I am afraid, however, that due to my mediocrity and immaturity I may have committed some inadvertent errors or dogmatic assertions. I am glad to say that after having shown this paper to my seniors I have obtained their approval on its publication. Just full three years have elapsed since I engaged myself in the conciliation of domestic matters. But that holy mysterious land of treasure lies still unconquered beyond many rivers and, mountains far in the distance. So we pilgrims must devote ourselves heart and soul to the steady progress of study. If this small work proves a mile stone towards our destination, I shall be happier than I expected. Sein Bau hatte vier Jahre gedauert, 1848-1852. Welch gewaltige Leistung dieser Bau bedeutete, kann erst jetzt, nach der Errichtung des neuen Seminetingtunnels, richtig beurteilt werden. Daß ein Bauwerk bei so schwierigen Gebirgsverhältnissen wie im Gebiet des Semmeringpasses nicht von unbegrenzter Dauer sein kann, ist jedem, der die Verhältnisse kennt, selbst verständlich. Daher verkleinert es in keiner Weise die Leistung der alten Tunnelbauer, wenn nunmehr darangegangen werden mußte, über die normalen Reparaturen hinaus, die Frage des Semmeringtunnels einer neuerlichen Lösung zuzuführen. Dazu wurden von den maßgeblichen Experten vier Möglichkeiten näher untersucht: 1. Durchgreifende Rekonstruktion des bestehenden zweigleisigen Tunnels; 2. Herstellung eines selbständigen neuen eingleisigen Tunnels in unmittelbarer Nähe des alten und Ausbau des alten Tunnels zu einem zweiten eingleisigen Tunnel; 3. Herstellung eines neuen eingleisigen Tunnels in unmittelbarer Nähe des alten mit Hilfe von Querschlägen vom bestehenden Tunnel aus, sonst wie unter 2. 4. Verlegung der Trasse der Semmeringbahn auf der Nord- und Südseite und Bau eines 10 bis 12 km langen Basistunnels. Daß das Projekt 4 sowohl vom verkehrstechnischen als auch bautechnischen als auch geologisch-technischen Standpunkt aus das günstigste wäre, darin waren alle Beteiligten einig. Seine Durchführung scheiterte jedoch von vornherein an den hohen Baukosten. Mit zusätzlicher Berücksichtigung der finanziellen Seite erwies sich Projekt 2 als das best geeignetste.
