This requires that the attention be devoted to one set of objects at a time. However, the attention may be switched quickly between different objects or ongoing input processes. It is to be expected that such mechanisms are reflected in the neural dynamics: Neurons or neuronal assemblies which pertain to one object may fire, possibly in rapid bursts at a time. Such firing bursts may enhance the synaptic strength in the corresponding cell assembly and thereby form the substrate of short-term memory. However, we may well become aware of two different objects at a time. How can we avoid that the firing patterns which may relate to say a certain type of move ment (columns in V5) or to a color (V 4) of one object do not become mixed with those of another object Such a blend may only happen if the presentation times be come very short (below 20-30 ms). One possibility is that neurons pertaining to one cell assembly fire syn chronously. Then different cell assemblies firing at different rates may code different information.

To take account of these, much needs to be added to this history. Late 1989 saw the publicat…ion of the double volume set of studies, Effective Care in Pregnancy and Childbirth, in which all the then existing evidence on all the associated procedures was considered and evaluated by well-informed and impartial authors representing many countries. This informative collection has since been followed by a flow of single reports of new research findings about specific subjects within the field. To incorporate the new material has involved, in particular, a consider able enlargement and rearrangement of the text and reference lists for Chapters 3 and 4, which deal with antenatal and intranatal care. Then in 1990-1 the House of Commons Health Committee, under its chairman Nicholas Winterton, undertook a further enquiry into the maternity services in Britain. A wide range of people concerned as pro viders or users of the service, as well as researchers concerned to find out how well the service was meeting needs, chose to submit testi monies, written and oral. These testimonies were all later published in six volumes which offered a most valuable depiction of the maternity service from many points of view. 436 pp. Englisch.

It is based on lectures and senlinars I have been giving for students… at Mathematical Institute of Wroclaw University, and on a graduate course a.t Industrial Engineering Department of Texas A&M University, College Station, and addressed to a reader willing to use for example Lebesgue measure, conditional expectations with respect to sigma fields, martingales, or compensators as a common language in this field. In Chapter 1 a selection of one dimensional orderings is presented together with applications in the theory of queues, some parts of this selection are based on the recent literature (not older than five years). In Chapter 2 the material is centered around the strong stochastic ordering in many dimen sional spaces and functional spaces. Necessary facts about conditioning, Markov processes an'd point processes are introduced together with some classical results such as the product formula and Poissonian departure theorem for Jackson networks, or monotonicity results for some re newal processes, then results on stochastic ordering of networks, re~~ment policies and single server queues connected with Markov renewal processes are given. Chapter 3 is devoted to dependence and relations between dependence and ordering, exem plified by results on queueing networks and point processes among others. 212 pp. Englisch.

The Symposium is organized annually by the Institute of Theoretical Physics of the University of Wroclaw. Max Born was a stude…nt and later on an assistant at the University of Wroclaw (Wroclaw belonged to Germany at this time and was called Breslau). The topic of the Max Born Sympo sium varies each year reflecting the developement of theoretical physics. The subject of this Symposium 'Stochasticity and quantum chaos' may well be considered as a continuation of the research interest of Max Born. Recall that Born treats his 'Lectures on the mechanics of the atom' (published in 1925) as a nrst volume of a complete monograph (supposedly to be written by another person). His lectures concern the quantum mechanics of integrable systems. The quantum mechanics of non-integrable systems was the subject of the Third Max Born Symposium. It is known that classical non-integrable Hamiltonian systems show a chaotic behaviour. On the other hand quantum systems bounded in space are quasiperi odic. We believe that quantum systems have a reasonable classical limit. It is not clear how to reconcile the seemingly regular behaviour of quantum systems with the possible chaotic properties of their classical counterparts. The quantum proper ties of classically chaotic systems constitute the main subject of these Proceedings. Other topics discussed are: the quantum mechanics of dissipative systems, quantum measurement theory, the role of noise in classical and quantum systems. 236 pp. Englisch.
