Very soon his exceptional energy and versatility were in evidence, as he founded the American Philosophical Quarterly, generated a constantly rising stack of preprints, pursued impor tant scholarly research in Arabic logic, taught a staggering diversity of histori cal and thematic courses, and obtained, in cooperation with Kurt Baier, a major grant for work in value theory. That is all part of the record. What may come as a surprise is that none of it was accomplished at the expense of his students. Papers were returned in a matter of days, often the next class meet ing. And so easily accessible was he for philosophical discussion that, since (inevitably) we shared many philosophical interests, I asked him to serve as my dissertation advisor. My work in connection with this project led to a couple of journal articles while his, characteristically, led to a book. Our dis cussions certainly helped me, and while they may also have had some small influence on him, in the end our views were quite distinct. I was not only allowed complete independence, but was positively encouraged to think of my own ideas and to develop them independently. According to our con temporary state of knowledge, the illness begins with a decreased outflow of aqueous humor. This leads, sometimes after a period of decreased aqueous humor production due to a feedback mechanism, to an increase in intra ocular pressure (lOP). An elevated lOP can eventually lead to optic nerve damage, which manifests itself morphologically as glaucomatous papillary excavation and functionally in the development of a visual field defect. The classic triad of elevated lOP, papillary excavation and visual field defect, on which the diagnosis of glaucoma was also based in earlier times, is then pre sent. To this can now only be added that tonography usually shows a de crease in aqueous humor outflow and that gonioscopy must reveal an open angle. On the basis of statistical findings, Goldmann has calculated that there may be an interval of as long as 18 years between the initial increase in lOP and the development of visual field defects. This point of view (which has been confirmed in practice) that the onset of the illness can be demon strated by measurement of the lOP has introduced a new element into the discussion around glaucoma, namely, the concept of ocular hypertension. This implies simply that there is an (statistically) elevated intraocular pres sure, even though the optic nerve may not (yet) be damaged. 164 pp. Englisch.

The main concern of this work is with the medicine of the Northern Nether lands. However, before the end ofthe sixteenth century the Northern and South ern Netherlands were not yet divided into two separate countries; they were still politically one and for the greater part spoke the same Flemish language. So be fore their separation the present-day Belgium and Netherlands also had a com mon medical history. The aim of this series is to highlight some of these topics that deserve particular interest. Research in the field of viral hepatitis has been very intense and successful in recent years. The hepatitis B virus is one of the best explored at the current level of virology. Not only the nucleotid sequence of the viral DNA can be decoded, but also the amino acid compounds of its genetic products are known today. Since the techniques of molecular biology have increasingly found access to clinical laboratory use, hepatitis B virus infection can serve as an example for the importance of molecular biology in clinical hepa tology. Another example for the interdependence of basic science and clini cal medicine represents the research on bile acid metabolism. The investigation of bile acids has revealed new diagnostic approaches to hepatic and intestinal disorders. Commercial kits for the routine measurement of serum bile acids in clinical laboratories by enzymatic or radioimmunologic techniques are now available. The diagnostic value of these measurements in gastroenterology and hepatology shall be defined. Another aspect of bile acid research leads to new per spectives in the treatment of gallstone disease. The dissolution of cholesterol gallstones by chenodeoxycholic acid (therapy) may be quoted as the best example for the development of new phar macotherapeutic principles derived from basic bile acid research. 156 pp. Englisch.

This task could not have been accomplished without relating post-war developments to those of the inter war period. Consequently, the period studied covers the years 1918-1958. Yet another extension was necessary. Marxism-Leninism regards sociology as a part of philosophy. Moreover, Marxism-Leninism often resorts to sociology to support or justify some of its philosophical views. Finally, its criticism of 'bourgeois philosophy' is often concerned with social philosophy and socio logical theories which supposedly are implicit or explicit in 'bourgeois philoso phy'. For this reason it was desirable to consider in this study some theoretical and methodological problems of the social sciences. They are taken into ac count when they illuminate philosophical controversies or the evolution of Marxist-Leninist philosophy. Marxism-Leninism is not only a new line of development but also a new point of departure in Polish philosophy. It provides a striking contrast with the established philosophical tradition which originated roughly at the time when G. E. Moore and Bertrand Russell initiated the analytical trend in English philosophy. This is not to say that the theory consists of groups dressed in Lie-algebraic clothing. One of the tantalising aspects of the analogy, and one which renders it difficult to formalise, is that it extends to theorems better than to proofs. There are several cases where a true theorem about groups translates into a true theorem about Lie algebras, but where the group-theoretic proof uses methods not available for Lie algebras and the Lie-theoretic proof uses methods not available for groups. Since its foundation, the physical properties of binary systems have formed a major research topic of this observatory. Until 1970, the study of visual binaries and the determination of orbits received most emphasis. Since then, also the evolution of close binary systems, such as X-ray binaries, Wolf-Rayet binaries and binary pulsars, has been researched with priority in Lembang. It seemed thus appropriate that a Colloquium devoted to the study of binary systems be held in Lembang at the time of the Observatory's anniversary. In the Colloquium, the role of wide double (and multiple) systems received special emphasis - not only because of the long tradition of visual binary research at Lembang; but also because their role in documenting stellar evolution has been largely overlooked in recent decades, and needs to be brought into focus with the information forthcoming from close binaries. The Colloquium covered the physical properties of visual as well as close binary systems, and their generic relations, in the broadest possible sense. After several years of intensive research on the effects of pollutions on forest ecosystems it is obvious that not a single specific pollutant can be made responsible but a mixture of several components act together or interact with each other. The contributions of the workshop _ reflect to a large extend the results of research projects which were started at the beginning of the eighties.
