Several people contributed to the creation of this book, in various ways. Prof. S. D. Joshi, my supervisor, introduced me to the study of the Sanskrit grammatical tradition. His unfail…ing skepticism towards and disagreement with the ideas worked out in this book contributed more to their development than he may have been aware. Prof. Paul Kiparsky gave encouragement when this was badly needed. In the years following 1979 Dr. Dominik Wujastyk was kind enough to read the manuscript and suggest improvements in language and style. To all of these lowe a debt of gratitude, but most of all lowe such a debt to Pandit Shivarama Krishna Shastri. In the course of several years he read with me many portions of Nagesa's grammatical and other works, and much besides. His ability to understand difficult grammatical and philosophical texts in Sanskrit was unequalled, and without his help it would have taken far longer to write this book and indeed might very well have proved impossible. I will assume, with everyone at the outset, that the world contains agency of the kind found in some of a person's comings and goings, movings and changing of things. Agency is exhibited in more and in less sophisticated forms, that is, in any sophisticated, artful activity and in less complex, non-articulate physical activities. In both there appears to be more than mere causal efficacy imparted to the environment by a person. In sophisticated agen cy activities are organized, guided, purposive and purposeful comings and goings, movings and changes. And purpose is not absent in less soph isticated purposive activities of active creatures. So I shall argue in what follows. Now is the time for introducing the themes, topics, and issues to be considered, and the plan and purpose in them.

Jarvie was trained as a social anthropologist in the center of British social anthropology - the London School of Economics, where Bronislaw Malinowski was the object of ancestor worship. Jarvie's doctorate was in philosophy, however, under the guidance of Karl Popper and John Watkins. He c…hanged his department not as a defector but as a rebel, attempting to exorcize the ancestral spirit. He criticized the method of participant obser vation not as useless but as not comprehensive: it is neither necessary nor sufficient for the making of certain contributions to anthropology; rather, it all depends on the problem-situation. And so Jarvie remained an anthro pologist at heart, who, in addition to some studies in rather conventional anthropological or sociological molds, also studied the tribe of social scien tists, but also critically examining their problems - especially their overall, rather philosophical problems, but not always so: a few of the studies in cluded in this volume exemplify his work on specific issues, whether of technology, or architecture, or nationalism in the academy, or moviemaking, or even movies exhibiting excessive sex and violence. These studies attract his attention both on account of their own merit and on account of their need for new and powerful research tools, such as those which he has forged in his own intellectual workshop over the last two decades.

EIJROCRYPT is now an annual international European meeting in cryptology, intended primarily for the inter…national of researchers in this area. EUROCRYPT 84 was community following previous meetings held at Burg Feuerstein in 1982 and at IJdine in 1983. In fact EUROCRYPT 84 was thc first such meeting being organized under IXCR (International Association of Cryptology Research). Other sponsors were the well-known French association on cybernetics research AFCET, the LITP (Laborstoire d' Informntique thcorique called et de Programmation), which is a laboratory of computer science associated with CNRS, and the department of mathematics and computer science at the Ilniversity RenE Descartcs, Sorbonne. EUROCRYPT 83 was very successfull, with about 180 participants from a great variety of foreign countries and 50 papers addressing all aspects of cryptology, close to applied as well as theoretical. It also had a special feature, i.e. a special session on smart cards particularly welcome at the time, since France was then carrying on an ambitious program on smart cards. In each chapter there are some results which can be described as contemporary, and in some chapters this is true of almost all the material. This is an introduction to the subject, not a treatise. It should not be expected that it covers every topic in the theory of arithmetical functions. The bibliography is a list of papers related to the topics that are covered, and it is at least a good approximation to a complete list within the limits I have set for myself. This meeting was arranged at the same location where the ESPN was founded exactly seventeen years ago. Although the presentations in this meeting dealt with numerous important problems encountered in paediatric neurosurgery, the main emphasis was on that special problem which exemplifies the extraordinary advances in paediatric neurosurgery and its related fields. Therefore the main topic of this scientific meeting was dedicated to the subject of 'Space Occupying Lesions of the Cerebral Midline'. Recent diagnostic procedures, such as computerized axial tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, now enable the neurosurgeon preoperatively, to obtain precise data on the location, and in many cases also on the nature of a lesion deep within the brain. Fundamental new knowledge in neuroanatomy and neurotopography has now transformed previous high-risk procedures into routine ones for the neurosurgeon, and an abundance of new surgical techniques has improved the success rate in the treatment of many patients. The scientific meetings of the ESPN have proved to be a successful forum for the exchange of experiences, opinions and even critical discussions. This monograph explores the requirements of such mechanisms, reviews those pr…eviously proposed and postulates a new one based on a direct electric coding of stimulation frequencies. Experi mental support for the option taken is provided both at the single neuron and neural network levels. More specifically, the material presented divides naturally into four parts: a description of the experimental and theoretical framework where this work becomes meaningful (Chapter 2), a detailed specifica tion of the pacemaker neuron model proposed together with its valida tion through simulation (Chapter 3), an analytic study of the behavior of this model when submitted to rhythmic stimulation (Chapter 4) and a description of the neural network model proposed for learning, together with an analysis of the simulation results obtained when varying seve ral factors related to the connectivity, the intraneuronal parameters, the initial state and the stimulation conditions (Chapter 5). This work was initiated at the Computer and Information Science Depart ment of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and completed at the Institut de c Lber n e t Lca of the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya, Barcelona.
