Although early attempts at in…serting ultrasound transducers in natural cavities of the body can be traced back more than two decades, only in the past few years has technology allowed the development and commercialization of effective, easy-to-use endosono scopic probes. Because the transducer can be placed in direct contact with or close to lesions, high frequencies (up to ~2 MHz) can be used, yielding cross-sectional images of unsurpassed resolution. The availability of specially designed intracorporeal probes for specific natural cavities that are routinely explored by conventional (optical) endoscopy or palpation has significantly expanded the diagnostic applications of sonography. Transrectal and transvaginal examinations are now performed routinely in many institutions, and virtually all sonographic equipment manufac turers have in their line of products at least one endorectal and one endovaginal transducer. Most endosonoscopic probes connect to existing scanners, and for radiology departments, the invest ment for transrectal or transvaginal scanning will usually be limited to the purchase of the specific probe. In this book, clinical applications of endosonography (excluding transesophageal echocardio graphy) are covered by European and North American experts. Current equipment and techniques of examination are described in detail to help newcomers get started in the field of endosonography.

The field of membranes and membrane cells was well represented by some 15 papers, reflecting the importance of membrane technology to the future of the industry. However, papers relating to the more traditional mercury and diaphragm cell technologies were also presented, together with a paper concerned with sodium chlorate manufacture. Because some cancers can now be cured with chemotherapy as a singular modality, this therapy can no longer be viewed as simply a palliative contribution. Chemotherapy has assumed an important rol…e as an adjuvant to other modalities, including both surgery and radiation therapy. For some tumors, the primary application of chemotherapy in a combined modality approach to curative therapy has resulted in the application of less radical surgery while achieving substantial of relatively rare tumors such as cure rates. Nonetheless, with the exception childhood tumors, hematologic malignancies, and testicular cancer, the effec tiveness of chemotherapy in most tumors is severely limited. At the cellular level, greater understanding of the specific mechanism of tumor cell killing and of the phenomenon of drug resistance are elusive, critical ingredients in the improvement of effectiveness in cancer chemotherapy. Prolonging the exposure time of the tumor cell to drugs is a concept that was addressed in the early phases of the development of chemotherapy. How ever, technological limitations inhibited the broader application of chemother apy by infusion until recent years. Also, the convenience of intermittent ther apy on an outpatient basis, with the predominant theory of drug effect based on a dose response as well as the proven effectiveness of this schedule in some tumors, has slowed the process of subjecting infusion chemotherapy to the rigors of clinical trials.

Since its inception the focus of the International Conference on Magnet Technology has gradually shifted to superconducting magnets. Now almost all papers are related to superconductivity. The 11th International Conference on Magnet Technology (MT-11) was organized by the combined efforts of the Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan, the Association for Promotion of Electrical, Electronic and Information Engineering, and the Tokyo Section of the IEEE. The Conference was held at the Tsukuba University Hall, Tsukuba, Japan, from 28 August to 1 September 1989, courtesy ofthe University ofTsukuba. The Tsukuba University Hall was large enough to host invited talks, parallel sessions, poster sessions and industrial exhibitions. 461 participants from 19 countries registered for MT-ll, and 280 invited and contributed papers were presented. The papers were reviewed not only by the Program Committee but also by foreign participants. Working sessions and social events were characterized by a truly international atmo sphere. Scientific as well as cultural excursions were organized so that foreign visitors could experience the spirit of modern Japan. 26 companies, of which 8 were from Western countries, participated in the industrial exhibition which featured diverse products and services of interest to the magnet community.

Major progress in coronal wave studies has be…en achieved thanks to the combination of high-precision multi-wavelength observations with spaceborne and ground-based facilities, elaborated theory of the interaction of MHD waves with plasma non-uniformities, state-of-the-art numerical simulations, and novel data analysis techniques. It has allowed the research community to reach a new look at the role played by MHD wave processes in the enigmatic phenomena of coronal plasma heating and wind acceleration as well as powerful energy releases such as flares and coronal mass ejections. In addition, the waves are intensively used as natural probes in the remote diagnostics of the coronal plasma parameters and physical processes operating in solar and stellar coronae via the method of MHD seismology. Individual chapters cover recent cutting-edge results obtained on the analysis and theoretical modelling of several most intensively studied coronal MHD wave phenomena, namely, kink and sausage oscillations of coronal loops and other field-aligned plasma structures, plus running and standing slow magnetoacoustic waves. A dedicated chapter assesses the reliability of proposed theoretical mechanisms for heating of the coronal plasma by MHD waves. Another chapter summarizes the current state of our understanding of the physical mechanisms and observational properties of quasi-periodic pulsations in solar flares, considers their analogy with similar processes detected in stellar flares, and thus establishes solid ground for the further exploitation of the solar-stellar analogy. An important discussion of novel data analysis techniques designed recently for MHD seismology applications is presented in a devoted chapter. The direction of future advances in the designated research areas are discussed.The book is a spin-off from the Topical Collection 'Oscillatory Processes in Solar and Stellar Coronae' of the journal Space Science Reviews.

The discovery by Henze in 1911 that certain marine ascidians accumulate the metal in their blood cells in unusually large quantities has done much… to stimulate research on the role of vanadium in biology. In the intervening years, a large number of studies have been carried out to investigate the toxicity of vanadium in higher animals and to determine whether it is an essential trace element. That vanadium is a required element for a few selected organisms is now well established. Whether vanadium is essential for humans remains unclear although evidence increasingly suggests that it probably is. The discovery by Cantley in 1977 that vanadate is a potent inhibitor of ATPases lead to numerous studies of the inhibitory and stimulatory effects of vanadium on phosphate metabolizing enzymes. As a consequence vanadates are now routinely used as probes to investigate the mechanisms of such enzymes. Our understanding of vanadium in these systems has been further enhanced by the work of Tracy and Gresser which has shown striking parallels between the chemistry of vanadates and phosphates and their biological compounds. The observation by Shechter and Karlish, and Dubyak and Kleinzeller in 1980 that vanadate is an insulin mimetic agent has opened a new area of research dealing with the hormonal effects of vanadium. The first vanadium containing enzyme, a bromoperoxidase from the marine alga Ascophyllum nodosum, was isolated in 1984 by Viltner.

Natural ecosystems are currently sequestering carbon and it is economically feasible to manage existing and additional terrestrial (forest, soil, saline land) and aquatic (coastal, wetland and ocean) ecosystems to substantially increase the level of carbon storage. The prospect of managing natural systems to absorb additional carbon should begin to change the mindset under which scientists, policy makers and society deal with the issue of further greenhouse gas increases.
