Neuware - The present volume collects some of the talks given at the Bertrand Russell Colloquium on Exact Philosophy, attached to the McGill University Foundations and Philosophy of Science Unit. It also includes a paper, on Bertrand Russell's method of philosophizing, read at the memorial symposium… held at Sir Gorge Williams University shortly after the philosopher's death. All the papers appear here for the first time. Unlike many a philosophy of science anthology, this one is not center ed on the philosophy of physics. In fact the papers deal with conceptual and, in particular, philosophical problems that pop up in almost every one of the provinces of the vast territory constituted by the foundations, meth odology and philosophy of science. A couple of border territories which are in the process of being infiltrated have been added for good measure. The inclusion of papers in the philosophy of formal science and in the philosophies of physics and of biology, in a volume belonging to a series devoted to the philosophy and methodology of the social and behavioral sciences, should raise no eyebrows. Because the sciences of man make use of logic and mathematics, they are interested in questions such as whether the formal sciences have anything to do with reality (rather than with our theories about reality) and whether or not logic has kept up with the practice of mathematicians. These two problems are tackled in Part II, on the philosophy of formal science.

The first two volumes of the treatise, 'Fondement de la Chimie Tbeorique' and 'Structure Electrique des Molecules' were, like this third volume, originally published by Gauthier-Villars; Pergamon published the English translations of these two volumes. I am grateful to D. Reidel Publishing Company for translating the third volume of the treatise into English. Readers familiar with English rather than French now have access to the complete series. This treatise is a reflection of the courses I taught at the Sorbonne from 1950 until 1967 to students in their second cycle (3rd and 4th year) and third cycle (5th and 6th year) working towards a doctorate in this particular field. It is based on the reading of over a thousand articles, and is intended for students as well as for physical chemists, and chemists, research workers and engineers taking an interest in quantum chemistry for its own sake or for its application in industry, pharmacology and the life sciences. Reidel's initiative is particularly valuable because in my opinion Quantum Theory of Chemical Reactivity is the most important of the three volumes of the treatise. Doubtless for this reason only the third volume was published in Japanese by Baifukan, thanks to Professors Hayashi and Sohma. 176 pp. Englisch.

Three examples of such models are investigated in Chapters VI, VII, and VIII; the most important of these,…the class of constructible sets, leads to G6del's result that the axiom of choice and the continuum hypothesis are consistent with the rest of set theory [1]I. The text thus constitutes an introduction to the results of P. Cohen concerning the independence of these axioms [2], and to many other relative consistency proofs obtained later by Cohen's methods. Chapters I and II introduce the axioms of set theory, and develop such parts of the theory as are indispensable for every relative consistency proof; the method of recursive definition on the ordinals being an import ant case in point. The committee initiated the publication of a collection of studies dealing with the effect that Copernicus' theory has had on scientific developments in centres of learning all over the world. An Editorial Board, consisting of J. Dobrzycki (Warsaw), J. R. Ravetz (Leeds), H. Sandblad (Goteborg) and B. Sticker (Hamburg), was nominated. We found that our initiative aroused a lively interest among Copernicus scholars; the present volume, with 11 articles by authors from nine American, Asian and European countries, contains the result of their research. It appears in the series 'Studia Coper nicana' by agreement with the Polish Academy of Science, and we hope to publish a number of other contributions in a subsequent volume. We are happy to say that our efforts have been fruitful and that this volume presents not only several in-depth studies, but also a more general survey of the rules governing the evolution of science, rules set within the framework of Copernicus' theory as it developed among various nations and in various scientific institutions over the centuries. Unter Systemanalyse soll hier folgendes methodische Vor gehen verstanden werden: Die elektrische Maschine als reales physikalisc…hes Sy stem wird mit Hilfe vereinfachender Annahmen in ein physikalisches Modell uber fUhrt, dessen Verhalten einer ubersichtlichen mathematischen Beschreibung zu ganglich sein soll. Die Systemparameter des physikalischen Modells, insbesondere die Induktivitaten, mussen aus dessen Konstruktionsdaten und den Materialeigen schaften berechnet werden konnen. Da die meisten Maschinen und damit auch die Maschinenmodelle bezuglich ihres Aufbaus bestimmte Symmetrieeigenschaften be sitzen, die sich auch auf die Struktur ihrer Systemparameter auswirken, endet die Systemanalyse nicht mit der direkten Beschreibung des Modells durch das sog. ma thema~ische Originalsystem. Wegen der Symmetrieeigenschaften der Systempara meter kann man das Originalsystem mit Hilfe eines mathematischen Formalismus in ein einfacheres mathematisches System transformieren. Dieses Verfahren fUhrt bei der Berechnung des stationiiren und des dynamischen Betriebsverhaltens von Drehstrommaschinen zu einer starken Reduktion des mathematischen Aufwands. Die im transformierten System auftretenden Variablen sind, wie am Begriff des Strom-Raumzeigers demonstriert wird, auch einer direkten physikalischen Deu tung zuganglich. Besonderer Wert wird auf die methodischen Zusammenhange und die Systematik der Darstellung gelegt. Die Berechnung der Systemparameter wird auf wenige wichtige vorkommende Falle beschrankt. Da es sich urn eine Einfuhrung in die Systemanalyse elektrischer Maschinen handelt, wurden im Interesse einer gu ten Verstandlichkeit verhiiltnismal3ig einfache Modelle der wichtigsten Maschinen typen ausgewiihlt. 228 pp. Deutsch.

Die ersten acht Kapitel sind aus einer Vorlesung gleichen Tite…ls entstanden, die ich seit einigen lahren im Rahmen des Informatikstudiums an der Technischen Universitiit Miinchen halte. Der Stoff des letzten Kapitels entstammt aus einer Spezialvorlesung iiber Peri pheriegeriite. Die Darstellung geht aus von den funktionellen Eigenschaf ten heute zur Verfiigung stehender Bauelemente. Zuniichst wird gezeigt, wie aus diesen einfache Baugruppen hergestellt werden konnen. Nach dieser Vorbereitung kann im Kapitel 3 ausfUhr lich auf den Aufbau verschiedener Versionen arithmetischer Ver kniipfungseinheiten eingegangen werden. Nahezu aile diese Ope rationen besitzen eine 'Feinstruktur', d. h. , sie sind aus einer Reihe von Elementaroperationen aufgebaut. Das folgende Ka pitel demonstriert, wie ein Schaltwerk, das die Steuerung des Ablaufs dieser Elementaroperationen durchfiihren solI, aufzu bauen ist. Insbesondere wird gezeigt, daB es die Einfiihrung be sonderer Schnell speicher, in denen die Art der jeweiligen Ab liiufe in Form von Mikroprogrammen gespeichert sind, ermog licht, auch auf dieser untersten Ebene einer Rechenanlage den Vorteil der Flexibilitiit einer Programmsteuerung zu niitzen. Ein besonderes Kapitel ist dem Befehlswerk gewidmet; hier werden insbesondere die einzelnen Modifikationsarten, die auf Maschinenbefehle angewandt werden, von der Programmierungs seite her begriindet, und Vorschliige fUr deren Realisierung ge geben.
