Purpose of this conference was to bring together experts from the GFR and neighbouring countries working in this field to evaluate possibilities and limits of this area of research in discussions with interested participants. This issue of Lecture Notes contains the invited contributions as well as the relevan~ remarks made by the discussants. Corresponding to the aims of the workshop the contributors had been encouraged to demon strate their mathematical models in the light of actual applied examples. It had been our intention to restrict attention to a small number of specific areas in order to achieve a concentrated in depth treatment in these restricted areas. The areas chosen contain two - Epidemio logy and Cell Models - which in the organisers feeling are not yet as well established in Continental Europe and one - Pharmacokinetic- with a more direct appeal to applied workers. While in the Epidemio logy of infectious and parasitic diseases today strategies of control and eradication are gaining importance, the cell models are concerned with explaining the modes of genesis of cancerous growth and the kinetics and interactions within multi-cell structures. 296 pp. Englisch.

It is written in the belief that a sound introduction to the mechanics of continu ous bodies is essential for students of structural geology and tectonics, just… as a sound introduction to physical chemistry is necessary for students of petrology. This view is shared by most specialists in structural geology, but it is not yet reflected in typical geology curricula. Undergraduates are still traditionally given just a few lectures on mechanical fundamentals, and there is rarely any systematic lecturing on this subject at the graduate level. The result is that many students interested in structure and tectonics finish their formal train ing without being able to understand or contribute to modem literature on rocks as mechanical systems. The long-term remedy for this is to introduce courses in continuum mechanics and material behavior as routine parts of the undergraduate curriculum. These subjects are difficult, but no more so than optical mineralogy or thermo dynamics or other rigorous subjects customarily studied by undergraduates. The short-term remedy is to provide books suitable for independ ent study by those students and working geologists alike who wish to improve their understanding of mechanical topics relevant to geology. This book is intended to meet the short-term need with respect to stress and strain, two elementary yet challenging concepts of continuum mechanics. 352 pp. Englisch.

It provides an up-to-date review of the role of ions in the trans mission of signals from…the perivascular space to the contractile ele ments of the smooth muscle cells. The various aspects are mainly discussed from a functional point of view and only few contributions concern the morphologic variations of cells .during varying ion activity. Special emphasis was placed on the significance of ion variations in the cerebral tissue and their rela tion to metabolic and nervous control of the brain vessels. It could be seen in this symposium that new techniques enabled the in vestigators to make considerable progress in the understanding of the actions and the interactions of ions on the membranes and on the inter nal structures of the smooth muscle cells if one compares the findings with the results of the previous symposium held in Ttibingen in 1972. It became evident that the insight into ionic actions enables the de velopment of powerful tools to be utilized in future therapy of dis turbances of local blood flow regulation. The participants of the symposium render thanks to the Dr. Thiemann GmbH in Ltinen, which supported the symposium and this publication in a generous way. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The goal of these notes is to give a reasonahly com plete, although not exhaustive, discussion of what is commonly referred to as the Hopf bifurcation with applications to spe cific problems, including stability calculations. Histo…rical ly, the subject had its origins in the works of Poincare [1] around 1892 and was extensively discussed by Andronov and Witt [1] and their co-workers starting around 1930. Hopf's basic paper [1] appeared in 1942. Although the term 'Poincare Andronov-Hopf bifurcation' is more accurate (sometimes Friedrichs is also included), the name 'Hopf Bifurcation' seems more common, so we have used it. Hopf's crucial contribution was the extension from two dimensions to higher dimensions. The principal technique employed in the body of the text is that of invariant manifolds. The method of Ruelle Takens [1] is followed, with details, examples and proofs added. Several parts of the exposition in the main text come from papers of P. Chernoff, J. Dorroh, O. Lanford and F. Weissler to whom we are grateful. The general method of invariant manifolds is common in dynamical systems and in ordinary differential equations: see for example, Hale [1,2] and Hartman [1]. Of course, other methods are also available. In an attempt to keep the picture balanced, we have included samples of alternative approaches. Specifically, we have included a translation (by L. Howard and N. Kopell) of Hopf's original (and generally unavailable) paper. 424 pp. Englisch.

Coronary units and new treatment…s have some what reduced the dramatic complications of the acute phase; but after the latter, evil effects of the disease remain at the physiological, psychological and social level. It is the aim of rehabi~itation to analyze these problems, to reduce them or to solve them whenever possible. When this conception of 'complete coronary care' took the lead, the necon ditioning effects of heart disease and of immobilization on physical conditi ons were emphasized: physical training programmes were prepared and their main lines and physiological effects are now fairly well known. But it was soon obvious that the psychological problems raised by the patient and his environment 'are equally important. Their approach is however much more difficult and their treatment particularly complex. So, the Council on Rehabilitation of the International Society of Cardiology is really grateful to Professor Dr. HALHUBER and Dr. Dr. STOCKSMEIER for giving the opportunity to specialists to discuss together this particular aspect of coronary disease. The discussions have been devoted to the methods of approaching the patient as well as to the therapeutic aspects and the role of psychologists in the rehabilitation programmes: some papers have been devoted also to the possible role of the personality as a risk factor in the development of the disease. 196 pp. Englisch.

It is written in the belief that a sound introduction to the mechanics of continu ous bodies is essential for students of structural geology and tectonics, just as…a sound introduction to physical chemistry is necessary for students of petrology. This view is shared by most specialists in structural geology, but it is not yet reflected in typical geology curricula. Undergraduates are still traditionally given just a few lectures on mechanical fundamentals, and there is rarely any systematic lecturing on this subject at the graduate level. The result is that many students interested in structure and tectonics finish their formal train ing without being able to understand or contribute to modem literature on rocks as mechanical systems. The long-term remedy for this is to introduce courses in continuum mechanics and material behavior as routine parts of the undergraduate curriculum. These subjects are difficult, but no more so than optical mineralogy or thermo dynamics or other rigorous subjects customarily studied by undergraduates. The short-term remedy is to provide books suitable for independ ent study by those students and working geologists alike who wish to improve their understanding of mechanical topics relevant to geology. And in a way I am offering a somewhat oblique commentary on HusserI's Meditations - 'oblique' because it is not a sys…tematic elucidation of the entire text. Nonetheless, it is primarily with the task of the Meditations that I am concerned. It is there that the antipathy between natural ~anguage and HusserI's quest for certainty come clearIy into focus. (Other texts are cited insofar as they shed light on this central work or illustrate the fact that HusserI did not significantly alter his position on the problem. ) My purpose here is to further sharpen that focus, showing that the consciousness within the phenomenological reductions is essentially language using. Working with the Wittgensteinian insight regarding 'pri vate languages,' I attempt to show that a language-using con sciousness cannot effectively divorce itself from its social context and is unable, therefore, to perform the radical phenomenological reductions. Solipsism, then, is never a genuine problem, but nei ther is the elimination of all existential commitments a genuine possibility. Finally, I conclude that language-use bridges the distinction between essence and existence, the transcendental and the transcendent, the ideal and the real-making the phenomeno logical method incapable of providing the apodictic foundations on which all metaphysics and science will be rebuilt. 116 pp. Englisch.
