Namely, those investi…gations have to be regarded as pure mathematics and evaluated as such. For example, some of my mathematical colleagues have worked in recent years on the Hartree-Fock approximate method for determining the structures of many-electron atoms and ions. When the method was intro duced, nearly fifty years ago, physicists did the best they could to justify it, using variational principles, intuition, and other techniques within the texture of physical reasoning. By now the method has long since become part of the established structure of physics. The mathematical theorems that can be proved now (mostly for two- and three-electron systems, hence of limited interest for physics), have to be regarded as mathematics. If they are good mathematics (and I believe they are), that is justification enough. If they are not, there is no basis for saying that the work is being done to help the physicists. In that sense, applied mathematics plays no role in today's physics. In today's division of labor, the task of the mathematician is to create mathematics, in whatever area, without being much concerned about how the mathematics is used; that should be decided in the future and by physics. 444 pp. Englisch.

The first invited paper summarizes basic properties of speech signals, reviews coding schemes, and describes a particular solution which guarantees high speech quality at low data rates. The second and third invited papers are concerned with acoustic-phonetic decoding. Techniques to integrate knowledge sources into speech recognition systems are presented and demonstrated by experimental systems. The fourth invited paper gives an overview of approaches for using prosodic knowledge in automatic speech recogni tion systems, and a method for assigning a stress score to every syllable in an utterance of German speech is reported in a contributed paper. A set of contributed papers treats the problem of automatic segmentation, and several authors successfully apply knowledge-based methods for interpreting speech signals and spectrograms. Voghera produced the first general program for the full first order predicate calculus to prove mathematical theorems; their computer proofs were obtained around 1957 and 1958, about the same time that H. Gelernter finished a computer program to prove simple high school geometry theorems. Since the field of computational logic (or automated theorem proving) is emerging from the ivory tower of academic research into real world applications, asserting also a definite place in many university curricula, we feel the time has corne to examine and evaluate its history. Contributions range from mathematics and theoretical computer science to biology. Aristid Lindenmayer introduced language-theoreti…c models for developmental biology in 1968. Since then the models have been cus tomarily referred to as L systems. Lindenmayer's invention turned out to be one of the most beautiful examples of interdisciplinary science: work in one area (developmental biology) induces most fruitful ideas in other areas (theory of formal languages and automata, and formal power series). As evident from the articles and references in this book, the in terest in L systems is continuously growing. For newcomers the first contact with L systems usually happens via the most basic class of L systems, namely, DOL systems. Here '0' stands for zero context between developing cells. It has been a major typographical problem that printers are unable to distinguish between 0 (zero) and 0 (oh). Thus, DOL was almost always printed with 'oh' rather than 'zero', and also pronounced that way. However, this misunderstanding turned out to be very fortunate. The wrong spelling 'DOL' of 'DOL' could be read in the suggestive way: DO L Indeed, hundreds of researchers have followed this suggestion. Some of them appear as contributors to this book. Of the many who could not contribute, we in particular regret the absence of A. Ehrenfeucht, G. Herman and H.A. It is an updated and corrected English edition of the author's book in Japanese published by Kinokuniya, Tokyo in 1985. Toric varieties are here treated as complex analytic spaces. Without assuming much prior knowledge of algebraic geometry, the author shows how elementary convex figures give rise to interesting complex analytic spaces. Easily visualized convex geometry is then used to describe algebraic geometry for these spaces, such as line bundles, projectivity, automorphism groups, birational transformations, differential forms and Mori's theory. Hence this book might serve as an accessible introduction to current algebraic geometry. Conversely, the algebraic geometry of toric varieties gives new insight into continued fractions as well as their higher-dimensional analogues, the isoperimetric problem and other questions on convex bodies.
