Accordingly, the presentation is conditioned in content as well as in form by the assumption that the reader has already made an internal commitment to mathematics and is seeking not only mathematical information but also active involvement with mathematical pursuits. The general aim of what follows is to present basic mathematical concepts and techniques in familiar contexts in such a way as to illuminate the nature of mathematics as an art. Thus, the selection and organization of the material is based on considerations regarding the philosophical significance of various mathematical notions and results, their interdependence and their accessi bility. In other words, this text concentrates on displaying coherent mathe matical material meriting exceptionally careful and expansive contemplation. It should not be regarded as a reference for the most frequently used results or methods of elementary mathematics. The exposition is meant to be reasonably self-contained and to embody a growth pattern of mathematical ideas (for which no historical validity is claimed, of course). In order to avoid burying the essentials under routine technicalities, a style has been adopted that relies on the reader's active involvement somewhat more than is customary in texts for beginners. The exercises proposed at the end of each chapter are frequently extensions of the chapter content, rather than mere illustrations. I t can be used for courses at several levels, depending upon the background and ability of the students. It was written on the premise that today's good students have unexpected enthusiasm and nerve. When hard work is put to them, they work harder and ask for more. The honors course (at the University of Wisconsin) which inspired this book was, I think, more fun than the book itself. And better. But then there is acting in teaching, and a typewriter is a poor substitute for an audience. The spontaneous, creative disorder that characterizes an exciting course becomes silly in a book. To write, one must cut and dry. Yet, I hope enough of the spontaneity, enough of the spirit of that course, is left to enable those using the book to create exciting courses of their own. Exercises in this book are not designed for drill. They are designed to clarify the meanings of the theorems, to force an understanding of the proofs, and to call attention to points in a proof that might otherwise be overlooked. The exercises, therefore, are a real part of the theory, not a collection of side issues, and as such nearly all of them are to be done. He was also instrumental in making a selection\* which would, in general, be on the same level as my book The Exact Sciences in Antiquity. It may also provide a general background for my more technical History of Ancient Mathematical Astronomy and for my edition of Astronomi cal Cuneiform Texts. Several of these republished articles were written because I wanted to put to rest well-entrenched historical myths which could not withstand close scrutiny of the sources. Examples are the supposed astronomical origin of the Egyptian calendar (see [9]), the discovery of precession by the Babylonians [16], and the 'simplification' of the Ptolemaic system in Copernicus' De Revolutionibus [40]. In all of my work I have striven to present as accurately as I could what the original sources reveal (which is often very different from the received view). It gives the results obtained by them (and some by Weil) plication in the higher dimensional case, generalizing in a non-trivial way the method of Deuring for elliptic curves, by reduction mod p. Partly through the work of Shimura himself (cf. [Sh 1] [Sh 2], and [Sh 5]), and some others (Serre, Tate, Kubota, Ribet, Deligne etc.) it is possible today to make a more snappy and extensive presentation of the fundamental results than was possible in 1961. Several persons have found my lecture notes on this subject useful to them, and so I have decided to publish this short book to make them more widely available. Readers acquainted with the standard theory of abelian varieties, and who wish to get rapidly an idea of the fundamental facts of complex multi plication, are advised to look first at the two main theorems, Chapter 3, 6 and Chapter 4, 1, as well as the rest of Chapter 4.
