The so-called demarcation question, which has exercised philosophers of science over the last decades, posed the problem of distinguishing science proper from non-science - in par ticular, from metaphysics, from… pseudo-science, from the non rational or irrational, or from the untestable or the empirically meaningless. In psychiatric theory, the demarcation question appears as a problem of distinguishing the sane from the insane, the well from the mentally ill. The parallelism is interesting when the criteria for what fails to be scientific are seen to be congruent with the criteria which define those psychoses which are marked by cognitive failure. In this book Dr Yehuda Fried and Professor Joseph Agassi - a practicing psychiatrist and a philosopher of science, respectivel- focus on an extreme case of psychosis - paranoia - as an essentially intellectual disorder: that is, as one in which there is a systematic and chronic delusion which is sustained by logical means. They write: 'Paranoia is an extreme case by the very fact that paranoia is by definition a quirk of the intellectual apparatus, a logical delusion. ' (p. 2.

The fewness of firms in oligopoly give…s rise to interdependence which they have to take into account in choosing their optimal output or pricing policies in each production period. Since each firm's profit is a function of all firms' outputs in an oligopoly without product differ entiation, each firm in choosing its optimal output in any period has to know beforehand all other rival firms' outputs in the same period. As this is in general impossible, it has to form some kind of expecta tion on other firms' most likely outputs. Cournot thought that in each period each firm assumed that all its rivals' outputs would remain at the same level as in the preceding period. Needless to say, the Cournot assumption is too naive to be realistically supported. However, the Cournot profit maximizing oligopoly model characterized by this assumption has many important and attractive properties from the view point of economic theory and provides a frame of reference for more realistic theories of oligopoly. The relevant study was made in 22 medieal museums in Europe, England and Seotland between 1966 and 1969. About 670 dry bones were… reeorded by over 2000 photographs. Emphasis is plaeed on ehanges for whieh diagnostie eriteria are proposed rather than on those for whieh diagnostie problems remain. The ehanges studied were maeroseopieal not mieroseopieal. This is not areport on the pathological ehanges in dry bones in medieal museums, but a statement on 'Diagnostic eriteria of syphilis in dry bones' and of eertain other prevalent ehanges, and their eauses, whieh are needed for differential diagnosis. 'Syphilis' as used here usually refers equally to the 'treponematoses' whieh inc1udes yaws and treponarid. It is intended as a eomprehensive guide for archaeologists and anthro pologists, and as an instrument of preeision for osteo-arehaeologists. It is not a manual of pathology, although pathologists may be interested in this revival of the dying skill of diagnosis of disease in dry bones. All reeords, written, photo graphie and radiographie, together with the initial 120,000 word report, have been deposited in the Department of Morbid Anatomy, Institute of Orthopaedies, London, where they will be available for study. Abrief introduetion to this study has been published (Haekett, 1975). I would like especially to thank the President of the Heidelberger Akade mie der Wissenschaften, and Doktor H. We have restricted ourselves to supplementing the topics originally chosen. Some of our problems first published in this work have given rise to extensive research. To include all such developments would have changed the character of the work, and even an incomplete account, which would be unsatisfactory in itself, would have cost too much labor and taken up too much space. We have to thank many readers who, since the publication of this work almost fifty years ago, communicated to us various remarks on it, some of which have been incorporated into this edition. After the calculus, he takes a course in analysis and a course in algebra. Depending upon his interests (or those of his departm…ent), he takes courses in special topics. Ifhe is exposed to topology, it is usually straightforward point set topology; if he is exposed to geom etry, it is usually classical differential geometry. The exciting revelations that there is some unity in mathematics, that fields overlap, that techniques of one field have applications in another, are denied the undergraduate. He must wait until he is well into graduate work to see interconnections, presumably because earlier he doesn't know enough. These notes are an attempt to break up this compartmentalization, at least in topology-geometry. What the student has learned in algebra and advanced calculus are used to prove some fairly deep results relating geometry, topol ogy, and group theory. (De Rham's theorem, the Gauss-Bonnet theorem for surfaces, the functorial relation of fundamental group to covering space, and surfaces of constant curvature as homogeneous spaces are the most note worthy examples.) In the first two chapters the bare essentials of elementary point set topology are set forth with some hint ofthe subject's application to functional analysis. 252 pp. Englisch.

There, at the session of Commission 10, we proposed to organize a Symposium which would stress the observational asp…ects of solar activity. It was our hope that such a Symposium might stimulate studies of those important problems in solar physics which for a long time had been neglected in overall scientific discussion. Although a provisional date for the Symposium was then decided, it did not take place to avoid overlapping with other lAO activities. At the session of Commission 10 in Sydney -on the occasion of the XVth lAO General Assembly in 1973 -we repeated our proposal and forwarded the invitation of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences to organize the Symposium in Prague. Both were accepted. During the discussions about the programme of the Symposium -enthusiastically promoted by the late president of Commission 10, Prof. K. O. Kiepenheuer -it was decided to change slightly its subject. The theoreti cal problems were stressed and the majority of the Scientific Organizing Committee agreed not to deal with short-lived phenomena of the solar activity or with individual active regions.
