This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Considering the placenta from the functional point of view as an exchange organ be tween mother and foetus, it is noteworthy that placentas of all types have a common structural principle in that all placentas have structures enlar…ging the surface area avail able for exchange, as is also the case with other organs with similar functions, such as the lungs, kidneys and intestine. It may therefore be assumed that a quantitative rela tionship must exist between the structure of the placenta and its function. Accurate information on this relationship could contribute to better understanding of the pla centa and of its function. The study of this relationship requires quantitative physio logical and morphological data. Detailed data on quantitative morphology (morphometry) are available mainly for the human placenta. Even these data, however, are rather sparse as far as the early sta ges of development are concerned, because most-studies relate to full term placentas (see Aherne, 1975; Bender et al. , 1974; Laga et aI. , 1973; Geissler et aI. , 1972; Baur, 1972; Cattoor, 1967; Aherne and Dunnill, 1966). We know of only a few morphomet ric studies concerned with placentas of other animal species. These studies relate to in vestigations on the development of the placenta of sheep (Stegeman, 1974) and of cat tle (Baur, 1972), and measurements carried out on full term placentas of the guinea pig (Millier et aI. , 1967) and on full term placentas of various other species (Baur, 1973). 72 pp. Englisch.

GENERAL PLAN OF THE BOOK Basic scientific research is directed towards the goals of increasing our knowledge of the wor1d and our understanding of the wor1d. Knowledge increases through the discovery and confirmation of facts and laws. Understanding results from the explanation of known facts and laws, and through the formulation of general, systematic theories. Other things being equal, we tend to feeI that our understanding of a c1ass of phenomena increases as we develop increasingly general and intuitively unified theories of that c1ass of phenomena. It is therefore natural to consider the possibility of one very general, unified theory which, at least in principle, governs all known phenomena. The dream of obtaining such a theory, and the understanding that it would provide, has motivated an enormous amount of research by both scientists and philosophers. 204 pp. Englisch.

On the other hand, no ot…her book on the subject seems to have appeared and we hope this paperback edition will be of some use to a younger generation - if not for another twenty years, at least until someone else has the patience to write a new book. Although we have added no new material we have corrected some misprints. We have added new references only where they correct actual errors. We are grateful to Drs. G. Feinberg, M. Inokuti, Y. Kim, and A. Petermann for pointing out errors.Nearly all of this book is taken from an article prepared for a volume of the Encyclopedia of Physics. The last ten years have witnessed a tremendous outburst of activity both in relatively new fields such as Coding Theory and the Theory of Matroids as well as in' more time honored endeavors such as Generating Functions and the Inver sion Calculus. Although the number of text books on these subjects is slowly increasing, there is also a great need for up-to-date surveys of the main lines of research designed to aid the beginner and serve as a reference for the expert. It was the aim of the Advanced Study Institute 'Higher Combinatorics' in Berlin, 1976, to help fulfill this need. There were five sections: I. Counting Theory, II. Combinatorial Set Theory and Order Theory, III. Matroids, IV. Designs and V. Groups and Coding Theory, with three principal lecturers in each section. Expanded versions of most lectures form the contents of this book. The Institute was designed to offer, especially to young researchers, a comprehen sive picture of the most interesting developments currently under way. We are presenting these results at the Advanced Study Institute in order to illustrate some ac…tual applications for such processing and to point out some of the practical considerations which arise in real systems. In particular, the paper concerns the problems which arise when the individual sensor elements have a complicated directivity pattern themselves. This is a common phenomenon in active systems where the receiving sensors are complex resonant structures and are housed in a dome or towed body presenting various baffling and diffraction effects. Most treatments of array processing consider ideal elements which have well behaved directivity properties and are transparent to the field. The results of this paper show that where these properties are not met, careful in situ array measurements are required, and even with such measurements practical array gains may not be as good as predictions based on ideal sensors. 404 pp. Englisch.
