Sixty-three carefully chosen profes sionals were invited to participate in this institute together with 12 lecturers and 7 assistants. The 63 participants were selected from a group of almost 140 applicants. Each had the background to learn effectively the set of computer IC design aids which were presented. Each also had individual expertise in at least one of the topics of the Institute. The Institute was designed to provide hands-on type of experience rather than consisting of solely lecture and discussion. Each morning, detailed presentations were made concerning the critical algorithms that are used in the various types of computer IC design aids. Each afternoon a lengthy period was used to provide the participants with direct access to the computer programs. In addition to using the programs, the individual could, if his expertise was sufficient, make modifications of and extensions to the programs, or establish limitations of these present aids. The interest in this hands-on activity was very high and many participants worked with the programs every free hour. It dealt with two aspects of psycho-social problems resulting from breast cancer: 1. Regrettably, in many other cases, the problem would not have existed had the previously undertaken, and potentially simple, apicectomy been carried out competently. There is no good reason why apical surgery should not be undertaken by the general dental practitioner as part of the patient's overall treatment. After all, the problem will usually have arisen either during, or as a result of, routine dental treatment. When one runs an Obesity Clinic there appears to be an unending series of patients who need help. Our understanding of weight control has been advanced not only by the studies of obese patients but also by our investigation of the problems of weight gain in young women with anorexia nervosa. Just as among obese patients there is the group of 'efficient metabolizers' who can maintain their excessive weight with a calorie intake occasion ally as low as 600 kcal per day, so we have demonstrated that among anorexic women there are a few who may fail to gain normal weight with 3500 kcal per day. Some of the latter group may in fact develop T3 (tri-iodothyronine) thyrotoxicosis. One of the major unknown factors is still what determines when patients may be at these extremes. If we knew how to control these extremes we would like, for a time, to switch each to the opposite end of the spectrum. One factor which is becoming apparent from studying people in the machine which continually plots metabolic rate is that the metabolic response to food is a' major factor in determining a person's weight. In the last 35 years a completely new branch of bio acoustics, involving ultrasounds, has been made possible by technical developments that now allow these inaudible sounds to be detected and studied. This subject has a personal fascination for the authors, perhaps because of the novelty of 'listening in' to these previously unknown sig nals, perhaps because of the wide variety of ways in which different animals use them. Many studies of different aspects of animal ultrasound have now been published and a review of them all seems to be timely. Ultrasound is is biologically arbitrary; other animals defined in human terms and may produce similar signals at lower frequencies for similar purposes. This book attempts to be comprehensive but the limits of the subject are rather difficult to define. It should be read in conjunction with other books on audible bio-acoustics. And further, the wide variety of antihypertensive drugs currently used, often without a full understanding of the mechanisms involved, suggests that we often know as little about what decreases blood pressure with antihypertensive therapy as we know about what increases pressure in the first place.
