater than that for other types of toxic wastes, widely produced and released to the environment (heavy metals, PCBs, arsenic etc.) though these might last even longer. In fact public attitude toward risk depends very strongly on the nature of the risk, as clearly illustrated ill the initial papers of these proceedings. On this basis it appears that tile safety of the nuclear practice, including waste disposal, cannot be assessed only by comparison with other practices or risks. For this reason the analysts have accepted the challenge of investigating the long term safety of this type of waste, taking it much further than for many other known pollution problems affecting mankind. The book was published by the Institute of Philosophy of the Academy of Sciences of the Su. The responsible editors were P. Pavelkin and G. Kurbatova and the text was prepared by eleven eminent Soviet philosophers (Y. F. Berestnev, M. A. Dynnik, P. N. Fedoseev, Ju. P. Francev, G. E. Glezerman, M. D. Kammari, F. V. Konstantinov, P. V. Kopnin, I. V. Kuznecov, M. M. Rozental', A. F. Siskin) under the direction of Konstantinov. As stated in the preface (p. 5) of the book, it was read in manuscript form by numerous scholars and professors of philosophy and then thoroughly discussed in three separate sessions (in the Academy of Sciences, and the Universities of Leningrad and Moscow). This task could not have been accomplished without relating post-war developments to those of the inter war period. Consequently, the period studied covers the years 1918-1958. Yet another extension was necessary. Marxism-Leninism regards sociology as a part of philosophy. Moreover, Marxism-Leninism often resorts to sociology to support or justify some of its philosophical views. Finally, its criticism of 'bourgeois philosophy' is often concerned with social philosophy and socio logical theories which supposedly are implicit or explicit in 'bourgeois philoso phy'. For this reason it was desirable to consider in this study some theoretical and methodological problems of the social sciences. They are taken into ac count when they illuminate philosophical controversies or the evolution of Marxist-Leninist philosophy. Marxism-Leninism is not only a new line of development but also a new point of departure in Polish philosophy. It provides a striking contrast with the established philosophical tradition which originated roughly at the time when G. E. Moore and Bertrand Russell initiated the analytical trend in English philosophy. The contrast can be epitomised by the contradistinction of philoso phy and ideology, chosen as the title of this study. 616 pp. Englisch.

One tradition goes back to the Greek thinkers and includes practically every great name in the…history of philosophy, since almost all philosophers took a stand on epistemological problems. To be sure, theory of knowledge is not to be identified with theory of science. Science is a relatively new phenomenon, dating from modern times. It is a source of knowledge, the main source (in our type of culture), but certainly not the only one. Also, epistemology deals with questions rather far removed from the practice of science. The nature of truth; the sources of knowledge; the limits of knowledge. Many people claim to understand science without being able to solve these perennial problems. What we call today the science of science is not concerned with, say, the Kantian question how synthetic a priori truths are possible. However, the influence of the philosophical heritage is still felt in present day metascientific thOUght. Philosophy of science does exist, although in a form very different from classical epis temology. It has developed (under that name) into general metho dology of science, which roughly means: analysis of scientific theories and analysis of their validation. In both cases, mathematical and logical tools playa great role. Scientific theories are analyzed by means of modern semantics (theory of models). The titles, places and dates of previous Colloquia are noted on pa…ge ii, with brief particulars of the ensuing publications. From the beginning, the emphasis has been on money and finance in a European setting, and the most recent Colloquium, held in Wiesbaden for the three days beginning on September 29, 1977, followed this well-established pattern. The subject, 'New Approaches in Monetary Policy', was divided into four aspects, each discussed in separate commissions, as described in the General Report (since the languages used by SUERF are English and French, it appears in the original French on page 327, and in an English translation, on page 355. Three other chapters and the Preface are in French. ) The separate commissions, each with its own chairman and rapporteur, were addressed by the authors of the specially written papers, all experts, active in their fields, and they also led the discussions. M. Raymond Bertrand, the President ofSUERF, was Chairman for the Colloquium as a whole, which was in plenary session for the opening and closing meetings. Firstly, that our conception of the syndrome is in a state of flux. Gone, for instance, in the past decade or two, is the requirement of… a chronic, progressive, irreversible disorder for the diag nosis. I remember the surgeon who, when I was a student, returned a referral saying he would operate on the man when his dementia got better. Feeling superior, and encouraged by the consultant psychiatrist, we students laughed a good deal at this. Before we finished clerking on that Unit a visiting Professor of Psychiatry had demonstrated the reversibility of the symptoms of dementia in a patient with a rare metabolic disorder. Perhaps ignorance is sometimes an advance on received wisdom. The lesson is the concept of dementia must always reflect the state of knowledge and is therefore in a sense ad hoc. Secondly, what the criteria for, and also who the arbiters of, the diagnosis might be is not always clear. It is traditional to think that expressing opinions and making diagnosis of mental illness is almost a civic right, i.e. 244 pp. Englisch.

Although meteorology is not covered by a specific Community programme as such, various Community actions dealing with meteorology are now included in the EEC research programme on climatology (the 'EPOCH' programme - 1989-92) of mechanisms of extreme and sudden concerning particularly the study meteorological events, in order to predict catastrophies and consequently to reduce human and material losses. In the context of COST cooperation, which is supported by the Commission of the European Communities, the COST 73 project (1986-1991) associates 16 countries in Western Europe with the aim of setting up a weather radar network providing real-time measurements of rain, snow or hail precipitations. In this project, radar data are transmitted and combined if appropriate with satellite data - in one or more 'compositing centres' of the participating countries, in order to improve weather forecasting. Together with the COST 73 Management Committee, the Commission of the European Communities organized a seminar on this matter, in Brussels on 5-8 September 1989, at the half-way stage of the project. 600 pp. Englisch.

Icelandic geoscientists have followed, and taken pa…rt in, these studies with a keen interest; one of the first tasks of the Geoscience Society of Iceland was to organize an Icelandic symposium on 'Iceland and Mid-Ocean Ridges' in 1967. At the suggestion of Dr. G. Pfuason, the Society and various local research institutions formed in 1972 an Organizing Committee for an international meeting on earth science. It was decided that it should be devoted to examining the various expressions of geo~namical forces in the North Atlantic area, in particular at the ocean ridges passing through Iceland. Apart from the scientific content of such a meeting, the organizers also felt it was highly important for scientists from both sides of the Atlantic to meet in Iceland, to become acquainted with recent progress in earth science research there and to coordinate their future research projects in the area. The meeting was held in Reykj avik 1 - 7 July, 1974, and was followed by field trips in Iceland. According to our con temporary state of knowledge, the illness begins with a decreased outflow of aqueous…humor. This leads, sometimes after a period of decreased aqueous humor production due to a feedback mechanism, to an increase in intra ocular pressure (lOP). An elevated lOP can eventually lead to optic nerve damage, which manifests itself morphologically as glaucomatous papillary excavation and functionally in the development of a visual field defect. The classic triad of elevated lOP, papillary excavation and visual field defect, on which the diagnosis of glaucoma was also based in earlier times, is then pre sent. To this can now only be added that tonography usually shows a de crease in aqueous humor outflow and that gonioscopy must reveal an open angle. On the basis of statistical findings, Goldmann has calculated that there may be an interval of as long as 18 years between the initial increase in lOP and the development of visual field defects. This point of view (which has been confirmed in practice) that the onset of the illness can be demon strated by measurement of the lOP has introduced a new element into the discussion around glaucoma, namely, the concept of ocular hypertension. This implies simply that there is an (statistically) elevated intraocular pres sure, even though the optic nerve may not (yet) be damaged. 164 pp. Englisch.

However, the last deca…de has seen a considerable increase of interest in the subject, along two fronts: the topological and the algebraic. The former, which deals largely with algebras of operators on linear spaces, or on manifolds modelled on linear spaces, has been dealt with elsewhere\*). The latter, which is the subject of the present volume, exploits the surprising depth of analogy which exists between infinite-dimen sional Lie algebras and infinite groups. This is not to say that the theory consists of groups dressed in Lie-algebraic clothing. One of the tantalising aspects of the analogy, and one which renders it difficult to formalise, is that it extends to theorems better than to proofs. There are several cases where a true theorem about groups translates into a true theorem about Lie algebras, but where the group-theoretic proof uses methods not available for Lie algebras and the Lie-theoretic proof uses methods not available for groups. The two theories tend to differ in fine detail, and extra variations occur in the Lie algebra case according to the underlying field. Occasionally the analogy breaks down altogether. Orbital and periorbital tumors constitute 34% of this…series, inflammatory diseases including thyroid disorders 50%, arteriovenous abnormalities 4%, and miscellaneous disorders 12%. All patients were thoroughly evaluated clinically and with appropriate diagnostic tests, including ultrasonography (combined A-scan and B-scan), computerized axial tomography (EMI cranial scan), and radiographic tech niques (plain films and hypocycloidal poly tomography), orbital venography, and carotid arteriography. Each test was found to have diagnostic capabil ities which complemented other studies, depending upon the specific disease process involved. No one test was entirely adequate without the others. Radiographic studies demonstrated bony abnormality in 50% of tumor cases, but in only 28% of the entire series of exophthalmos cases. Primary orbital tumors had a lower hield with radiography than did secondary tumors. Computerized tomography demonstrated diagnostic soft tissue abnormality in 86% of tumors, 43% of inflammatory diseases, and an overall yield of 62% positive results. Ultrasonography proved the most versatile test for evaluation of orbital soft tissues, with 80% positive results for tumors, 87% for inflammatory disorders, and 78% overall acurate diagnosis. 568 pp. Englisch.
