The book is based on lecture courses given by the authors to second and third year honours studen…ts in the Electronics Department of Southampton University, England. Some elementary knowledge of physics, circuit theory, and vector methods is assumed. The book deals almost exc1u sively with the theoretical aspects, but references are given to experi mental work. The first two chapters discuss c1assical atomic theory and quantum mechanical applications to electron energy levels in atoms, in particular the hydrogen atom, and in one-dimensional crystalline solids leading to the distinctions between metals, insulators, and semiconductors. Chapter 3 deals with statistical mechanics in some detail, so that the reader can appreciate the historical background leading to the Fermi Dirac statistics for electrons in metals and semiconductors, and in chapter 4 these statistics are applied to determine the current carrier density in various types of semiconductor. Equations for drift and diffusion currents are obtained in chapter 5, and the results applied to uiliform and graded impurity semiconductors in chapter 6. Current flow across p-n junctions is analysed in chapter 7, and the p-n-p transistor theory is developed in chapter 8. The energy is released by the process known as oxidation (burning), in which food is broken down and combined with oxygen to release all the energy which is required. Animals therefore obviously need a supply of food and a supply of oxygen. Since the animal body is largely made up of water, they need a supply of water as well. Our main concern will be the devel…opment of a unified theory that encompasses these techniques in one comprehensive framework. Consequently we will focus on certain funda mental and intrinsic relations between these methods of model construction. Extensive applications will not be treated here. This text is a continuation of our book, 'I ntroduction to Axiomatic Set Theory,' Springer-Verlag, 1971; indeed the two texts were originally planned as a single volume. The content of this volume is essentially that of a course taught by the first author at the University of Illinois in the spring of 1969. From the first author's lectures, a first draft was prepared by Klaus Gloede with the assistance of Donald Pelletier and the second author. This draft was then rcvised by the first author assisted by Hisao Tanaka. The introductory material was prepared by the second author who was also responsible for the general style of exposition throughout the text. We have inc1uded in the introductory material al1 the results from Boolean algebra and topology that we need. When notation from our first volume is introduced, it is accompanied with a deflnition, usually in a footnote. In contrast to the term 'pediatrics,' the word 'pedo logy' was used to refer to the physiology of the child, because although the physiological development of the child is intimately associated with disturbances of body functions, both are different from experience with adults. Pedology is more comprehensive than physiology, in that it covers both the physiological and psychological development of the normal child. Favorable response to the above-mentioned book stimulated the project of documenting further progress in pedology at certain intervals, especially by authors who themselves had contributed substantially to these advances. In 1965 and 1968, respectively, two volumes under the title Fortschritte der Pado logie were published by Springer-Verlag-Berlin-Heidelberg-New York. Neuware -This text deals with three basic techniques for constructing models of Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory: relative constructibility, Cohen's forcing, and Scott-Solovay's method of Boolean valued models. Our main concern will be the developme…nt of a unified theory that encompasses these techniques in one comprehensive framework. Consequently we will focus on certain funda mental and intrinsic relations between these methods of model construction. Extensive applications will not be treated here. This text is a continuation of our book, 'I ntroduction to Axiomatic Set Theory,' Springer-Verlag, 1971; indeed the two texts were originally planned as a single volume. The content of this volume is essentially that of a course taught by the first author at the University of Illinois in the spring of 1969. From the first author's lectures, a first draft was prepared by Klaus Gloede with the assistance of Donald Pelletier and the second author. This draft was then rcvised by the first author assisted by Hisao Tanaka. The introductory material was prepared by the second author who was also responsible for the general style of exposition throughout the text. We have inc1uded in the introductory material al1 the results from Boolean algebra and topology that we need. When notation from our first volume is introduced, it is accompanied with a deflnition, usually in a footnote. This necessitates an estimate of the… immediate and long-term performance of the surface or subsurface opening or foundation, whichever the case may be. This in turn requires a quantitative estimate of those physical and mechanical properties of the rock mass which govern its strength, permeability and deformation charac teristics. To a lesser or greater extent, depending upon the type of engineer ing structure considered, these properties are a function of the 1) attitude, 2) geometry and 3) spatial distribution of the joints and other discontinuities in the mass. All three factors can be determined, since the joints are detect able features whose characteristics can be quantitatively measured and described. Joints are universally present in rock masses and have strength, per meability and deformational characteristics appreciably different from those of the intact rock. Depending upon the origin of the joints sets, their characteristics can vary greatly. Not only can the average spacing between joints vary within wide limits, but the nature and degree of joint infilling material, physical characteristics of their planes and their degree of develop ment can be vastly different. Because of variations in these properties one joint set can have very different effects than another on, for example, shear characteristics.
