The aim of the ASI was to present both aspects of the subject matter and to foster interaction between the scientists working in these important areas of theoretical physics and theoretical chemistry. The quantum-mechanical part was mostly based on the operator-algebraic formulation of quantum mechanics and comprised quantum statistics of infinite systems with special em phasis on macroscopic observables, equilibrium conditions, irreversibility on the one hand, symmetry breaking for molecules in the radiation field and macroscopic quantum phenomena in the theory of superconductivity (BCS-theory) on the other hand. In addition, phase-space methods for many-body systems were also presented. Statistical physics was the main topic in the other lectures of the School; much emphasis was put on the statistical features of macros copic ('large') systems, the lectures dealt with mass and energy transport im polymers, in gels and in microemulsions, with aggregation and growth phenomena, with relaxation in complex, correlated systems, with conduction and optical properties of polymers, and with the means of describing disordered systems, above all fractals and related hierarchical models.

Virus precursors in the form of nucleic acids or antigens have consistently been associated with certain neoplasias. However, the role of t…hese virus-specified precursors in etiology remains obscure. Recent studies of virus-associated neo plasias have led to advances in molecular techniques, which have yielded increas ingly sensitive assays for detection of virus-specific nucleic acids, and which have enabled the disruption of virus particles without concomitant loss in antigenicity of the components. These procedures have, in turn, resulted in molecular probes that allow more definitive evaluation of the host response to its virus and to the tumor cell with which the virus or its precursors are associated. Evaluations of the immune response and status of the host have provided important informa tion about carcinogenesis and the tools for seroepidemiological studies of a variety of cancers. These seroepidemiological studies have demonstrated that several human cancers, e. g. , Burkitt's lymphoma and nasopharyngeal carcinoma, are probably virus-induced, and that antibodies that are diagnostic and prog nostic for these diseases are detectable. The conclusion that feline leukemia is a disease transmitted horizontally by a virus resulted primarily from immunologi cal experiments.

Less well known, in contrast, is the effect this group of substances has on the kidneys, both on kidney cells and the blood flow…through the kidneys. This effect was the subject of a workshop we organized in Tiibingen in June 1986. Different groups studied the effects of these substances, especially in animals, on the processing of calcium by the kidney cells and on blood flow. A possible explanation is that the calcium antagonists block the influx of calcium through special cell canals, especially the cells of the distal tubule. It is necessary to test whether there is a blockade or only a reduction in the passage of calcium. Our understanding of the effect of calcium antagonists is in large part based on the results of morphologic, physiologic, and pharmacologic studies of calcium in the kidneys. The particular processes involved in nephrocalcinosis are special objects of study with regard to calcium antagonists. This book presents the results of experimental studies of the effect of calcium antagonists on nephrocalcinosis and acute renal failure after ischemia. In this context, the clinician is particularly interested in the use of calcium antagonists to protect against the kidney in urolithiasis, in acute renal failure and during kidney transplantation. The book is thus of interest to urologists and nephrologists as well as pharmacologists. biochemists, physiologists, and others in research.

With the principles of these chapters understood, the student can immediately learn the significance tests of Chapter 6 and, if he needs it, the analysis of variance of Chapter 7. For some scientists this will be most of what they need. Howcver, they will be in a position to read and/or use the remaining chapters without undue difficulty.

The genetic advances formed a basis for discussions of problems relating to regulation of T cell subsets, mechanisms of activation and regulation of B cell differentiation and an analysis of the network hypothesis. The format of the symposium was arranged so as to include two sessions in the morning and two in the afternoon. Each session was introduced by one speaker, followed by free discussion. The intro ductory lectures are included in the proceedings. The participants summarized their contributions to the discussion in written form. In addi tion to the closed sessions, there was one open session at the Karolinska Institute with lectures by Drs. L. Hood, C. Milstein, D. Baltimore, J. Klein and B. Benacerraf, which are not included in these procee din gs. The symposium was sponsored by the Nobel Foundation and its Nobel Symposium Committee through grants from the Tercentenary Fund of the Bank of Sweden and the Knut & Alice Wallenberg Foundation. The Swedish Medical Research Council, the Swedish Cancer Society and the Swedish Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs also made contri butions.

The minimal requirement for independent existence is the individualism provided by the separation of 'life' from the environment. The cell exists by virtue of its surface membran~. One might define the first living organism as that stage of evolution where macromolecular catalysts or self-reproducing polymers were first segregated from the surrounding milieu by a membrane. Whether that early membrane resembled present cell membranes is irrelevant. What matters is that a membrane would have provided a mechanism for maintaining a local concentration of molecules, facilitating chemical evolution and allowing it to evolve into biochemical evolution. That or yet more primitive membranes, such as a hydrocarbon monolayer at an air-water interface, could also have provided a surface that would facilitate the aggregation and specific orientation of molecules and catalyze their interactions. If primitive membranes were much more than mere passive barriers to free diffusion, how much more is this true of the membranes of contemporary forms of life. A major revolution in biological thought has been the recogni tion that the cell, and especially the eukaryotic cell, is a bewildering maze of membranes and membranous organelles.

A peptide was found in ovine hypothalamus which inhibited the release of growth hormone from cultured anterior pituitary cells. 1,2 Determination 3… of its amino acid sequence indicated that it was a tetradecapeptide with a molecular weight of 1639 (Figure lJ. An identical peptide was later isolated from porcine hypothalamus by Schally and his coworkers. 4 The peptide was named somatostatin in the belief that it was a hypothalamic releasing factor whose sole function was to inhibit the secretion of growth hormone. It soon became evident, however, that a peptide with identical immunologic characteristics and biologic activity was present in the D cells of pancreatic islets, in D-like cells of the gastrointestinal tract, in parafollicular cells of the thyroid gland, and in extrahypo thalamic neurons of both the central and peripheral nervous system in various species, including man. It did so by serving at once as a text-book: for an undergraduate course, a general introduction to the subject for post-graduate students embarking on research on some a…spect of vision, and the interested non-specialists. Gordon Walls' 'The Vertebrate Eye and It. s Adaptive Radiation' and A. Rochon-Duvigneaud's 'Les Yeux et la Vision des Vertebres' have served as important sources of information on the subject and continue to do so even though it is 40 years since they appeared. However, they are essentially specialised reference works and are not easily accessible to boot. The genius of Katherine Tansley was to present in a succinct (132 pages) and lucid way a clear and an interesting survey of the matter. Everyone liked it, particularly the students because one could read it quickly and understand it. Thus, when it seemed that a new edition was desirable, especially in view of the enormous strides made and the vast literature that had accumulated in the past 20 years, one of us (MAA) asked Dr. Tansley if she would undertake the task. In response to this need, Conference papers were invited from distinguished engineers, scientists, and other specialists; their willingness to contribute from their expertise and their thinking is very much appreciated by the editors. The first four chapters of the volume deal with the larger scene and with the viewpoints of those concerned with it in behalf of government, corporations and the professions.

The meeting was dedicated to Dr. Francis John Worsley Roughton, Professor Emeritus of Colloid Science, University of Cambridge, England, in recognition of his numerous excellent contributions to the understanding of hemoglobin and red cell function. Das Buch wendet sich in erster Linie an den in der Praxis stehenden Ingenieur, machte aber auch dem Studierenden ein Relfer sein. Es solI die theoretischen und praktischen Mittel fUr den Bau solcher Anlagen an Rand geben und das tiefere Eindringen in das Wesen der Wasserheizung ermaglichen. 1m beschreibenden Teil ist eine graB ere Zahl Abbildungen von Bauelementen gegeben. Die dabei benutzten Darstellungen bestimmter Fabrikate stellen kein Werturteil gegenuber anderen Fabrikaten dar. Den Firmen, die mir durch Zur. verfugungstellung von Bildern behilflich waren, sei hiermit bestens gedankt. Die Bedeutung dieser Satze fUr die affine Geometrie ist vor allem durch HILBERTS klassisches Werk iiber die Grundlagen der Geometrie klargestellt. Der DESARGUESSche Satz besagt, daB die Streckenverhaltnisse der Ebene einen Schief korper bilden, der PAscALsche Satz besagt, daB sie einen Korper bilden. Der Beweis fUr diese beiden Tatsachen laBt sich aber auf mannigfache Weise anordnen. Und es erschien mir daher wichtig und lehrreich, dem Grund dieser verschiedenen Moglichkeiten nachzuspiiren. Es muBte sich doch jedes Verkniipfungsgesetz der Streckenrechnung in einem wohlbestimmten SchlieBungssatze sichtbar machen und die logische Ab hangigkeit dieser SchlieBungssatze voneinander feststellen lassen. Gliicklicherweise haben nun diese SchlieBungssatze auch von anderer Seite her Interesse. W. BLASCHKE hat auf dem Mathematiker-KongreB in Bologna die Vermutung ausgesprochen, daB die Theorie der Kurven gewebe auch fUr die Grundlagen der Geometrie fruchtbar werden konnte.

Die Entwicklung von Sensoren liegt neuerdings aus technologischen Grilnden haufig in den Handen von Halbleiter-Experten, von Physikern oder sogar auch von Physiologen, einer Gruppe von Fachleuten, denen nieht immer bewuBt ist, daB chemische Sensoren 'anders' sein milssen. Dazu sol len nur zwei wiehtige Einsatzkriterien hervorgehoben werden: Die Fahigkeit der Sensoren, auch in einem Gemisch aus vielfaltigen Komponenten nur eine be stimmte selektiv zu erfassen, und die Notwendigkeit, oft im Spurenbereich liegen de untere Konzentrationsgrenze meBtechnisch abzudecken. DaB der Markt filr chemische Sensoren, von Ausnahmen abgesehen, eher klein ist, stellt ein weiteres Merkmal und eine Begrenzung der Investitionen bei Neuentwicklungen dar.
