With the death of the Stadtholder-King, however, the subject seems to have lost its attraction for the historian. Much has been written of the workings of the Anglo-Dutch alliance in the years that followed, but little has been done to relate the develop ment of 'official' attitudes and policies to the fluctuations and precon ceptions of public opinion . . Perhaps the very intimacy of the two countries for most of queen Anne's reign has made enquiries as to what 2 one thought of the other seem of little moment. Such a view would be plausible enough: conflict is certainly more spectacular and often more revealing than unity. 3 It is nonetheless obvious that the subjec tion of an alliance to the stresses of war may both reveal the underlying attitudes of the partners to each other and also invest their day-to-day reactions to each other's behaviour with a heightened significance. My rather naive assumption at that time was that if the truth is known about social phen…omena and presented to rational and educated persons, public opinion will bring about the desirable social change. That is, I assumed some automatic linkage between truth, rationality and social progress. Certainly some of the so-called 'pioneers' of sociology also assumed this automatic linkage. Thus, the opportunity to study in Europe, on the soil of some of these 'pioneers' heightened my interest and desire to learn more about the relationship between sociology and social progress. After living and studying several years in various parts of Western Europe - England, Germany, France, Holland - one finds that European sociology has remained very closely associ ated with social philosophy and history, has often been resisted by the universities, and is not as empirical as American sociology. The European sociologist, still quite conscious of the mistakes of the early fathers - Comte, Spencer, Marx, among others - is extremely cautious concerning problems of social progress and social action. He is aware that his science is still young and sus pect. He is also less sure than his predecessors about the exact role of sociology. 176 pp. Englisch.

In… this handbook, which is a sequal to my The Stone Age of Indo nesia, I have endeavoured to assemble a comprehensive picture of the Indonesian Bronze-Iron Age from the results of excavations, innumerable stray finds in museums, and various studies scattered among numerous scientific journals and periodicals (often difficult to obtain). The resulting picture can, of course, be a tentative one only, valid until many more scientific excavations have taken place. I have added a bibliography, as complete as it was possible to assemble. The completion of this summary of the Prehistory of Indonesia has been assisted by a grant-in-aid from the Wenner Gren Foundation 'The Viking Fund', New York. With the exception of the United States no important trading nation in the world of today maintains a freely convertible currency. On the contrary, each nation maintains a more or less comprehensive system of controls over the receipts and payments which can be effected in international markets. Recent efforts to reduce the extent and rigor of exchange regu lation, notably in Western Europe, have yielded modest results; it seems unlikely, however, that foreign exchange transactions will ever again be completely free of controL Foreign exchange control, with a greater or lesser degree of bilateralism, is a product born largely of necessity. Two world wars and a major world-wide depression so distorted the pattern of world trade and investment that free markets were simply unable to achieve their 'normal' automatic adjustment. Ex change control, on the other hand, has demonstrated its efficiency as a means of maintaining a semblance of order in disorganized international markets. Unfortunately, however, exchange con trol also has great possibilities for further distortion of the pat tern of world trade, for discrimination, and for economic ex ploitation - for economic effects generally considered undesirable. 252 pp. Englisch.

Doctrine is regarded as of secondary impor…tance to this study and is therefore treated summarily. Some attention is devoted to historical aspects of the problem to lend perspective to the developments of World War II. The basic plan of this work is simple. After definitions have been established for 'war' and 'treaties,' certain assumptions implicit in this study are discussed. Next, relevant doctrinal questions are considered. This is followed by an analysis of American practice concerning the legal effect of war on treaties of the United States from the early part of the 19th century down to World War II. The main part of the study, in which the treaties are arranged according to subject matter, carries the discussion down to the provisions in the peace treaties which relate to revival of prewar agreements. The chapter on the peace treaty provisions concludes with consideration of the special situation arising from the absence of a final peace treaty with Germany. Conclusions are then drawn from the experience of the United States. The literature of international law is filled with opinions on the effect of war on treaties, but only rarely have the authors stopped to analyze the practice of states methodically. 408 pp. Englisch.

Anthropology here is use…d in its widest sense: Physical anthropology, ethnology, cultural anthropology, archaeology and ethno history. l In view of the fact that Kennedy's bibliography has recently been brought up to date,2 a few words of explanation to justify this bibliography are necessary. This work attempts at completeness, that is to say, the items (especially found in missionary journals) which have been overlooked by those who did the splendid job of revising Ken nedy's bibliography, have been included here. Only those items which the present compiler was not able to get hold of have been left unannotated. In other words nearly every item listed here has been read or skimmed through. Moreover those pieces which have hardly any value or relevance to these cultures but which, none the less, are found listed in Kennedy (e. g. Buys under Nias) have been precluded from consideration here. Likewise those (few) articles dealing with modern developments which were uncovered have been listed here as well, contrary to the policy taken by the compilers of Kennedy's revised edition. Needless to say the debt one owes to these compilers for such a work as this - indeed for almost any research which one undertakes dealing with Indonesia - is untold. 100 pp. Englisch.

These have been dealt with in detail by WHITE and BRAUN (1942) and by BLACK (1949), and will not be considered further here. The most essential characteristic of being able to grow independently of any morphogenetic restraint, upon which all of the other diagnostic features must ultimately depend, is, however, equaHy capable of expression in neoplasia of a11 higher organisms since it is a characteristic of the ceH itself. One striking aspect of tumor genesis is the multiplicity of diverse agencies that are seemingly capable of accomplishing essentially the same end result. Radiant energy, irritation, carcinogenic ehemicals, parasitic organisms, and virus es have all been shown to serve as incitors of tumors in animals. The effectiveness of these various I'actors in cliciting tumor formation appears to be a I'unction of the hereditary constitution of the host. Wi…th the death of the Stadtholder-King, however, the subject seems to have lost its attraction for the historian. Much has been written of the workings of the Anglo-Dutch alliance in the years that followed, but little has been done to relate the develop ment of 'official' attitudes and policies to the fluctuations and precon ceptions of public opinion . . Perhaps the very intimacy of the two countries for most of queen Anne's reign has made enquiries as to what 2 one thought of the other seem of little moment. Such a view would be plausible enough: conflict is certainly more spectacular and often more revealing than unity. 3 It is nonetheless obvious that the subjec tion of an alliance to the stresses of war may both reveal the underlying attitudes of the partners to each other and also invest their day-to-day reactions to each other's behaviour with a heightened significance. Neuware -The purpose of this bibliography is to serve as a medium for informing those interested about the contents of books and articles which have thus far appeared dealing with the above-mentioned three cultures. Anthropology here is used in… its widest sense: Physical anthropology, ethnology, cultural anthropology, archaeology and ethno history. l In view of the fact that Kennedy's bibliography has recently been brought up to date,2 a few words of explanation to justify this bibliography are necessary. This work attempts at completeness, that is to say, the items (especially found in missionary journals) which have been overlooked by those who did the splendid job of revising Ken nedy's bibliography, have been included here. Only those items which the present compiler was not able to get hold of have been left unannotated. In other words nearly every item listed here has been read or skimmed through. Moreover those pieces which have hardly any value or relevance to these cultures but which, none the less, are found listed in Kennedy (e. g. Buys under Nias) have been precluded from consideration here. Likewise those (few) articles dealing with modern developments which were uncovered have been listed here as well, contrary to the policy taken by the compilers of Kennedy's revised edition. Neuware -The art of metal casting was imported into Indonesia, but its peoples mastered the secrets of metallurgy, and applied these, in ways often original and unique, to create their own distinctive civilisation of the Bronze-Iron Age. In thi…s handbook, which is a sequal to my The Stone Age of Indo nesia, I have endeavoured to assemble a comprehensive picture of the Indonesian Bronze-Iron Age from the results of excavations, innumerable stray finds in museums, and various studies scattered among numerous scientific journals and periodicals (often difficult to obtain). The resulting picture can, of course, be a tentative one only, valid until many more scientific excavations have taken place. I have added a bibliography, as complete as it was possible to assemble. The completion of this summary of the Prehistory of Indonesia has been assisted by a grant-in-aid from the Wenner Gren Foundation 'The Viking Fund', New York. I am grateful to Mr. Basoeki and Mr. Soebokastowo for the drawings of Figures 1, 11, 12, 13, 22 and 16, 23, 24, 25 respectively.
