Neuware -The History of the Book In August 1992 the author had the opportunity to give a course on resolution theorem proving at the Summer School for Logic, Language, and Information in Essex. The challenge of this course (a total of five two-…hour lectures) con sisted in the selection of the topics to be presented. Clearly the first selection has already been made by calling the course 'resolution theorem proving' instead of 'automated deduction' . In the latter discipline a remarkable body of knowledge has been created during the last 35 years, which hardly can be presented exhaustively, deeply and uniformly at the same time. In this situ ation one has to make a choice between a survey and a detailed presentation with a more limited scope. The author decided for the second alternative, but does not suggest that the other is less valuable. Today resolution is only one among several calculi in computational logic and automated reasoning. How ever, this does not imply that resolution is no longer up to date or its potential exhausted. Indeed the loss of the 'monopoly' is compensated by new appli cations and new points of view. It was the purpose of the course mentioned above to present such new developments of resolution theory. The a…mount of material in the field of functional analysis (in cluding operator theory) has grown to such an extent that it has become impossible now to include all of it in one book. This holds even more for text books. Therefore, authors of textbooks usually restrict themselves to normed spaces (or even to Hilbert space exclusively) and linear operators in these spaces. In more advanced texts Banach algebras and (or) topological vector spaces are sometimes included. It is only rarely, however, that the notion of order (partial order) is explicitly mentioned (even in more advanced exposi tions), although order structures occur in a natural manner in many examples (spaces of real continuous functions or spaces of measurable function~). This situation is somewhat surprising since there exist important and illuminating results for partially ordered vector spaces, in . particular for the case that the space is lattice ordered. Lattice ordered vector spaces are called vector lattices or Riesz spaces. The first results go back to F. Riesz (1929 and 1936), L. Kan torovitch (1935) and H. Right from the beginning, it was obvious that strong connections of various kinds exist to questions studied in the consider…ably older field of combinatorial geometry. For example, the combinatorial structure of a geometric problem usually decides which algorithmic method solves the problem most efficiently. Furthermore, the analysis of an algorithm often requires a great deal of combinatorial knowledge. As it turns out, however, the connection between the two research areas commonly referred to as computa tional geometry and combinatorial geometry is not as lop-sided as it appears. Indeed, the interest in computational issues in geometry gives a new and con structive direction to the combinatorial study of geometry. It is the intention of this book to demonstrate that computational and com binatorial investigations in geometry are doomed to profit from each other. To reach this goal, I designed this book to consist of three parts, acorn binatorial part, a computational part, and one that presents applications of the results of the first two parts. The choice of the topics covered in this book was guided by my attempt to describe the most fundamental algorithms in computational geometry that have an interesting combinatorial structure. The unavoidable regularities ofsufficiently large words over a finite alpha bet are very important in the study of finiteness conditions for semigroups. This problem consists in considering conditions which are satisfied by a fi nite semigroup and are such as to assure that a semigroup satisfying them is finite. The most natural requirement is that the semigroup is finitely gener ated. Ifone supposes that the semigroup is also periodic the study offiniteness conditions for these semigroups (or groups) is called the Burnside problem for semigroups (or groups). There exists an important relationship with the theory of finite automata because, as is well known, a language L over a fi nite alphabet is regular (that is, recognizable by a finite automaton) if and only if its syntactic monoid S(L) is finite. Hence, in principle, any finite ness condition for semigroups can be translated into a regularity condition for languages. From the point of view of uniformizations of Riemann surfaces, Bers' observation has the consequence that the question of understanding the different uniformizations of a finite Riemann surface poses a purely topological problem; it is independent of the conformal structure on the surface. The last two chapters here give a topological description of the set of all (geometrically finite) uniformizations of finite Riemann surfaces. We carefully skirt Ahlfors' finiteness theorem. For groups which uniformize a finite Riemann surface; that is, groups with an invariant component, one can either start with the assumption that the group is finitely generated, and then use the finiteness theorem to conclude that the group represents only finitely many finite Riemann surfaces, or, as we do here, one can start with the assumption that, in the invariant component, the group represents a finite Riemann surface, and then, using essentially topological techniques, reach the same conclusion.
