As the… reader can see, there has been significant advancement in our understanding of the fijnctions of these proteins in the past ten years since CtBPl was cloned in our laboratory. Genetic and biochemical studies with Drosophila provided the critical evidence to show that dCtBP is a transcriptional CO repressor. Genetic studies with mutant mice have established that these proteins are essential for animal development. The CtBP family proteins are unique in several aspects. They were the first among proteins containing a metabolic enzyme fold to be implicated in transcriptional regulation. The vertebrate CtBPs exhibit distinct nuclear and cytosolic activities. The crystal struaures of CtBPl and molecular modeling studies have illuminated the mo lecular basis of its dual activity and the interaction with target peptides. The organization of the vertebrate CtBP2 gene has provided a novel example of genomic consolidation indicating how a single gene could code for two di verse proteins. For such traffic, the allocation of static fixed-bandwidth circuits may lead to the over-provisioning of bandwidth resources in order to meet QoS requirements. Optical burst switching (OBS) is a promising new technique which attempts to address the problem of efficiently allocating resources for bursty traffic. In OBS, incoming data is assembled into bursts at the edges of the network, and when the burst is ready to be sent, resources in the network are reserved only for the duration of the burst. The reservation of resources is typically made by an out-of-band one-way control message which precedes the burst by some offset time. By reserving resources only for the duration of the burst, a greater degree of utilization may be achieved in the network. This book provides an overview of optical burst switching. Design and research issues involved in the development of OBS networks are discussed, and approaches to providing QoS in OBS networks are presented. Ramon was one of the firsts to find and recognize the importance of calci- activated potassium channels and to begin a detailed study of channel properties. In fa…ct, breast cancer incidence rates have shown little change in the 1990s, while breast cancer death rates have been declining about 2percentperyearsince1990[Riesetal. ,1999]. Modernmammographyisrelieduponmost often for breast cancer screening. Mammograms can detect most breast cancers, but they miss some. Its accuracy and sensitivity are age and breast density dependent. For example, the false negative rate is about 25% for women under age 50, with invasive breast cancer [Kerlikowske et al. , 1996; 1997]. It reduces to 10% for women more than 50 years of age. Although the amount of radiation exposure during mammography is minimal - about the same as receiving a dental x-ray, the radiation from mammograms can cause additional breast cancer deaths [Feig, 1996; NIH, 1997].
