Neuware - The general discussions of the roles of photometric and spectroscopic classification at Cordoba in 1971 (lAU Symposium No. 50), and of the calibration of classification indices at Geneva in 1972 (IAU Symposium No. 54), revealed clearly the steadily in creasing importance of abundance param…eters. The multipliCity of these, however, raised so many new problems that it was logical that the 1975 meeting at Lausanne should be concerned with ways in which differences in abundance affect both spectral types and photometric indices. Commissions 29 and 36 joined with Commission 45 in sponsoring this Symposium. Since the date of the meeting came shortly after the formal retirement of Professor William W. Morgan from the University of Chicago, it was quickly agreed that this meeting should be dedicated to him in recognition of his unique contributions to spectral classification. In the opening paper of the Symposium Dr. Bengt Stromgren has summarized these. To his remarks we should add only that it was about 1940 that Morgan first distinguished the group of G- and K-type stars with weak CN bands and metallic lines - stars which have since been recognized as having the abundance of all metals relative to hydrogen much lower than in stars of the solar population. Spectra of two of these, HD 81192 (Boss 2527) and 8 Lep, were later shown as examples of the group in the Yerkes Atlas of 1943.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Wittgenstein's remarks on mathematics have not received the recogni tion they deserve; they have for the most part been either ignored, or dismissed as unworthy of the author of the Tractatus and the I nvestiga tions. This is unfor…tunate, I believe, and not at all fair, for these remarks are not only enjoyable reading, as even the harshest critics have con ceded, but also a rich and genuine source of insight into the nature of mathematics. It is perhaps the fact that they are more suggestive than systematic which has put so many people off; there is nothing here of formal derivation and very little attempt even at sustained and organized argumentation. The remarks are fragmentary and often obscure, if one does not recognize the point at which they are directed. Nevertheless, there is much here that is good, and even a fairly system atic and coherent account of mathematics. What I have tried to do in the following pages is to reconstruct the system behind the often rather disconnected commentary, and to show that when the theory emerges, most of the harsh criticism which has been directed against these re marks is seen to be without foundation. This is meant to be a sym pathetic account of Wittgenstein's views on mathematics, and I hope that it will at least contribute to a further reading and reassessment of his contributions to the philosophy of mathematics. 140 pp. Englisch.

As in the first edition and for the same reasons, we have resisted the temptation to follow the theory in directions that deal with uncountable state spaces or continuous time. A section entitled Additional References complements the Additional Notes. J. W. Pitman pointed out an error in Theorem 9-53 of the first edition, which we have corrected. More detail about the correction appears in the Additional Notes. Aside from this change, we have left intact the text of the first eleven chapters. Geiger. The aim of these notes is to provtde a summary and concise introduction to elementary molecular orbital theory, with an emphasis on semiempirical methods. Within the last decade the development and refinement of ab initio computations has tended to overshadow the usefulness of semiempirical methods. However, both approaches have their justification. Ab initio methods are designed for accurate predictions, at the expense of greater computational labor. The aim of semiempirical methods mainly lies in a semiquantitative classification of electronic pro perties and in the search for regularities within given classes of larger molecules. The reader is supposed to have had some previous basic instruc tion in quantum mechanics, such as is now offered in many uni versities to chemists in their third or fourth year of study. I am grateful to those who have encouraged me to publish… these lec tures or have contributed to them by their suggestions. In particular, I wish to thank Professor J. Keller of the Univer sidad Nacional Autonoma in Mexico, Professor H. Labhart and Professor H. Fischer of the University of Zurich, as well as my former students Dr. J. Kuhn, Dr. W. Hug and Dr. R. Geiger. The aim of these notes is to provtde a summary and concise introduction to elementary molecular orbital theory, with an emphasis on semiempirical methods. Within the last decade the development and refinement of ab initio computations has tended to overshadow the usefulness of semiempirical methods. However, both approaches have their justification. Ab initio methods are designed for accurate predictions, at the expense of greater computational labor. The aim of semiempirical methods mainly lies in a semiquantitative classification of electronic pro perties and in the search for regularities within given classes of larger molecules. The reader is supposed to have had some previous basic instruc tion in quantum mechanics, such as is now offered in many uni versities to chemists in their third or fourth year of study. The bibliography should encourage the reader to consult other texts, in particular also selected publications in scientific journals. 116 pp. Englisch.

A number of observations on function in the intact kidney can be made through the microscope. We can observe the flow of blood in the renal microcirculation on the cortical surface. We can identify proximal and distal tubules, and measure their widths. We can follow the flow of tubular fluid with the use of dyes. We can watch fluid reabsorption in tubular segments isolated by oil droplets. With photography, these observations can be recorded and quantitated. In this monograph, we will survey the methods and results of in vivo microscopy of the kidney cortex. We will consider the advantages and limitations of these methods, and discuss their contributions to our understanding of kidney physiology. A general discussion of kidney function may be found in Ref. [127]. The reader is also referred to several recent reviews and books on the kidney [28, 41, 43, 66, 72a, 84, 95, 120, 128, 136, 140, 194, 203, 204, 210, 216]. 68 pp. Englisch.

To me it has bee…n of interest as an orientation in a world of traditional German thinking, best known from Goethe's natural philosophy of perceptible 'Ur bilder', which perhaps in English could be rendered descriptively by calling it an inner vision of further irre ducible totalities. It is in contemporary language a kind of intuitive 'holistic' insight which represents understanding different from that of natural science. The latter is devoted to the study of causal chains, is largely experimental and in its aim ultimately 'reduc tionist' -to use another modern term. Goethe's approach is reincarnated in the 'Wesenslehre' of the late Ludwig Klages (1872-1956) and in the thinking of Carl Gustav Caruso To Klages the perceived image alone is the meaning of everything in this world and in this sense he is the advocate of a psychological phenom enology that is an end in itself. Originally trained as a chemist Klages soon turned to philosophy and de veloped a system of concepts supposed to give a deeper insight into the essence of life than did the endless causal chains of natural science. Blasius makes much use of the concepts of this philosopher, in particular his ideas on 'polarities'. 220 pp. Englisch.

The multipliCity of these, however, raised so many new problems that it was logical that the 1975 meeting at Lausanne should be concerned with ways in which differences in abundance affect both spectral types and photometric indices. Commissions 29 and 36 joined with Commission 45 in sponsoring this Symposium. Since the date of the meeting came shortly after the formal retirement of Professor William W. Morgan from the University of Chicago, it was quickly agreed that this meeting should be dedicated to him in recognition of his unique contributions to spectral classification. In the opening paper of the Symposium Dr. Bengt Stromgren has summarized these. To his remarks we should add only that it was about 1940 that Morgan first distinguished the group of G- and K-type stars with weak CN bands and metallic lines - stars which have since been recognized as having the abundance of all metals relative to hydrogen much lower than in stars of the solar population. Spectra of two of these, HD 81192 (Boss 2527) and 8 Lep, were later shown as examples of the group in the Yerkes Atlas of 1943. 296 pp. Englisch.

We show that every consequence relation is complete for a canonical semantics. We define the notion of one semantics being Dian in another and study the basic properties of this notion.
