Prior to the 1900s, this interest was somewhat episodic. Because of anxiety about infection, early attempts flourished only briefly and then were no more. In the twentieth century, however, as a result of renewed interest in intrauterine contraception, particularly in the developing countries, a number of individuals throughout the world began experiment ing with a variety of new intrauterine devices. Since then, a great number of these devices have been studied; a few have survived careful scrutiny, and IUDs now represent the second most commonly used form of medical contraception. It is estimated that approximately 15 million devices are in use at the present time, 3 to 4 million of them in the United States. 284 pp. Englisch.

Even with today's advanced knowledge of kidney organization this statement is still valid. With regard to the histotopographic relations of tubules and vessels as well as to the ultrastructure, the rabbit kidney is more simply organized than other mammalian kidneys, for example the mouse kidney and especially the Psammomys kidney. The rabbit kidney essentially displays the basic pattern of a mammalian kidney. Therefore, a thorough knowledge of the morphology of the rabbit kidney is indispensable for investigating kidneys of other species. Another reason for extensively investigating the rabbit kidney is that it is the only kidney with tubules that can easily be isolated and, therefore, be used for in vitro experiments (Burg et al. , 1966). Many investigations using these techniques have been performed in the last decade (for references see corresponding chapters). Accordingly the different segments of the nephron are functionally best characterized in the rabbit kidney. The purpose of the conference was to assess the current state-of the-art in geoscience information from both the regional and functional point of view. It was hoped that the conference could take steps to bring about increased international cooperation and collaboration in the field of geological information. The papers ranged over the whole spec trum of documentation from primary publishing back to the user, including data. Perhaps a keyword for the conference might be 'cooperation'. The idea of, and need for, cooperation was stressed in almost every talk. The final panel session was devoted to a discussion on the formation of a proposed International Association for Geological Information. Despite the growing pressure on information managers, stimulated by increasing international activities in geology, the global perspective of plate tectonics and worldwide concern for the availability of non-renewable resources, there does not exist an international organisation specifi cally concerned with geological information. Delegates agreed that there was no need for a new professional society of individuals but that a federation or similar organisation might be desirable. In the final session it became apparent that if the geological information community is to make the best use of all the systems and developments available there is very clearly a need to know what exists in all these areas at present.
