Es wird deutlich werden, daB das meiste von dem, was die Chemie zur Umgestaltung unserer Welt beigetragen hat, nur durch die Untermauerung mit den Gesetzen der Physik moglich gewesen ist. Das Wesen der physikalischen Chemie ist namlich, die qualitativen Knderungen, die wir als chemische Reaktionen bezeichnen, quantitativ zu untersuchen und zu verstehen. Das setzt natiirlich bei dem schopferischen Forscher griindliche Kenntnisse der Chemie, aber auch der Physik und der Mathematik voraus, und alIes dies sind Hemmnisse flir eine ge meinverstandliche DarstelIung. Trotzdem solI der Versuch unternommen werden, mit einem Minimum von chemischen Stoffkenntnissen und chemischen Vor aussetzungen auszukommen und iiberdies nicht die mathematischen Entwicklungen darzustellen, die zu den Ergebnissen gefiihrt haben, sondern diese selbst, moglichst des Gewandes der Mathematik ent kleidet. It was he who in the beginning urged me to venture upon this course of study and whose encouragement helped me in moments of de spondency. The high standard which, with his keen and critical judgment, he set for his own work, was an example to me, and I shall strive to maintain it in my future studies. Not only did he help me to lay the foundation of my knowledge of archive science, but he was also my guide in a field new to me in many respects, that of Asian maritime trade. His wide knowledge of medieval European trade in the Baltic area led me to compare and contrast the two worlds of East and West and thus helped me to obtain a deeper insight into the differences and similarities between the various problems involved. I am greatly indebted to Prof. Dr. J. M. One pitfall into which writers on my sub jects…have occasionally fallen has been that of spending too much time in critically examining positions and arguments which no sane philosopher has ever offered. In order to guard against the danger of debating with 'straw men,' I have attempted to engage in critical conversations with several twentieth century writers on my theme. I have attempted to pay special at tention to a handful of writers who have written extremely important and influential discussions and who are representatives of a diversity of per spectives on the issues involved. In particular, I have taken note of the work of two determinists, Sir David Ross and Hastings Rashdall, a libertarian, C. A. Campbell, and a reprelentative of the more recent linguistic-analytic approach, P. Nowell-Smith. Many other important writers have been brought in at crucial points in the conversation. But this is not a history of the problem in the 20th century. Rather, it is a critical, systematic study of a problem or set of related problems. This work may be divided roughly into two parts, a metaphysical-psycho logical part comprising the first three chapters, and a metaethical-ethical part consisting of the last three chapters. 144 pp. Englisch.

The manuscripts were arranged according to their… contents rather than to their titles. An attempt was made to divide the allotted space between different contributors according to the apparent importance or originality of the contributions. Most of the papers submitted were written in either German or a rather inarticulate English, and subsequently, have been translated into English by the editors and their collaborators. The editors are indebted to Mr. R. Darling, student of medicine of the Faculte de Medicine de l'Universite de Lausanne, for reviewing the English translation. Editing was limited to requirements based on form rather than on content. In a few instances, manuscripts which were inadequate in form were accepted because their contents appeared interesting or important. A very few manuscripts were either not submitted or could not be included in the present proceedings, because they did not satisfy the editorial standards. Some papers are published in the present proceedings in abstract form because they have been submitted elsewhere for full publication. The editors' responsibility does not extend to the factual content of the manuscripts. The editors wish to apologize for the long delay in publishing these proceedings, a delay which may be attributed to difficulties in communication and cooperation with various authors. 424 pp. Englisch.
