The explanations advanced frequently hinge on those supply and demand factors, perceptible during the growth period itself, which may have helped or hindered economic progress. The problem which arises with this approach is whether those forces attributed with having pulled a country forward were the same as those which, in their absence, had held it back. For example, the growth of'inter national demand may be seen as a major stimulus in the economic development of a particular country, but its effectiveness as a stimu lant may have been contingent upon the prior removal of quite diffe rent obstacles to growth. In these circumstances it would be quite wrong to attribute lack of earlier development to the absence of international demand. Thus the study of a period preceeding discer nible growth in a sector of the economy may tell historians as much about the reasons for subsequent growth as a study of the growth period itself. This was my initial reason for choosing to research into the industrial development in the Netherlands in the first half of the nineteenth century: that it was an interval in economic history usually interpreted as one of stagnation, of missed opportunities and even of economic decline. 256 pp. Englisch.

After being introduced by Turgot in 1767 it has become accepted as one of the cornerstones of contemporary economic theory. My interest in this area started in the… fall semester of 1971 at U.C. Berkeley where I was enrolled in Professor Ronald W. Shephard's class on the theory of production. Shephard introduced me to his work on the Law of Diminishing Returns, and encouraged me to continue that work. This monograph is a result of my inspiring experience with Professor Shephard; and I am sincerely grateful to him for everything he has taught me. On the other hand, there may be young people carrying a severe coronary risk, knowingly or not, who prefer to avoid risk factor in tervention. There are strong vested interests in the commercial world who would prefer to overlook any therapeutic value of dietary modification for selected in dividuals, and others who see great merit in a particular diet. The pharmaceutical in dustry has a vested interest in the cholesterol story as well. The individual doctor needs to decide for himself whether the cholesterol issue requires action or not, and for this he needs access to up to date and relevant data. This is one of the purposes of this book. The use of lipid-lowering therapy is usually quite a straightforward exercise for any medical practitioner, once the decision has been taken to initiate it. 96 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The main aim of this study is to define the clinical criteria which must be considered in order to come to an adequate decision whether a patient with intracranial arteriovenous malformation (AVM) should be operated upon or treated… conservatively. A special method was used to reduce the effects of selection. This method made it possible to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of conservative treatment versus surgery. The method implies that patients with equal combinations of variables (risk profiles) were compared in the two treatment lines. The variables building up the risk-profile pattern were chosen by analysing the decision process, as it was originally practiced by the surgeon who selected and treated the patients of this study. The risk profiles thus described relevant characteristics of the patient and his malformation. The variables were assigned numerical values accord ing to their prognostic value. Summation of the variables making up the risk profile then gives each risk profile a certain value. A low value symbolizes a bad prognosis and a high value a good prognosis in both treatment groups. There were many risk profiles with the same value in both groups and a comparison could be made over a large part of the risk-profile scale. This comparison showed that surgical treatment of A VM can always be justified, although the indications for surgery are less strong in patients with low risk profile values. 96 pp. Englisch.

An entropy constrained linear program for the trip distribution problem is formulated and shown to have the ordinarJ doubly constrained gravity model as its solution. Entropy is here used as a measure of interactivity, which is constrained to be at a prescribed level. In this way the variation present in the reference trip matrix is preserved. After being introduced by Turgot in 1767 it has become accepted as one of the cornerstones of contemporary economic theory. My interest in this area started in the fal…l semester of 1971 at U.C. Berkeley where I was enrolled in Professor Ronald W. Shephard's class on the theory of production. Shephard introduced me to his work on the Law of Diminishing Returns, and encouraged me to continue that work. Neuware -The main aim of this study is to define the clinical criteria which must be considered in order to come to an adequate decision whether a patient with intracranial arteriovenous malformation (AVM) should be operated upon or treated con…servatively. A special method was used to reduce the effects of selection. This method made it possible to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of conservative treatment versus surgery. The method implies that patients with equal combinations of variables (risk profiles) were compared in the two treatment lines. The variables building up the risk-profile pattern were chosen by analysing the decision process, as it was originally practiced by the surgeon who selected and treated the patients of this study. The risk profiles thus described relevant characteristics of the patient and his malformation. The variables were assigned numerical values accord ing to their prognostic value. Summation of the variables making up the risk profile then gives each risk profile a certain value. A low value symbolizes a bad prognosis and a high value a good prognosis in both treatment groups. There were many risk profiles with the same value in both groups and a comparison could be made over a large part of the risk-profile scale. This comparison showed that surgical treatment of A VM can always be justified, although the indications for surgery are less strong in patients with low risk profile values.Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 96 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Much modern (Le. post-17S0) economic history is concerned with success in that a vast body of literature focuses its attention upon the experience of industrialisation and economic growth or upon relative differences in performance onc…e the growth process is underway. The explanations advanced frequently hinge on those supply and demand factors, perceptible during the growth period itself, which may have helped or hindered economic progress. The problem which arises with this approach is whether those forces attributed with having pulled a country forward were the same as those which, in their absence, had held it back. For example, the growth of'inter national demand may be seen as a major stimulus in the economic development of a particular country, but its effectiveness as a stimu lant may have been contingent upon the prior removal of quite diffe rent obstacles to growth. In these circumstances it would be quite wrong to attribute lack of earlier development to the absence of international demand. Thus the study of a period preceeding discer nible growth in a sector of the economy may tell historians as much about the reasons for subsequent growth as a study of the growth period itself. There are strong vested interests in the commercial world who would prefer to overlook any therapeutic value of dietary modification for selected in dividuals, and others who see great merit in a particular diet. The pharmaceutical in dustry has a vested interest in the cholesterol story as well. The individual doctor needs to decide for himself whether the cholesterol issue requires action or not, and for this he needs access to up to date and relevant data. This is one of the purposes of this book.
