Plenary lectures were presented by Prof. Bengt Sammuelsson (Karolinska Institute, Stockholm; 1982 Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine) and Prof. E. 1. Corey (Harvard University; 1990 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry). Both of these plenary lectures were held on Day 1, which set an exciting tone for this meeting. Immediately following these plenary lectures, three simultaneous breakout sessions were held, one of inflammation, a second on cancer and synthesis of novel inhibitors, and a third on enzymes-lipoxygenases/cyclooxygenases and inhibitors.

We also acknowledge a number of scientists from Canada, France, Germany, UK and USA, where plant lipid research is traditionally very active. The Symposium provided an opportunity for presentation and discussion of 68 lectures and 93 posters in 11 scientific sessions, which together covered all aspects of plant lipid researches, such as the structure, analysis, biosynthesis, regulation, physiological function, environmental aspects, and the biotechnology of plant lipids. In memory of the founder of this series of symposia, the Terry Galliard Lecture was delivered by Professor Ernst Heinz from Universitat: Hamburg, Germany. In addition, special lectures were given by two outstanding scientists from animal lipid fields, Professor James Ntambi from University of Wisconsin, USA, and Dr. Masahiro Nishijima from the National Institute for Infectious Diseases, Japan. To our great honor and pleasure, the session of Lipid Biosynthesis was chaired by Dr.

It is popular because it is simple, easy to understand and apply, and stable, and accounts for most of the runoff producing watershed characteristics,…such as soil type, land use, hydrologic condition, and antecedent moisture condition. The SCS-CN method was originally developed for its use on small agricultural watersheds and has since been extended and applied to rural, forest and urban watersheds. Since the inception of the method, it has been applied to a wide range of environments. In recent years, the method has received much attention in the hydrologic literature. The SCS-CN method was first published in 1956 in Section-4 of the National Engineering Handbook of Soil Conservation Service (now called the Natural Resources Conservation Service), U. S. Department of Agriculture. The publication has since been revised several times. However, the contents of the methodology have been nonetheless more or less the same. Being an agency methodology, the method has not passed through the process of a peer review and is, in general, accepted in the form it exists. Despite several limitations of the method and even questionable credibility at times, it has been in continuous use for the simple reason that it works fairly well at the field level.

Furthermore, scientists are being challenged not only to reduce mortality, but also to improve quality of life. Thus, more than ever, intellectuals from different disciplines including biology, sociology, informatics and health care have to join forces to meet the mandate. The World Heart Congress with a focus on 'Frontiers in Cardiovascular Health' held in Winnipeg during July 6-11, 2001, made a unique attempt to bring these specialists together to brainstorm and map out the course of action for cardiovascular research and health in the next century. Anytime there is a relative increase in the workload on the heart, there are adap tive myocardial as well as humoral responses. When these adaptations or remodel ing at the organ, subcellular or gene level, become inadequate for a proper tissue perfusion, the condition of heart failure ensues. Prevention of the factors leading to the relative increase in workload as well as a better understanding of the adap tive responses and their failure are some of the hopes to combat the morbidity and mortality due to heart failure.

As is customary at FC, these proceedings represent 'final' versions of the papers presented, revised to take into… account comments and discussions from the conference. Submissions to the conference were strong, with 74 papers submitted and 19 accepted for presentation and publication. (Regrettably, three of the submit ted papers had to be summarily rejected after it was discovered that they had been improperly submitted in parallel to other conferences.) The small program committee worked very hard under a tight schedule (working through Christmas day) to select the program. No program chair could ask for a better committee; my thanks to everyone for their hard work and dedication. In addition to the refereed papers, the program included a welcome from the Minister of Telecommunications and e-Commerce, Renee Webb, a keynote address by Nigel Hickson, and a panel on privacy tradeoffs cheiired by Rebecca Wright (with panelists Ian Goldberg, Ron Rivest, and Graham Wood). The traditional Tuesday evening 'rump session' was skillfully officiated by Markus Jakobsson. My job as program chair was made much, much easier by the excellent work of our general chair, Nicko van Someren, who performed the miracle of hiding from me any evidence of the innumerable logistical nightmares associated with conducting this conference. The inaugural workshop, Towards E…volvable Hardware, took place in Lausanne in October 1995, followed by the First International Conference on Evolvable Systems: From Biology to Hardware (ICES), held in Tsukuba, Japan in October 1996. The second ICES conference was held in Lausanne in September 1998, with the third and fourth being held in Edinburgh, April 2000 and Tokyo, October 2001 respectively. This has become the leading conference in the eld of evolvable systems and the 2003 conference promised to be at least as good as, if not better than, the four that preceeded it. The fth international conference was built on the success of its predec- sors, aiming at presenting the latest developments in the eld. This workshop was the third in the MABS series. The earlier two were - ganized as workshops of the two most recent ICMAS conferences (ICMAS 1998, Paris, France and ICMAS 2000, Boston, USA). Revised versions of the papers presented at these workshops were published as volumes 1534 and 1979 in the Lecture Notes in Arti cial Intelligence series. One aim of the workshop was to develop stronger links between those wo- ing in the social sciences and those involved with multi-agent systems. We are pleased to note that many important conferences in various disciplines such as geography, economics, ecology, sociology, and physics have hosted workshops on MABS-related topics and that many respected journals publish papers that - clude elements of MABS. But although MABS is gradually acquiring legitimacy in many disciplinary elds, much remains to be done to clarify the potential use of MABS in these disciplines.
