The donor suggested that the gift be used to support a conference on the current dilem mas of the American family and to publish its proceedings. The current chairman of the department, Jerry Wiener, formulated the initial plans for the conference with Leon Yochelson, who had been chairman at the time the gift was made. Dr. Yochelson is now Chairman of the Board of the Psychiatric Institute of the District of Columbia. These initial discussions led to a significant and sus tained collaboration between the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at George Washington and the Psychiatric In stitute in planning the conference and the present volume. A committee was established to plan the conference. It became apparent that identification of error-in-variables models was less of a problem when some dynamic features were present, and that the cathegory of 'pre determined variables' was meaningless, since lagged endogenous and truly exogenous variables had very different identification properties. Also, for'the models I was considering, both necessary and sufficient conditions for identification could be expressed as simple counting rules, trivial to compute. These results seemed somewhat striking in the context of traditional econometrics literature, and p- vided the original motivation for this monograph. The monograph, therefore, atempts to analyze econometric identification of models when the variables are measured with error and when dynamic features are present. In trying to generalize the examples I was considering, although the final results had very simple expressions, the process of formally proving them became cumbersome and lengthy (in particular for the 'sufficiency' part of the proofs). Possibly this was also due to a lack of more high-powered analytical tools and/or more elegant derivations, for which I feel an apology coul be appropiate. The main reason for the Committee's decision was the hope that the diffusion of the Glossary through 'Acta Neurochirurgica' may bring about a better understanding of neurotraumatological terminology on a worldwide scale. The Glossary should facilitate the classification and the comparison of traumatic lesions of the Nervous System. It will consequently be easier to compile statistics and correctly interpret the informations thus obtained. The very commendable initiative of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons in revising the terminology of head injuries and in publishing this work in Vol. 12 (1966) of 'Clinical Neurosurgery' constitutes an important contribution. Philosophy properly speaking is characterized by the kind oflogic it employs, for what it employs it assumes, however silently; and what it assumes it presupposes. The logic stands behind the ontology and is, so to speak, metaphysically prior. One word of caution. The philosophical aspects of logic have lagged behind the mathematical aspects in point of view of interest and develop ment. The work of N. Rescher and others have gone a long way to correct this. The logic stands behind the ontology and is, so to speak, metaphysically prior. One word of caution. The philosophical aspects of logic have lagged behind the mathematical aspects in point of view of interest and develop ment. The work of N. Rescher and others have gone a long way to correct this. However, their work on philosophical logic has been more concerned with the logical than with the philosophical aspects. I have in mind another approach, one that would call attention to the ontological (systematic meta physics) or metaphysical (critical ontology) aspects, whichever term you prefer. It is this approach which I have pursued in the following chapters. Since together they stand at the head of a system of philosophy which has been developed in some seventeen books, a system which ranges over all of the topics of philosophy, the chosen approach can be seen as the necessary one.
