The first was a series of rejections by the U.S. Senate between 1984 and 1986 of resolutions to permit live television coverage of floor proceedings. The second was the 1984 'Camscam affair,' the media label given to a p…artisan war over camera coverage of U.S. House proceedings. Each episode, if nothing else, made plain the intensity of the feelings that elected representatives feel about televised sessions. Legislative television was not taken lightly by those who had the most to gain or lose. Surveys indicate that legislative watchers, 'C-SP AN junkies,' number in the millions and penetration of cable access to televised sessions numbered nearly 40 million in 1986. In addition to the direct viewers, television news programs increasingly use excerpts from the televised sessions as enhancements and sources for political reporting. Televising legislatures, in short, has attracted much new attention to the process oflegislating. The innovation and diffusion of the electronic Acropolis has transformed politics in the U.S. Yet, its impact on the democratic process has attracted little notice except from a few political journalists. Our predilections as economists working in the public choice tradition led us into the analysis of several questions surrounding television: What do televised sessions provide for legislators How are incumbent reelection bids affected Do all incumbents benefit How are legislative sessions changed Has the enactment of laws been influenced For the most part, these questions had received only cursory treatment.

These studies have allowed the unraveling of some basic principles of mol ecular recognition, such as complementarity, specificity, and dynam ics of the interacting species, and at the same time have led to development of analytical and separation techniques based on bio logical specificity (e. g. , affinity chromatography and other bioaffinity methods). This volume was assembled to address current research and developing ideas in biomolecular recognition through the contribu tions presented at the Conference on 'Mechanisms of Recognition in Biological Macromolecules' held in Siena, Italy, September 4-6,1986. The Conference was cosponsored by the National Research Council of Italy, the Italian Biochemical Society, the University of Siena, and the International Interest Group in Biorecognition Technology.

Now, for any time instant, T, of the sequence the arrow is at a position, Pi' and at Ti+! the i arrow is at Pi+i with Pi ::I-P+- Clearly, each Ti must be a singular time i 1 unit at which the arrow is at rest at Pi because if the arrow were moving during Ti there would be a further sequence, Til' of time instants required for the arrow to traverse the smaller distance. Now, regardless of the level to which this recursive argument is applied, one is left with the flight of the arrow comprising a sequence of positions at which the arrow is at rest. The original intent of presenting this paradox has been interpreted to be as an argument against the possibility of individuated objects moving in space.

Our book is primarily aimed toward organic and theoretical chemists interested in the enume ration of Kekule structures of conjugated hydrocarbons as well as to scientists working in the field of mathematical and computational chemistry. The book may be of some relevance also to mathematicians wishing to learn about contemporary applications of combinatorics, graph theory and other branches of discrete mathematics. In 1985, when we decided to prepare these notes for publication, we expected to be able to give a complete account of all known combi natorial formulas for the number of Kekule structures of benzenoid hydrocarbons. This turned out to be a much more difficult task than we initially realized: only in 1986 some 60 new publications appeared dealing with the enumeration of Kekule structures in benzenoids and closely related topics. In any event, we believe that we have collec ted and systematized the essential part of the presently existing results. In addition to this we were delighted to see that the topics to which we have been devoted in the last few years nowadays form a rapidly expanding branch of mathematical chemistry which attracts the attention of a large number of researchers (both chemists and mathematicians). 372 pp. Englisch.

We conclude with a short summary of the contributions to this volume. UNIFICATION GRAMMAR 3 Feature Structures or Complex Categories. Unification Grammar was developed by Martin Kay (Kay 1979). Martin Kay wanted to give a precise defmition (and implementation) of the notion of 'feature'. Linguists use features at nearly all levels of linguistic description. In phonetics, for instance, the phoneme b is usually described with the features 'bilabial', 'voiced' and 'nasal'. In the case of b the first two features get the value +, the third (nasal) gets the value -. Feature value pairs in phonology are normally represented as a matrix. bilabial: + voiced: + I nasal: - [Feature matrix for b.] In syntax features are used, for example, to distinguish different noun classes. The Latin noun 'murus' would be characterized by the following feature-value pairs: gender: masculin, number: singular, case: nominative, pred: murus. Besides a matrix representation one frequently fmds a graph representation for feature value pairs. The edges of the graph are labelled by features. Photo synthesis is only considered where its pigments impinge on photo morphogenic investigations, or where its processes provide illustrative examples of particular interactions between light and biological material. Chapter 1 gives a general account of the various ways in which light affects plant development, and introduces topics which are subsequently covered in greater detail. Our book is primarily aimed toward organic and theoretical chemists interested in the enume ration of Kekule structures of conjugated hydrocarbons as well as to scientists working in the field of mathematical and computational chemistry. The book may be of some relevance also to mathematicians wishing to learn about contemporary applications of combinatorics, graph theory and other branches of discrete mathematics. In 1985, when we decided to prepare these notes for publication, we expected to be able to give a complete account of all known combi natorial formulas for the number of Kekule structures of benzenoid hydrocarbons. This turned out to be a much more difficult task than we initially realized: only in 1986 some 60 new publications appeared dealing with the enumeration of Kekule structures in benzenoids and closely related topics. In any event, we believe that we have collec ted and systematized the essential part of the presently existing results. We conclude with a short summary of the contributions to this volume. UNIFICATION GRAMMAR 3 Feature Structures or Complex Categories. Unification Grammar was developed by Martin Kay (Kay 1979). Martin Kay wanted to give a precise defmition (and implementation) of the notion of 'feature'. Linguists use features at nearly all levels of linguistic description. In phonetics, for instance, the phoneme b is usually described with the features 'bilabial', 'voiced' and 'nasal'. In the case of b the first two features get the value +, the third (nasal) gets the value -. Feature value pairs in phonology are normally represented as a matrix. bilabial: + voiced: + I nasal: - [Feature matrix for b.] In syntax features are used, for example, to distinguish different noun classes. The Latin noun 'murus' would be characterized by the following feature-value pairs: gender: masculin, number: singular, case: nominative, pred: murus. Besides a matrix representation one frequently fmds a graph representation for feature value pairs. The edges of the graph are labelled by features. In contrast to the preceding one this issue is written in English. There had b…een good reasons for this decision but there had been equally good arguments against it by some board members. We therefore consider this to be a trial. Being aware of the difficulties to prepare a book not in one's mother tongue the editors only made minor corrections of the authors' con tributions. Having published with the first proceedings an overview of the various fields of research on osteology in our country, the conference of the German Society for Osteology now deals with special subjects and so will this conference report. The main heading of this book being 'Generalized bone diseases'. One chapter will deal with new developments in the field of osteology and another presents unusual cases presented at the meeting. Our hopes are that the efforts of the German Society for Osteology, the local organizers and the editors will find some acknowledgement. Those of us who instructed them had to rely on assigning journal articles to be read and providing an overview and syn thesis of th…e area in our lectures. In the last few years, the situation has changed markedly. There are now several very good textbooks that fill the void, reflecting an increasing interest in this area of research and theory. Here is one more. There are many ways to tell a story. Our book, we think, tells it dif ferently enough to have made it worth the writing. As we began to talk, some time ago, about undertaking this project, we found we had a mutual interest in trying to present the study of social development from a histori cal point of view. The field has changed dramatically from its inception, and we have both been in it long enough to have witnessed first-hand a number of these changes. Modifications of theoretical orientations and the de velopment of increasingly sophisticated and rigorous methodology have brought with them the stimulation of controversy and growth, as social developmental psychologists argued about the best ways of going about their business. Certainly the same things have happened in other areas of psychology, but the arguments seem to have been particularly vigorous in our own domain. 560 pp. Englisch.
