From this, Yau gets the geometri…c fact that complete noncom pact Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature must have infinite volume, a result which was announced earlier by Calabi [4]. 6. Concluding Remarks In several of the above results, positivity of the semigroup plays an important role. This was also true, although only implicitly, for the early work of Hille and Yosida on the Fokker-Planck equation, i.e., Equation (4) with c = O. But it was Phillips [41], and Lumer and Phillips [37] who first called attention to the importance of dissipative and dispersive properties of the generator in the context of linear operators in a Banach space. The generation theorems in the Batty-Robinson paper appear to be the most definitive ones, so far, for this class of operators. The fundamental role played by the infinitesimal operator, also for the understanding of order properties, in the commutative as well as the noncommutative setting, are highlighted in a number of examples and applications in the different papers, and it is hoped that this publication will be of interest to researchers in a broad spectrum of the mathematical sub-divisions. 208 pp. Englisch.

My intention was to provide both my audience as well as myself with an introduction to the theory of 1arie deviations -…The organization of sections 1) through 3) owes something to chance and a great deal to the excellent set of notes written by R. Azencott for the course which he gave in 1978 at Saint-Flour (cf. Springer Lecture Notes in Mathematics 774). To be more precise: it is chance that I was around N. Y. U. at the time'when M. Schilder wrote his thesis. and so it may be considered chance that I chose to use his result as a jumping off point; with only minor variations. everything else in these sections is taken from Azencott. In particular. section 3) is little more than a rewrite of his exoposition of the Cramer theory via the ideas of Bahadur and Zabel. Furthermore. the brief treatment which I have given to the Ventsel-Freidlin theory in section 4) is again based on Azencott's ideas. All in all. the biggest difference between his and my exposition of these topics is the language in which we have written. However. another major difference must be mentioned: his bibliography is extensive and constitutes a fine introduction to the available literature. mine shares neither of these attributes. Moreover, the future for electrochemical technology is bright and there is a general expectation that new applications of electro…chemistry will become economic as the world responds to the challenge of more expensive energy, of the need to develop new materials and to exploit different chemical feedstocks and of the necessity to protect the environment. ' Inthis situation, the present rather fragmentary state ofelectrochemical technology is disappointing. Whilethere are many similarities in the underlying principles and even the practices of the electrochemically based industries, they are often not fully appreciated. Certainly, the Rand D programmes in many industries are in the hands of those with little formal training and whose experience of and interest in other branches of electrochemistry is very limited. Moreover, the academic world has done little to help. Electrode processes are, too often, totally ignored in courses to both scientists and engineers and certainly electrochemical technology is almost never taught as a unified subject with an appropriate balance between fundamentals, engineering and applications. Overall, it isnot surprising that the various strands have not interwoven and that scientists and engineers do not have a proper appreciation of the importance of electrochemical technology. Moreover, the future for electrochemical technology is bright and there is a general expectation that new applications of electrochem…istry will become economic as the world responds to the challenge of more expensive energy, of the need to develop new materials and to exploit different chemical feedstocks and of the necessity to protect the environment. ' Inthis situation, the present rather fragmentary state ofelectrochemical technology is disappointing. Whilethere are many similarities in the underlying principles and even the practices of the electrochemically based industries, they are often not fully appreciated. Certainly, the Rand D programmes in many industries are in the hands of those with little formal training and whose experience of and interest in other branches of electrochemistry is very limited. Moreover, the academic world has done little to help. Electrode processes are, too often, totally ignored in courses to both scientists and engineers and certainly electrochemical technology is almost never taught as a unified subject with an appropriate balance between fundamentals, engineering and applications. Overall, it isnot surprising that the various strands have not interwoven and that scientists and engineers do not have a proper appreciation of the importance of electrochemical technology. It is now commonly accepted that, in past attempts to force-fit the behavior of concrete into the rules of linear elastic fracture mechanics, proper attention has not been paid to scale effects. Clearly, the relationships among specimen size, crack length and opening, and characteristic material fabric dimensions have been, in comparison to their counterparts in metals, ceramics, and rocks, abused in concrete. Without a fundamental understanding of these relationships, additional testing in search of the elusive, single measure of fracture toughness has spawned additional confusion and frustration.
