Neuware -The idea for this book was developed in the seminar on problems of con tinuum mechanics, which has been active for more than twelve years at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University, Prague. This seminar has been pursuing recent directions in the development of mathe matical applications in physics; especially in continuum mechanics, and in technology. It has regularly been attended by upper division and graduate students, faculty, and scientists and researchers from various institutions from Prague and elsewhere. These seminar participants decided to publish in a self-contained monograph the results of their individual and collective efforts in developing applications for the theory of variational inequalities, which is currently a rapidly growing branch of modern analysis. The theory of variational inequalities is a relatively young mathematical discipline. Apparently, one of the main bases for its development was the paper by G. Fichera (1964) on the solution of the Signorini problem in the theory of elasticity. Later, J. L. Lions and G. Stampacchia (1967) laid the foundations of the theory itself. Time-dependent inequalities have primarily been treated in works of J. L. Lions and H. Bnlzis. The diverse applications of the variational in equalities theory are the topics of the well-known monograph by G. Du vaut and J. L. Neuware -It is an honor to be asked to write a foreword to this book, for I believe that it and other books to follow will eventually lead to a dramatic change in the current statistics curriculum in our universities. I spent the 1975-76 academic year at Florida State University in Tallahassee. My purpose was to complete a book on Statistical Reliability Theory with Frank Proschan. At the time, I was working on total time on test processes. At the same time, I started attending lectures by Dev Basu on statistical inference. It was Lehmann's hypothesis testing course and Lehmann's book was the text. However, I noticed something strange - Basu never opened the book. He was obviously not following it. Instead, he was giving a very elegant, measure theoretic treatment of the concepts of sufficiency, ancillarity, and invariance. He was interested in the concept of information - what it meant. - how it fitted in with contemporary statistics. As he looked at the fundamental ideas, the logic behind their use seemed to evaporate. I was shocked. I didn't like priors. I didn't like Bayesian statistics. But after the smoke had cleared, that was all that was left. Basu loves counterexamples. He is like an art critic in the field of statistical inference. Augmenting this interest has been the broader availability of supercomputers capable of handling the tremendous computational demands of a typical reseIVoir simulator. The field of reseIVoir simulation incorporates several major facets of applied mathematics. First, in view of the varieyt and complexity of the processes encoun tered, it is imperative that the modeler adopt a systematic approach to establishing the equations governing reseIVoir flows. Second, the mathematical structure of these flow equations needs to be carefully analyzed in order to develop appropriate and efficient numerical methods for their solution. Third, since some aspects of the discretized flow equations are typically stiff, one must develop efficient schemes for solving large sparse systems of linear equations. This monograph has three parts, each devoted to one of these three aspects of reseIVoir modeling. The text grew out of a set of lectures presented by the authors in the autumn of 1986 at the IBM Scientific Center in Bergen, Norway. We feel that it is only appropriate to caution the reader that many of the ideas that we present in this monograph do not reflect standard approaches in petroleum reseIVoir simulation. This meeting continued in the spirit of a previous workshop which took place in Feldafing (FRG), March 1985. Photosynthetic reaction centers are intrinsic membrane proteins which, by performing a photoinduced transmembrane charge separation, are responsible for the conversion and storage of solar energy. Since the pioneering work of Reed and Clayton (1968) on the isolation of the reaction center from photosynthetic bacteria, optical spectroscopy with polarized light has been one of the main tools used to investigate the geometrical arrangement of the various chromophores in these systems. The recent elucidation by X-ray crystallography of the structure of several bacterial reaction centers, a breakthrough initiated by Michel and Deisenhofer, has provided us with the atomic coordinates of the pigments and some details about their interactions with neighboring aminoacid residues. This essential step has given a large impetus both to experimentalists and to theoreticians who are now attempting to relate the X-ray structural model to the optical properties of the reaction center and ultimately to its primary biological function. 460 pp. Englisch.
