At these scales, shock waves interact with local… material properties and microstructure to produce a hierarchy of dissipative structures such as inelastic deformation fields, randomly distributed lattice defects, and residual stresses. A macroscopically steady planar shock wave is neither plane nor steady at the mesoscale. The chapters in this book examine the assumptions underlying our understanding of shock phenomena and present new measurements, calculations, and theories that challenge these assumptions. They address such questions as: - What are the experimental data on mesoscale effects of shocks, and what are the implications - Can one formulate new mesoscale theories of shock dynamics - How would new mesoscale theories affect our understanding of shock-induced phase transitions or fracture - What new computational models will be needed for investigating mesoscale shocks.

Our understand ing of these complex signaling cascades has increased dramatically over the past few decades with the advent of molecular tools for…their dissection. Moreover, this infor mation is beginning to provide tangible targets towards manipulating cardiac func tion in the setting of cardiovascular disease. The mechanisms and factors that regulate cardiac cell growth are of particular interest as both adaptive and maladaptive responses can occur during cardiac hypertrophy. Cardiac hypertrophy describes the increase in individual cardiac myocyte size that is accomplished through the series and/or parallel addition of sarcomeres. The ability of cardiac muscle to increase in size through hyperplasia becomes highly restricted or negligible shortly after birth. Consequently, the increase in heart size associated with development and growth of an individual occurs through hypertrophy. In response to a chronic increase in workload, cardiac muscle cells can dramatically increase in size to face their increasing contractile demands. While this plasticity is clearly a ben eficial response under many conditions, it can be highly deleterious and inappropri ate under others. For example, cardiac hypertrophy associated with endurance exercise clearly enhances athletic performance. In contrast, the hypertrophy associated with chronic hypertension, stenotic or regurgitant heart valves, or following a myocardial infarction often continues far beyond the period where this adaptive response is ben eficial.

The main topics included all technical aspects of data security including: anonymity implementation, authentication, key distribution, block ciphers, - erating systems security, complexity-based cryptography, privacy, cryptanalysis, protocols, digital signatures, public key encryption, electronic money, public key infrastructure, hash functions, secret sharing, identi cation, surveys, and the state of the art. The program committee received 90 submissions in electronic format from 5 continents of which 24 were selected for presentation in 8 sessions. We had two invited talks, one by Eyal Kushilevitz from the Technion, Israel on Some ApplicationsofPolynomialsfortheDesignofCryptographicProtocols, andthe other by Ueli Maurer from ETH, Zurich, on Secure Multi-Party Computation Made Simple. Due to the high number of submissions, the reviewing phase was a very challenging process, and many good submissions had to be rejected. We are very grateful to all the program committee members, assisted by their colleagues, who devoted much e ort and valuable time to read and select the papers. 380 pp. Englisch.
