The and determined to avoid war at British public, pacifist in sentiment almost any cost, sensed the danger implicit in the Civil War, yet realised its impotence to control events in Spain which indeed it little understood. The British Government, though under heavy attack from the Opposition and from a handful of its own supporters, succeeded in its endeavours to keep the country out of war on this occasion. The neutrality of Spain, even after Mussolini had entered World War II, was of inestimable value to Britain after the debacle in the summer of I940. It may be therefore that British policy during the Civil War paid off later on as well as achieving its purpose at the time. Dr. Kleine's book, lucidly written and carefully documented, ex amines the British attitude toward the Spanish Civil War. The author has the advantage of belonging to a generation which is able to analyse these events with historical detachment. Yet his understanding and easy style have made the period live. Neutrality was not easy for Britain. Its far-reaching interests in trading with Spain and in passage through Iberian waters again and again raised awkward problems. 176 pp. Englisch.

The rapid growth in population and the widening food deficits inmany tropical countries ofAsia, Africa, and Latin America call attention to those aspects o…f fertilization that have been neglected but are expected to yield large economic payoffs in the future. Fertilizer sulfur falls into this category. In the past fertilizer sulfur received little attention from researchers and policymakers since sulfur deficiency was not considered a serious problem. It was not a problem because of low crop yields, extensive cropping, and the incidental supply of sulfur through rain, irrigation water, manures, and sulfurcontaining fertilizers. However, the situation has changed in the last three decades. Moder nagriculture based on high crop yields, intensive cropping, improved crop varieties, and greater use of sulfur-free fertilizers and environmental regula tions restricting sulfur emissions are creating large gaps between sulfur sup ply and sulfur requirements. Sulfur deficiencies are widespread and grow ing. Consequently, the full potential of a modern agricultural system in tropical countries is not being realized. This research effort results from the recognition of the seriousness of the sulfur problem and its adverse impact on food production as well as IFDC's dedication to the development and transfer of economically ef ficient fertilizer technology to tropical countries. This study represents a comprehensive analysis ofthe technical and economic linkages between fer tilizer sulfur and food production, and it provides guidelines for future directions in fertilizer sulfur research and public policy. 272 pp. Englisch.

Wenn auch die Harze im chemischen Sinn den wohlcharakterisirten Fetten und Oelen keineswegs sehr nahestehen, oder ihnen allzu nahe verwandt sind, so müssen doch - im Vergleich zu den Fetten und Oele- diese grossen Schwankungen der analytischen Werthe deshalb besonders auffallen, weil die Untersuchungsmethoden der Fette und Oele fast ohne Ausnahme allgemein auf die Harzkörper übertragen worden sind. Wenn gleich die Harzkörper - als solche verstehe ich die eigentlichen Harze, die Balsame und die Gummiharze - als inkonstante, veränderliche, durch die rohe Art der Gewinnung und die verschiedenen Handelswege vielfach umgestaltete Gemische meist noch unbekannter, amorpher Körper auch von vornherein nicht erwarten lassen, dass die aus ihnen erhaltenen Werthe völlig stimmen, wenn man also diesen Gemischen a priori gewisse Schwankungen zubilligen muss, so ist doch die Frage nicht uninteressant, ja sogar in diesem Falle unumgängig nöthig, welche Thatsachen für die theilweise so schlechte U ebereinstimmung der W erthe verantwortlich gemacht werden müssen; weiterhin drängt sich die Frage auf: welches sind die Gesichtspunkte, welche eine Verbesserung der analytischen Methoden und mit diesen eine bessere Uebereinstimmung der analytischen W erthe - soweit solche bisher überhaupt bekannt ge geben wurden - für die Zukunft zu bewirken vermögen Für die relativ grossen Schwankungen, welche dem Leser dieser Analyse im speciellen Theil durch die Zusammenstellung der bisher 308 pp. Deutsch.

Zunachst ist die Erkennung dieser Korper in Gemischen, die Untersuchung der sogenannten technischen Appreturmittel, wie sie in den verschiedenartigsten Formen z. B. als feste Korper, Pulver, Pasten, weiter als Emul sionen, Losungen diinnfliissiger und schwerfliissiger Art, als Fette, Oele und dergleichen zum Appretieren der Gewebe in den Handel gebracht werden, in Betracht gezogen. Anschliessend an diese Ausfiihrungen, in welch en der aIl~ gemeine analytische Gang fiir solche Untersuchungen entwickelt ist, reiht sich die Anwendung dieser Priifungsmethoden bei der Bestimmung der Appretur der Gewebe. Die nach dem Ablosen der Appreturmittel von der Faser erhaItenen Losungen und etwaigen festen Korper, sind mit einigen Einschrankungen im wesentlichen nach denselben Gesichtspunkten zu unterssuchen, wie sie fUr die Bestimmung der einzelnen Substanzen in tech nischen Appreturgemischen dargelegt wurden. Da, wie eingangs bereits bemerkt wurde, die Technik fiir Appreturzwecke Korper benutzt, welche einerseits der anorgani schen, anderseits der organischen Reihe entnommen sind, so ist als Grundlage fUr aIle Untersuchungen zunachst festzusteIlen, Massot, Appretnranalyse. 1 - - ob Korper beider Art zugleich vorliegen und bei der Analyse Beriicksichtigung finden miissen, oder ob sich die Bestimmung im Rahmen der analytischen Priifungsmethoden der einen oder der anderen Korperklasse allein zu bewegen hat. 104 pp. Deutsch.
