One tradition goes back to the Greek thinkers and includes practically every great name in the history of philosophy, since almost all philosophers took a stand on epistemological problems. On the basis of the results obtained from the Coronary Primary Prevention Trial (CPPT), plasmatic cholesterol is now no longer considered 'a' risk factor in cardiovas cular diseases, but 'the cause' of atherosclerosis and its organ damages. Fora long period after this discovery, although many significant results were found, liquid crystal research remained a marginal topic of condensed matter physics. From a more fundamental point of view, the interest in disordered systems. increased in general at the same time. Liquid crystals represented an important dass of such systems. Although thrombo embolism was first recognized by Laennec in 1819 and defined by Virchow in 1846, its development was not well understood and its prevention escaped our best efforts until now. This all-too-com mon, sudden, unexpected and unwanted form of morbidity and mortality, always referred to in the surgical patient as postoper ative pulmonary thromboembolism, has now become the major complication of all surgery. However, it occurs with equal fre quency in hospitalized non-operative patients as well, so the latter are also in need of this prophylaxis if this calamity is to be avoided. The mass ofliterature generated in the past few years has produced some confusion as to which of a number of methods of heparin prophylaxis gives the best results. It is the intention of this book to help clarify the situation and thereby resolve the problem by offering a procedure of subcutaneous heparin prophylaxis which is acceptable, safe and simple to administer. This book provides basic methods and results for the investigation of the special problems in this area. The connection between nonlinear analysis and convex analysis gave rise to the important field of monotone operators from a Banach space into its dual space. These mappings extend the properties of compact operators to the infinite-dimensional case. Generalizations of monotone operators are termed mappings of monotone type. Among these, in the last decade, the pseudo-monotone operators and the mappings of type (M) have provided a more proper tool for solving large classes of nonlinear differential and integral equations. The text dwells upon essentially four interrelated topics: Nonlinear mappings of mono tone type, Hammerstein equations, Odd operators and Variational problems. Very soon his exceptional energy and versatility were in evidence, as he founded the American Philosophical Quarterly, generated a constantly rising stack of preprints, pursued impor tant scholarly research in Arabic logic, taught a staggering diversity of histori cal and thematic courses, and obtained, in cooperation with Kurt Baier, a major grant for work in value theory. That is all part of the record. What may come as a surprise is that none of it was accomplished at the expense of his students. Papers were returned in a matter of days, often the next class meet ing. And so easily accessible was he for philosophical discussion that, since (inevitably) we shared many philosophical interests, I asked him to serve as my dissertation advisor. My work in connection with this project led to a couple of journal articles while his, characteristically, led to a book. The titles, places and dates of previous Colloquia are noted on page ii, with brief particulars of the ensuing publications. From the beginning, the emphasis has been on money and finance in a European setting, and the most recent Colloquium, held in Wiesbaden for the three days beginning on September 29, 1977, followed this well-established pattern. The subject, 'New Approaches in Monetary Policy', was divided into four aspects, each discussed in separate commissions, as described in the General Report (since the languages used by SUERF are English and French, it appears in the original French on page 327, and in an English translation, on page 355. Firstly, that our conception of the syndrome is in a state of flux. Gone, for instance, in the past decade or two, is the requirement of a chronic, progressive, irreversible disorder for the diag nosis. I remember the surgeon who, when I was a student, returned a referral saying he would operate on the man when his dementia got better. Feeling superior, and encouraged by the consultant psychiatrist, we students laughed a good deal at this. Before we finished clerking on that Unit a visiting Professor of Psychiatry had demonstrated the reversibility of the symptoms of dementia in a patient with a rare metabolic disorder. Perhaps ignorance is sometimes an advance on received wisdom. The lesson is the concept of dementia must always reflect the state of knowledge and is therefore in a sense ad hoc. Secondly, what the criteria for, and also who the arbiters of, the diagnosis might be is not always clear. Although meteorology is not covered by a specific Community programme as such, various Community actions dealing with meteorology are now included in the EEC research programme on climatology (the 'EPOCH' programme - 1989-92) of mechanisms of extreme and sudden concerning particularly the study meteorological events, in order to predict catastrophies and consequently to reduce human and material losses. In the context of COST cooperation, which is supported by the Commission of the European Communities, the COST 73 project (1986-1991) associates 16 countries in Western Europe with the aim of setting up a weather radar network providing real-time measurements of rain, snow or hail precipitations. In this project, radar data are transmitted and combined if appropriate with satellite data - in one or more 'compositing centres' of the participating countries, in order to improve weather forecasting. In order to serve this goal, all participants are accommodated in Rolduc Abbey, a well-preserved medieval monument in Limburg (The Netherlands) to provide an optimum atmosphere for the exchange of ideas. About 350 participants took part in the 4th Rolduc Polymer Meeting, which was held from 23 to 27 April 1989. This volume contains invited and selected contributed papers on topics such as solution properties, chemistry, emulsion polymerization, liquid crystalline polymers, structure/ morphology and blends/composites. We are fully aware of the fact that the reader will not find an integrated presentation of lectures in this volume. Icelandic geoscientists have followed, and taken part in, these studies with a keen interest; one of the first tasks of the Geoscience Society of Iceland was to organize an Icelandic symposium on 'Iceland and Mid-Ocean Ridges' in 1967. At the suggestion of Dr. G. Pfuason, the Society and various local research institutions formed in 1972 an Organizing Committee for an international meeting on earth science. It was decided that it should be devoted to examining the various expressions of geo~namical forces in the North Atlantic area, in particular at the ocean ridges passing through Iceland. Apart from the scientific content of such a meeting, the organizers also felt it was highly important for scientists from both sides of the Atlantic to meet in Iceland, to become acquainted with recent progress in earth science research there and to coordinate their future research projects in the area. The meeting was held in Reykj avik 1 - 7 July, 1974, and was followed by field trips in Iceland. According to our con temporary state of knowledge, the illness begins with a decreased outflow of aqueous humor. This leads, sometimes after a period of decreased aqueous humor production due to a feedback mechanism, to an increase in intra ocular pressure (lOP). An elevated lOP can eventually lead to optic nerve damage, which manifests itself morphologically as glaucomatous papillary excavation and functionally in the development of a visual field defect. The classic triad of elevated lOP, papillary excavation and visual field defect, on which the diagnosis of glaucoma was also based in earlier times, is then pre sent. To this can now only be added that tonography usually shows a de crease in aqueous humor outflow and that gonioscopy must reveal an open angle. On the basis of statistical findings, Goldmann has calculated that there may be an interval of as long as 18 years between the initial increase in lOP and the development of visual field defects. This point of view (which has been confirmed in practice) that the onset of the illness can be demon strated by measurement of the lOP has introduced a new element into the discussion around glaucoma, namely, the concept of ocular hypertension. This implies simply that there is an (statistically) elevated intraocular pres sure, even though the optic nerve may not (yet) be damaged. 164 pp. Englisch.
