However, his ample experience in investigation and systematisation of tsunami waves for the Pacific area [Soloviev and Go, 1974, 1975; Soloviev, Go and Kim, 1986] has been widely used in compiling this book. The Mediterranean coasts are the cradle of civilisation. Written accounts of past disasters in this region of the Earth are rather numerous and highly reliable. Therefore the results of the tsunami study in the Mediterranean Sea are of specific value both for the scientific community and for humanity at large.

The type of cooperation was unusual as it focused on both research and the education of students undertaking either M. Sc. thesis projects or a program of practical training in the various aspects of studying land use. Since funding was provided by W AU, a high degree of scientific autonomy was created that has clearly benefited the independent, scientific rigor of the work. Over the ten-year period, the program has changed from being a patchwork of various insulated specialist projects, into a truly interdisciplinary effort, leading to the development of innovative tools for analyzing land use on a number of geographical scales. These tools are presented in this book. Besides CATIE and MAG, cooperation with other Costa Rican partner institutions has been essential from the beginning, and this process of interaction has also evolved considerably over time. 288 pp. Englisch.

In this book, we will introduce non-Archimedean analogues of Nevanlinna theory and its applications. In value distribution theory, the main problem is that given a holomorphic curve f : C -+ M into a projective variety M of dimension n and a family 01 of hypersurfaces on M, under a proper condition of non-degeneracy on f, find the defect relation. If 01 n is a family of hyperplanes on M = r in general position and if the smallest dimension of linear subspaces containing the image f(C) is k, Cartan conjectured that the bound of defect relation is 2n - k + 1. Generally, if 01 is a family of admissible or normal crossings hypersurfaces, there are respectively Shiffman's conjecture and Griffiths-Lang's conjecture. The elements of such a theory already exist in the literature and can be found in such papers an…d monographs as [90,95,96,109,115,131,132,134,135,136,146, 163,165,169,170,182,184,214-218]. In this book, we will employ a theory that is based on quite different principles than those used previously. However, precisely one of the standard principles is left without change, the 'freezing of coefficients' principle. The first main difference in our exposition begins at the point when the 'model problem' appears. Such a model problem for differential equations and differential boundary conditions was first studied in a fundamental paper of V. A. Kondrat'ev [134]. Here also the second main difference appears, in that we consider an already given boundary value problem. In some transformations this boundary value problem was reduced to a boundary value problem with a parameter . - in a domain with smooth boundary, followed by application of the earlier results of M. S. Agranovich and M. I. Vishik. In this context some operator-function R('-) appears, and its poles prevent invertibility; iffor differential operators the function is a polynomial on A, then for pseudo differential operators this dependence on . - cannot be defined. Ongoing investigations of different model problems are being carried out with approximately this plan, both for differential and pseudodifferential boundary value problems. 192 pp. Englisch.

In particular, such problems exhibit as boundary conditions relations among values of the unknown analytic functions which have to… be evaluated at different points of the boundary. Singular integral equations with a shift are connected with such boundary value problems in a natural way. Subsequent to Riemann's work, D. Hilbert (1905), C. Haseman (1907) and T. Carleman (1932) also considered problems of this type. About 50 years ago, Soviet mathematicians began a systematic study of these topics. The first works were carried out in Tbilisi by D. Kveselava (1946-1948). Afterwards, this theory developed further in Tbilisi as well as in other Soviet scientific centers (Rostov on Don, Ka zan, Minsk, Odessa, Kishinev, Dushanbe, Novosibirsk, Baku and others). Beginning in the 1960s, some works on this subject appeared systematically in other countries, e. g. , China, Poland, Germany, Vietnam and Korea. In the last decade the geography of investigations on singular integral operators with shift expanded significantly to include such countries as the USA, Portugal and Mexico. It is no longer easy to enumerate the names of the all mathematicians who made contributions to this theory. Beginning in 1957, the author also took part in these developments. The aim was to provide a forum within which philosophers, math ematicians, logicians a…nd historians of mathematics could exchange ideas pertaining to the historical and philosophical development of proof theory. Hence the conference was called Proof Theory: History and Philosophical Significance. To quote from the conference abstract: Proof theory was developed as part of Hilberts Programme. According to Hilberts Programme one could provide mathematics with a firm and se cure foundation by formalizing all of mathematics and subsequently prove consistency of these formal systems by finitistic means. Hence proof theory was developed as a formal tool through which this goal should be fulfilled. It is well known that Hilbert's Programme in its original form was unfeasible mainly due to Gtldel's incompleteness theorems. Additionally it proved impossible to formalize all of mathematics and impossible to even prove the consistency of relatively simple formalized fragments of mathematics by finitistic methods. In spite of these problems, Gentzen showed that by extending Hilbert's proof theory it would be possible to prove the consistency of interesting formal systems, perhaps not by finitis tic methods but still by methods of minimal strength. This generalization of Hilbert's original programme has fueled modern proof theory which is a rich part of mathematical logic with many significant implications for the philosophy of mathematics. 276 pp. Englisch.

Kroto, FRSAlthough the discovery of C60 is now almost 15 years old and the extraction occurred 60 nearly ten years ago it is amazing that the range of spin-off research still seems to expand without limits. The bi…rth of the Fullerenes has spawned fascinating research programmes in almost every area of chemistry and physics and this monograph explores a particularly interesting and important area - the behaviour of these pure carbon cages in the presence of high-energy radiation. The C molecules must also be in the space 60 between the stars (albeit in quantities too small to detect at this time) as the conditions in the atmospheres of some carbon stars appear to be almost identical to the plasmas generated in the Kratschmer-Huffman system for making C60. The conditions in space 60 are very varied as it is pervaded by a plethora of high-energy particles (photons, cosmic rays, etc.) and the chapters in this book discuss, among other things, the response of C60 and various derivatives to probing by a range of high-energy particles.Various fullerenes and fullerene salts have been examined by positron annihilation techniques, revealing details of their electronic and structural properties as well as phase transition behaviour. Muons have been implanted to enable mSR techniques to probe with high sensitivity the endohedral electronic structures of fullerenes including those in superconducting systems.Mossbauer spectroscopy can give valuable information about the interactions in certain types of organometallic complexes and in particular it can reveal the degree of charge transfer in endohedral species. Nuclear irradiation/radiochemical analytical techniques have been applied resulting in information ranging widely from the stability of the fullerene cage containing endohedral metal atoms in various oxidation states to pharmaceutical studies of the distribution of fullerenes in the internal organs ofanimals.Time resolved pulsed radio lysis provides information at high sensitivity enabling micromolar concentrations to be probed e.g. C60 in water in which it is almost insoluble! Redox and rate constant measurements have given useful information on photolytically generated radical ion pairs involving a variety of fullerenes. Interesting accounts of observations involving the production of rare gas endohedral species by nuclear recoil have revealed information about the recoil mechanism.From the first moment of its discovery the unique cage structure of C60 initiated thoughts about the interesting possibility of encapsulation of atoms and molecules. One possibility that immediately suggested itself was the isolation of chemically toxic radionuclides by encapsulation in the (supposedly chemically innocuous) cage for pharmaceutical purposes. The possibility of creating cages carrying a radioactive atom inside the cage and moieties outside with molecularrecognition capabilities is a most exciting prospect and discussion is included of some important first steps aimed at achieving this fascinating breakthrough.Another problem dealt with in this monograph is the effect of elemental impurities which has, as our studies progress, become more and more a matter of concern and interest. Impurities can have important effects on the observed physical and chemical behaviour of fullerenes, especially when very sensitive probe techniques are applied.This valuable book reviews some detailed studies of fundamental properties of fullerenes, which are leading to a deeper understanding of their behaviour in the presence of high energy radiation. The information obtained already and that which will be garnered in future studies of the kind described here is an absolutely necessary prerequisite for success in applications. 224 pp. Englisch.

Rather than giving a rough overview of demographic changes in many countries, a comparison of differences in changes in family fo…rmation and fertility behaviour between Belgium and The Netherlands is interesting for various reasons. First, even though the economic and cultural differences between these countries are relatively small there is one important difference: Belgium is predominantly Catholic, whereas The Netherlands has about equal proportions of Catholics and Protestants. Second, if the Second Demographic Transition implies that there is one common pattern of change in different European countries and that differences across countries are due to the fact that countries are in a different stage of the transition process, and if it is assumed that the transition process started earlier in Protestant countries than in Catholic countries, one would expect The Netherlands to be in a further stage of the transition process than Belgium. Thus an in-depth comparison of changes in family formation and fertility behaviour between both countries may give us more insight in the question of whether there is one common transition process. The comparison of fertility and family survey-data in both countries brings us to the core question of whether there is one common explanation for differences between countries in various types of fertility and family behaviour under consideration, namely fertility regulation, the choice of living arrangement after leaving the parental home, and the labour force participation of mothers. 160 pp. Englisch.

In particular, such problems exhibit as boundary conditions relations among values of the unknown analytic functions which have to be…evaluated at different points of the boundary. Singular integral equations with a shift are connected with such boundary value problems in a natural way. Subsequent to Riemann's work, D. Hilbert (1905), C. Haseman (1907) and T. Carleman (1932) also considered problems of this type. About 50 years ago, Soviet mathematicians began a systematic study of these topics. The first works were carried out in Tbilisi by D. Kveselava (1946-1948). Afterwards, this theory developed further in Tbilisi as well as in other Soviet scientific centers (Rostov on Don, Ka zan, Minsk, Odessa, Kishinev, Dushanbe, Novosibirsk, Baku and others). Beginning in the 1960s, some works on this subject appeared systematically in other countries, e. g. , China, Poland, Germany, Vietnam and Korea. In the last decade the geography of investigations on singular integral operators with shift expanded significantly to include such countries as the USA, Portugal and Mexico. It is no longer easy to enumerate the names of the all mathematicians who made contributions to this theory. Beginning in 1957, the author also took part in these developments.
