Cancer Treatment and Research is a series of authoritative volumes which aim to meet this need. It is an attempt to establish a critical mass of oncology literature covering virtually all oncology topics, revised frequently to keep the coverage up to date, easily available on a single library shelf or by a single personal subscription. We have approached the problem in the following fashion. First, by divid ing the oncology literature into specific subdivisions such as lung cancer, genitourinary cancer, pediatric oncology, etc. Second, by asking eminent authorities in each of these areas to edit a volume on the specific topic on an annual or biannual basis. Each topic and tumor type is covered in a volume appearing frequently and predictably, discussing current diagnosis, staging, markers, all forms of treatment modalities, basic biology, and more.

So erwarte ich natürlich auch v…on meinen Lesern, daß sie es so halten! Das vorliegende Buch bietet sogar eine Gelegenheit, die Methode zu verallgemei nern. Nachdem der Leser Kapitel14 überflogen hat, sollte er vorzugsweise die Kapitel 5, 2, 13 und 10 oder wenigstens einige davon (in dieser oder einer an deren Reihenfolge) lesen, bevor er sich an eine gründliche Lektüre macht. Das Entscheidende ist dabei, daß der Leser - an den geeigneten Stellen der ande ren Kapitel - Beweise vorfindet; und wie wir alle wissen, sind alle Beweise, die etwas taugen, notwendigerweise schwierig. Natürlich ist es gut, daß es Be weise gibt, aber ich glaube doch, daß man am ehesten das Interesse an ihrer Entwicklung nicht verliert, wenn man ihre Schlußfolgerungen vorläufig zu gibt, einfach um zu sehen, wohin sie führen, und sie dann genau zu studieren, wenn man überzeugt ist, daß das Ziel der Mühe wert ist. Dies ist der Grund dafür, daß ich vorschlage, Kapitel 4 und 11 beim ersten Durchlesen zu über schlagen - jedenfalls sollten das die 'Dichter' tun. Its main objective then was to extend help to those engaged in multiaentric therapeutic studies, especially with respect to the 'Federal Government's Program on Promoting Research… and Development in the Service of Health'. Experience with therapeutic studies in the Federal Republic of Germany showed that considerable problems as to methods and implementation of such studies exist. The manual was an attempt to present current metho dological knowledge and the experience obtained from completed studies in the light of the international literature. No radically new methodo logy was produced; however, the information representing the state-of the art, which is widely scattered up to now, has been compiled. For the American edition of this manual a few changes have been made. These concern especially the literature where references to German un published manuscripts were omitted. Goodwin (editors) Polymer colloids, more commonly known as latexes, are important in the manufacture of synthetic elastomers, commodity polymers, surface… coatings, adhesive and numerous specialty products. The significant growth of the commercial production of polymer latexes during the past decade has been due to a number of factors. First, water-based systems, especially paints and coatings, avoid many of the environ mental problems associated with the solvent-based systems. Second, polymer colloid products can be custom designed to meet a wide range of application requirements. Third, large scale emulsion polymeri zation proceeds smoothly and controllably with a wide range of monomers to produce stable polymer colloids of high molecular weight. Polymer colloids are also important in functional scientific studies. This importance arises from the spherical shape of the particles, range of attainable particle diameters and the uniformity of their size distribution, and the possibility of controlling and character izing the particle surface. Polymer colloids are useful as size standards in microscopy and in instrument calibration, and as carriers in antibody-enzyme diagnostic tests. As suspensions of uniform spherical particles, they are ideal experimental systems to test the series of colloidal phenomena as stability and coagulation, electric kinetic or rheological proper ties, and light scattering. In recent years, polymer colloids have received attention as models for many-body molecular phenomena, including the order-disorder transitions and the mechanics of crystalline phases. 272 pp. Englisch.

The main base of ICARDA's activities is at its principal research station near Aleppo in northern Syria. From here a wide range of research activities have been developed throughout the region served, in close collaboration with the national programs. This report concerns the activities of one such collaborative research project covering Egypt and the Sudan, the ICARDA/ IFAD Nile Valley Project on Faba Beans. It is by far the largest of ICARDA's collaborative projects and also the most successful. Faba Beans are an important food crop in many countries of the region and as such are a main focus of ICARDA's food legume program together with lentils and chickpeas.However, Aleppo does not provide a suita ble environment in which to conduct research of relevance to the irrigated agriculture of Egypt and northern Sudan: two countries in which faba beans are immensely important in the diets, particularly of the poorer sector in both countries. 164 pp. Englisch.

This approach provides a unified theoretical and computational framework for the most commonly used statistical methods: regression, analysi…s of variance and covariance, logistic regression, log-linear models for contingency tables and several more specialized techniques. More advanced expositions of the subject are given by McCullagh and NeIder (1983) and Andersen (1980). The emphasis is on the use of statistical models to investigate substantive questions rather than to produce mathematical descriptions of the data. Therefore parameter estimation and hypothesis testing are stressed. I have assumed that the reader is familiar with the most commonly used statistical concepts and methods and has some basic knowledge of calculus and matrix algebra. Short numerical examples are used to illustrate the main points. In writing this book I have been helped greatly by the comments and criticism of my students and colleagues, especially Anne Young. However, the choice of material, and the obscurities and errors are my responsibility and I apologize to the reader for any irritation caused by them.
