The major reason for this development is, in fact, the Chernobyl accident. Large quantities of radiocesium were released in April/May 1986 as a pulse. To follow the pulse of radiocesium through ecosystem pathways has meant that important fluxes and mechanisms, i.e., ecosystem structures, have been revealed. It is important to stress that many of these new structures and equations are valid not just for radiocesium, but for most types of contaminants, e.g. for metals, nutrients and organics. This means that the models, methods (of building and testing models) and equations described in this book for lakes and coastal areas should be of great interest also to other ecosystem modellers. Genetic Programming (GP) and Inductive Logic Programming (ILP) are two of the approaches for data mining. This book first sets the necessary backgrounds for the read…er, including an overview of data mining, evolutionary algorithms and inductive logic programming. It then describes a framework, called GGP (Generic Genetic Programming), that integrates GP and ILP based on a formalism of logic grammars. The formalism is powerful enough to represent context- sensitive information and domain-dependent knowledge. This knowledge can be used to accelerate the learning speed and/or improve the quality of the knowledge induced. A grammar-based genetic programming system called LOGENPRO (The LOGic grammar based GENetic PROgramming system) is detailed and tested on many problems in data mining. It is found that LOGENPRO outperforms some ILP systems. We have also illustrated how to apply LOGENPRO to emulate Automatically Defined Functions (ADFs) to discover problem representation primitives automatically. By employing various knowledge about the problem being solved, LOGENPRO can find a solution much faster than ADFs and the computation required by LOGENPRO is much smaller than that of ADFs. Moreover, LOGENPRO can emulate the effects of Strongly Type Genetic Programming and ADFs simultaneously and effortlessly. Data Mining Using Grammar Based Genetic Programming and Applications is appropriate for researchers, practitioners and clinicians interested in genetic programming, data mining, and the extraction of data from databases.

At that time, reports on the practice effects associated with routinely utilized clinical neuropsychological instruments were sparse. While tes…t-retest data were available for almost all assessment instruments, this was usually in the form of correlation coefficients and not changes in mean performance between or across assessment periods (see McCaffrey & Westervelt, 1995 for a detailed discussion of these and related issues). Clinical neuropsychological practitioners had few guidelines to assist them in determining if a change in a patient's performance across assessments was due to an intervention, maturation, practice effects, or a combination of factors. This volume represents our efforts at reviewing the literature between 1970 and 1998 and extracting the reported information on practice effects. The tables include the assessment instrument used, information on the subject/patient groups, the sample size (n}, gender, age, intervention, interval between the assessments, scores at both assessment points, and the citation. Those studies that reported data on more than two assessment points are indicated by a notation~ however, any data beyond the second assessment are not reported and the interested reader should refer to the original article. Interpretation of Cardiac Arrhythmias presupposes no prior knowledge of arrhythmias, and progresses from basic to the complex. The didactic sections focus extensively on the mechanism of arrhythmia, using laddergrams and other diagramatic devices to help the student visualize what is happening with the cardiac conduction system. Most papers rely on resolution or tableaux methods, with a few exceptions choosing the equational paradigm. In its entirety the volume is a mirror of contemporary research in r st-order theorem proving. One trend to be observed is the interest in e ective decision procedures. The main aim of rs t-order theorem proving was and still is to demonstrate the validity or unsatisa bility of formulas, by more and more - phisticatedmethods. Withinthelastyears,however,theothersideofthemedal{ falsi abilityand satisab ility { has r eceived growing attention. Though in g- eral non-terminating, theorem provers sometimes act as decision procedures on subclasses ofrs t-order logic. Inparticularcases theiroutputcanevenbeused to extract n ite representations of models or counter-examples. Another devel- mentistheextension ofdeductiontechniquesfromclassicallogictomany-valued and modal logics. By suitably generalizing classical concepts many results carry over to non-classical logics. This line of research is stimulated by artici al int- ligence with its need for more expressive logics capable of modeling real-world reasoning. From a formal point of view this volume comprises two types of papers, invited and contributed ones. The conference was held 9-12 - cember 1998 at Tokai University in Tokyo. Close to a hundred participants from 10 cou…ntries participated. Interest in Computational Geometry surfaced among engineers in Japan - out twenty years ago, while interest in Discrete Geometry arose as a natural extension of the research of a group of graph theorists more recently. One of the goals of the conference was to bring together these two groups and to put them in contact with experts in these elds from abroad. This is the second conference in the series. The plan is to hold one every year and to publish the papers of the conferences every two years.
