The present text arose out of a course in Combinatorial Methods given by the writer at the Courant Institute during 1967-68. The first was to fulfill the need for an introductory level book combining the multidisciplinary aspects of atmospheric pollution. This book does cover most of the key facets: sources and sinks of atmospheric pollutants, atmospheric chemistry, transport and meteorology, effects on human beings and vegetation, and surveillance of air quality. The length of the book was purposely limited so that the cost would be within the means of most interested users. The second reason for preparing this book was stimulated by my mother-in-law, Mrs Clayton D. Root, Councilwoman and member of the Planning Commission of Crown Point, Indiana, who pointed out that all governmental levels must make decisions affecting the atmospheric quality of their regions of responsibility and yet have little information on atmospheric pollution for their assistance. This in fact was the precursor to the present day Division of Applied Mathematics. Certainly an outstanding feature of this program must have been the lectures in Fluid Dynamics by Professor Friedrichs and the late Professor von Mises. Their notes were prepared in mimeograph form and given a wide distribution at that time. Since their appearance these lectures have had a strong influence on teaching and research in the subject. As the reader soon learns the notes have lost none of their vitality over the years. Indeed in certain instances only in the last few years has the -field caught up with the ideas developed in the course of these lectures. Many ideas of value are still to be found in these notes and the Editors are most happy to be able to include this volume in the series. The corrections which have accumulated over the years have been incorporated, and in addition an index has been added. With these exceptions all desire to revise has been resisted. This great man and distinguished philosopher had died shortly before. We are particularly grateful to Wolfgang Stegmiiller for permitting us to include a translation of his eloge which was broadcast in Germany. These two translations have been reprinted here, thanks to the permission ofthe Harvard University Press, with only minor changes. The remainder of the present translations are my own; I am grateful to van Heijenoort for providing an English draft of 1931, which forms the basis of the translation appearing here. In these translations, the bibliographical references have been stan dardized (see p. 299 below) and the notation has been changed so that it is fairly uniform throughout (any differences from Herbrand's original notation are mentioned in footnotes). Over two hundred students of Kant's philosophy from Europe, Africa, and North and South America attended. The Congress was organized by a Committee consisting of Gottfried Martin of the University of Bonn and myself as co-chairmen, and the following members: Professors Ingeborg Heidemann (Bonn), Gerhard Funke (Mainz), Edmond Ortigues (Rennes), Stephan Korner (Bristol), W. H. Walsh (Edinburgh), George A. Schrader, Jr. (Yale), and John R. Silber (University of Texas). Generous financial support for the Congress was provided by Mr. Kilian J. Schmitt of Rochester. One hundred and eight papers were presented in six plenary and twenty two concurrent sessions. Chairmen of programs, in addition to members of the Committee, were: Professors John E.
